The photoinduced open‐circuit voltage (Voc) loss commonly observed in bulk heterojunction organic solar cells made from amorphous polymers is investigated. It is observed that the total charge carrier density and, importantly, the recombination dynamics are unchanged by photoinduced burn‐in. Charge extraction is used to monitor changes in the density of states (DOS) during degradation of the solar cells, and a broadening over time is observed. It is proposed that the Voc losses observed during burn‐in are caused by a redistribution of charge carriers in a broader DOS. The temperature and light intensity dependence of the Voc losses can be described with an analytical model that contains the amount of disorder broadening in a Gaussian DOS as the only fit parameter. Finally, the Voc loss in solar cells made from amorphous and crystalline polymers is compared and an increased stability observed in crystalline polymer solar cells is investigated. It is found that solar cells made from crystalline materials have a considerably higher charge carrier density than those with amorphous materials. The effects of a DOS broadening upon aging are suppressed in solar cells with crystalline materials due to their higher carrier density, making crystalline materials more stable against Voc losses during burn‐in.  相似文献

Plants of two varieties of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) and two varieties of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) were grown in controlled environments and subjected to water stress at various stages of growth. Leaf resistances and leaf water potentials were measured as stress developed. In soybeans the upper leaf surface had a higher resistance than the lower surface at all leaf water potentials and growth stages. Resistance of the upper surface began to increase at a higher water potential and increased more than the resistance of the lower surface. Resistances returned to prestress values 4 days after rewatering. In sunflowers upper and lower leaf surfaces had similar resistances at all water potentials and growth stages. Leaf resistances were higher in sunflower plants stressed before flowering than in those stressed later. Sunflower plants stressed to −16 bars recovered their prestress leaf resistance and water potential a few days after rewatering, but leaves of sunflower plants stressed to −23 bars died. Leaves of soybean and sunflower plants stressed before flowering suffered less injury than those of older plants and sunflowers stressed after flowering suffered more injury than soybeans.  相似文献

Parkinson's disease (PD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and multiple system atrophy are caused by alpha-synuclein aggregates. At present, there is no good biochemical method defining alpha-synuclein aggregates formed in vivo versus oligomers as a means to investigate alpha-synuclein aggregation and its mechanisms of neurodegeneration. A simple method, therefore, for the selective and sensitive detection of alpha-synuclein aggregates suited for screening purposes would be useful. Since in contrast to prions a proper detection of alpha-synuclein aggregates by Western blot analysis is difficult, we developed a protein aggregate filtration (PAF) assay. It takes advantage of the inherent insolubility of aggregated alpha-synuclein using microfiltration to separate it from soluble isoforms. For the first time, this assay even makes quantitative comparisons possible. We describe how the PAF assay can be applied to human brain tissue and animal and cell culture models, as well as used as a screening method for the subcellular location of alpha-synuclein aggregates. Since it detects the pathological isoform instead of surrogate markers, the PAF assay may have also potential in diagnosis of PD and DLB.  相似文献

Adult fitness components may strongly depend on variation in locomotory performance such as flight; this variation can be sex specific. Fast take-off to intercept females and competing males is an essential behavioral component of the territorial perching behavior in male speckled wood butterflies (Pararge aegeria L.). Females on the other hand avoid frequent take-offs particularly under suboptimal temperatures, typically showing fewer but longer flights than males. We estimated the heritability of take-off acceleration performance under suboptimal body temperatures by a restricted maximum-likelihood model. We calculated genetic correlations between this performance and a selection of morphological traits: size (body mass), flight muscle investment (relative thorax mass), and wing shape (forewing aspect ratio). Our results show significant additive genetic variation for mean acceleration performance and a similar but nonsignificant trend (P= 0.08) for maximal acceleration performance during take-off in males (h(2)= 0.15). In females, heritability was not significantly different from zero for either of the acceleration performance measures. Morphological traits and take-off performance were genetically linked in a sex-specific way. In males, relative thorax mass and forewing aspect ratio were positively genetically correlated with acceleration performance. In females, there was a negative genetic correlation between acceleration performance and abdomen mass, but not with residual abdomen mass (i.e., regressed on total body mass). To fully understand the evolution of sexual differences in flight performances and morphology, several other flight performances will have to be included. This multifunctional nature of flight and its consequences for the evolutionary study of flight has not yet been fully appreciated in the literature.  相似文献

Hemizygous deletion of chromosome 22q11 (del22q11) causes thymic, parathyroid, craniofacial and life-threatening cardiovascular birth defects in 1 in 4,000 infants. The del22q11 syndrome is likely caused by haploinsufficiency of TBX1, but its variable expressivity indicates the involvement of additional modifiers. Here, we report that absence of the Vegf164 isoform caused birth defects in mice, reminiscent of those found in del22q11 patients. The close correlation of birth and vascular defects indicated that vascular dysgenesis may pathogenetically contribute to the birth defects. Vegf interacted with Tbx1, as Tbx1 expression was reduced in Vegf164-deficient embryos and knocked-down vegf levels enhanced the pharyngeal arch artery defects induced by tbx1 knockdown in zebrafish. Moreover, initial evidence suggested that a VEGF promoter haplotype was associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular birth defects in del22q11 individuals. These genetic data in mouse, fish and human indicate that VEGF is a modifier of cardiovascular birth defects in the del22q11 syndrome.  相似文献

Therapeutic strategies for the treatment of acute retroviral infections have relied mainly on antiviral drugs. In this study we used the Friend virus model system to demonstrate that enhancement of the immune system can also have dramatic therapeutic effects. Since resistance to Friend virus-induced leukemia in mice is associated with T helper cell type 1 (Th1) immune responses, we enhanced these responses in susceptible mice by treatment with synthetic oligodeoxynucleotides containing unmethylated CpG motifs (CpG-ODN). Treatments begun at 4 days postinfection increased recovery from 6% in the control group to 74% in the CpG-treated group. CpG-mediated recovery was associated with a significant reduction of viral loads in the blood and spleens of treated mice compared to those of control animals. The treatment promoted Th1-type cytokine production by splenocytes of Friend virus-infected mice and augmented Friend virus-specific cytotoxic T-cell responses, but no influence on the virus-specific neutralizing antibody response was observed. Friend virus-specific CD8(+) T cells were critical for effective treatment with CpG-ODN, since in vivo depletion of these cells from treated mice prevented their recovery. Our results demonstrate that CpG-ODN therapy can significantly enhance virus-specific cellular immune responses and prevent retrovirus-induced disease. These findings may have implications for antiviral therapy in general.  相似文献

In order to assess age effects upon the daytime level of alertness, both subjective and objective measures of alertness were obtained in 19 healthy elderly males (mean age 65 years) and 19 healthy young males (mean age 21 years). Subjects were recorded during a Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), administered at 5 different times of day (9 a.m., 12 a.m., 3 p.m., 6 p.m., 9 p.m.). Before each test, subjects filled out an alertness questionnaire. During the entire 20 minutes of each test electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings were made and transformed into 40 averaged spectra, one for each 30 s epoch. For the delta, theta, alpha, sigma and beta bands of the EEG 6 consecutive values were averaged to obtain 1 value per 3 minutes. On the basis of the visually guided detection of the first spindle, sleep onset was determined. The elderly subjects obtained a higher overall level of subjective alertness than the young subjects. No age effect was observed for sleep latency, which followed a U-shaped diurnal trend. Overall, the mean relative EEG energy values followed a diurnal trend that was the reverse of that for sleep latency. The mean relative delta EEG energy gradually increased, and the mean relative alpha EEG energy gradually decreased across the MSLT. For the young subjects the respective ranges of variation of these EEG bands were very similar, while for the elderly subjects the range of variation of the alpha values was less than half of that for the delta band. Apparently, alpha EEG activity during the wake-sleep transition does not simply covary with delta EEG activity. Moreover, age appears to have a significant effect upon the dynamics of alpha EEG activity during the wake-sleep transition.  相似文献

Using bovine adrenocortical cells in monolayer culture it has been shown that treatment with adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) causes a dramatic increase in 17 alpha-hydroxylase activity. In postmitochondrial supernatant fractions (PMS) prepared from cells maintained in culture, there was a 15-fold increase in 17 alpha-hydroxylase activity 36 h following initiation of ACTH treatment compared with the activity measured in PMS prepared from control cells. In the continued presence of ACTH, 17 alpha-hydroxylase activity declined; however, even after 60 h of exposure to ACTH, 17 alpha-hydroxylase activity was eight times higher than that present in control cells. The dramatic increase in 17 alpha-hydroxylase activity provides an explanation for the previously observed phenomenon that following initiation of ACTH treatment of bovine adrenocortical cells in monolayer culture there is a shift in the pattern of corticosteroid secretion from approximately equal amounts of cortisol and corticosterone to almost exclusively cortisol. Thus, the modulation of 17 alpha-hydroxylase activity by ACTH action appears to serve a key regulatory role in the pattern of corticosteroid production. Soluble cytosolic factors apparently do not participate in the regulation of 17 alpha-hydroxylase activity in the bovine adrenal cortex. Increases in the magnitude of substrate-induced absorbance changes are indicative that the increase in 17 alpha-hydroxylase activity is due, at least in part, to an elevation of cytochrome P-450(17)alpha synthesis.  相似文献
