A test of the hypothesis of pheromone attraction in salmonid migration

Synopsis We tested the hypothesis that anadromous salmonids are guided on their homeward migration by population-specific pheromones. Our findings do not support the hypothesis. Wild migrant Arctic charr,Salvelinus alpinus, from Ikarut River, Labrador were transferred and held in a tributary previously uninhabited by anadromous fish. None of the charr migrating up Ikarut River entered the tributary after fish were transferred. Similarly, migrant charr, which were caught in Ikarut River and released in the tributary below the captive fish, did not remain in the tributary. We re-evaluated the data which have been used to uphold the concept of pheromone attraction in salmonid migration and concluded that support for the hypothesis is unsubstantiated.     

Cloned nodulation genes of Rhizobium leguminosarum determine host-range specificity

Summary Three nodulation-deficient (nod) mutants of Rhizobium leguminosarum were isolated following insertion of the transposon Tn5 into pRL1JI, the R. leguminosarum plasmid known to carry the nodulation genes. DNA adjacent to the nod: Tn5 alleles was subcloned and used to probe a cosmid clone bank containing DNA from a Rhizobium strain carrying pRL1JI. Two cosmid clones which showed homology with the probe contained about 10 kb of DNA in common. The R. leguminosarum host-range determinants were found to be present within this 10 kb common region since either of the cosmid clones could enable a cured R. phaseoli strain to nodulate peas instead of Phaseolus beans, its normal host. Electron microscopy of nodules induced by Rhizobium strains cured of their normal symbiotic plasmid but containing either of the two cosmid clones showed bacteroid-forms surrounded by a peri-bacteroid membrane, indicating that normal infection had occurred. Thus it is clear that this 10 kb region of nodDNA carries the genes that determine host range and that relatively few bacterial genes may be involved in nodule and bacteroid development.     

Effects of Legal Abortion on Gynaecology

The effect of the Abortion Act on gynaecological work in one provincial teaching hospital is that despite an increase in patient turnover of 45% the waiting list has increased by 200%. It is suggested that the Act has had little effect on the birth rate or illegitimacy and that there may have been an increase in criminal abortion.     

A mass-spectrometric sequence study of the enzyme ribitol dehydrogenase from Klebsiella aerogenes

The first detailed results of the application of a low-resolution mixture analysis approach to the sequence analysis of an enzyme, ribitol dehydrogenase, are given. Examples of the interpretation of the spectra of peptide mixtures derived from this protein are described. Evidence for new fragmentation patterns observed is reported, together with an explanation of the generation of ambiguous sequences by use of a low-specificity enzyme, thermolysin. The overall sequencing strategy evolved is assessed.     

The chromosomes and linkage groups ofPisum

By appropriate genetical studies using reciprocal translocation stocks it has been possible to confirmLamprecht's evidence that inPisum there are seven linkage groups. Lamm's evidence for six linkage groups has been shown to be due to incomplete knowledge of the chromosomal structure of certain interchange lines.It is suggested thatLamprecht's system of chromosomal nomenclature should be universally adopted forPisum.Lamm &Miravelle's extended tester set has been accordingly renumbered and the intercrossing of the interchange lines completed in order to extend the confirmatory evidence as to their chromosomal constitution.
