The genus Providencia consists of eight species of opportunistic pathogenic enterobacteria that can cause enteric diseases and urinary tract infections. The existing combined serological classification scheme of three species, P. alcalifaciens, P. stuartii, and P. rustigianii, is based on the specificity of O-antigens (O-polysaccharides) and comprises 63 O-serogroups. Differences between serogroups are related to polymorphism at a specific genome locus, the O-antigen gene cluster, responsible for O-antigen biosynthesis. This review presents data on structures of 36 O-antigens of Providencia, many of which contain unusual monosaccharides and non-carbohydrate components. The structural data correlate with the immunospecificity of the O-antigens and enable substantiation on a molecular level of serological relationships within the genus Providencia and between strains of Providencia and bacteria of the genera Proteus, Escherichia, and Salmonella. Peculiar features of the O-antigen gene cluster organization in 10 Providencia serogroups and biosynthetic pathways of nucleotide precursors of specific monosaccharide components of the O-antigens also are discussed.  相似文献

A phosphorylated O-specific polysaccharide (O-antigen) was obtained by mild acid degradation of Proteus vulgaris O12 lipopolysaccharide and studied by sugar and methylation analyses, 1H-, 13C- and 31P-NMR spectroscopy, including two-dimensional COSY, TOCSY, NOESY, H-detected 1H, 13C and 1H, 31P heteronuclear multiple-quantum coherence experiments. It was found that the polysaccharide consists of pentasaccharide repeating units connected via a glycerol phosphate group, and has the following structure: where FucNAc is 2-acetamido-2,6-dideoxygalactose and the degree of O-acetylation at position 4 of GalNAc is approximately 25%. Immunochemical studies with P. vulgaris O12 O-antiserum suggested that the lipopolysaccharide studied shares common epitopes with the lipopolysaccharide core of P. vulgaris O8 and with the O-antigens of P. penneri strains 8 and 63.  相似文献

1. Natural selection favours females who can correctly assess the predation risk and hence avoid high‐risk oviposition sites and reduce the mortality rate of their offspring. In spite of the potential significance of such behaviour, relatively few studies have assessed the relationship between oviposition behaviour and predation risk. 2. The present study aimed to determine the sublethal effects of predators on oviposition site selection by gravid females, the foraging activity of larvae, and the life history traits of two mosquito species that breed in different habitats, Aedes albopictus Skuse (container breeder) and Culex tritaeniorhynchus Giles (wetland breeder). 3. Female C. tritaeniorhynchus avoided laying eggs at oviposition sites in the presence of a predator cue. In contrast, female A. albopictus laid eggs in both the absence and presence of the predator cue. 4. To examine the effects of predator cues on larval behaviour, experiments were conducted in the absence and presence of a predator cue. Although larval activity was lower in the presence of the predator cue than that in its absence in both species, C. tritaeniorhynchus responded to the predator cue more strongly than A. albopictus. Female A. albopictus that had been reared with caged predators exhibited an extended larval development period, whereas the adult C. tritaeniorhynchus reared in the presence of predators were smaller than those reared in their absence. 5. This finding might explain why C. tritaeniorhynchus avoid laying eggs in predator‐conditioned water, for example to increase the fitness of their offspring, but A. albopictus either cannot detect predator cues or are not sensitive to them.  相似文献

The lipopolysaccharides from two serologically related strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa II (Sandvik classification) and V (IM-1, Verder-Evans classification) were isolated by the Westphal method and cleaved with 1% acetic acid. The O-specific polysaccharide from Sandvik II lipopolysaccharide involved L-rhamnose, N-acetyl-D-quinovosamine, and N-acetyl-D-galactosaminuronic acid in the ratio 2:1:1, as well as O-acetyl groups. The Verder-Evans V O-specific polysaccharide was found to contain just the same sugars and, in addition, D-glucose, the monosaccharide ratio being 2:1:1:1. On the basis of methylation analysis, Smith degradation, solvolysis with anhydrous hydrogen fluoride and 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance data, it was concluded that the polysaccharides have identical main chains, and there were established the following structures of their repeating units: -4)-alpha-D-GalNAcA-(1-3)-beta-D-QuiNAc-(1-2)-alpha-L-Rha-(1 -3)-alpha-L-Rha-(1- increases 3 60% OAc Sandvik II -4)-alpha-D-GalNAcA-(1-3)-beta-D-QuiNAc-(1-2)-alpha-L-Rha-(1 -3)-alpha-L-Rha-(1- increases 3 alpha-D-Glc Verder-Evans V The data obtained allow us to substantiate the combining of the strains studied into one O-serogroup as two individual O-serotypes.  相似文献

The structures of O-specific polysaccharides obtained by mild acid degradation of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) from seven Pseudomonas aeruginosa Fisher's immunotypes have been studied. The polysaccharides consist mainly of monoamino and diamino sugars, frequently also carrying acidic functions. Some of the sugars were detected in nature for the first time in these organisms. The structures of the O-specific polysaccharides of the immunotypes 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are identical to those of the polysaccharides of the 011; 0(2a)2c; 01; 010a, 10b and 07a, 7d Lányi-Bergan serological subgroups respectively, whereas no analogues have been found for the immunotypes 1 and 7. Some cross-reactions between the LPS of different immunotypes were observed in passive haemagglutination tests; the results of inhibition of passive haemagglutination and agar gel immunoprecipitation point, however, to a specificity of the LPS. Many of the LPS of the seven Pseudomonas aeruginosa immunotypes manifest rather a high cross-protective activity in active immunization tests in mice. The nature of the cross-protective activity of the LPS is discussed.  相似文献

The Peruvian Andes presents a climate suitable for many species of sandfly that are known vectors of leishmaniasis or bartonellosis, including Lutzomyia peruensis (Diptera: Psychodidae), among others. In the present study, occurrences data for Lu. peruensis were compiled from several items in the scientific literature from Peru published between 1927 and 2015. Based on these data, ecological niche models were constructed to predict spatial distributions using three algorithms [Support vector machine (SVM), the Genetic Algorithm for Rule‐set Prediction (GARP) and Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt)]. In addition, the environmental requirements of Lu. peruensis and three niche characteristics were modelled in the context of future climate change scenarios: (a) potential changes in niche breadth; (b) shifts in the direction and magnitude of niche centroids, and (c) shifts in elevation range. The model identified areas that included environments suitable for Lu. peruensis in most regions of Peru (45.77%) and an average altitude of 3289 m a.s.l. Under climate change scenarios, a decrease in the distribution areas of Lu. peruensis was observed for all representative concentration pathways. However, the centroid of the species' ecological niche showed a northwest direction in all climate change scenarios. The information generated in this study may help health authorities responsible for the supervision of strategies to control leishmaniasis to coordinate, plan and implement appropriate strategies for each area of risk, taking into account the geographic distribution and potential dispersal of Lu. peruensis.  相似文献
