1. Development in organisms can vary in response to fluctuating environments. In holometabolous insects, variation in adult phenotypic traits is strongly influenced by growth conditions experienced by larvae. The main aim of this study was to assess how much environmental insight can be gained from analysis of the phenotypic changes in an insect's life history parameters in response to realistic food limitations. 2. This investigation was motivated by a need for more information about the developmental requirements of the endangered pine hoverfly Blera fallax (Linnaeus) (Diptera, Syrphidae) in Scotland. Blera fallax depends on a scarce and often ephemeral habitat, rot holes of Scots pine Pinus sylvestris L. stumps. We studied how rearing conditions affected growth in captive larvae, and compared these responses with a wild population. 3. The growth curve observed in the field was similar to that in resource‐limited, lab conditions, suggesting that resources are limiting in nature. The effects of resource availability on development time and body size depended on sex. Adult females were larger but had more variable size at maturity compared with males. In contrast, males typically were not smaller in resource‐limited conditions, but rather continued to develop for another year. Between 2% and 20% of larvae extended development over 2 years regardless of growth conditions, perhaps indicating a semivoltine strategy to circumvent extinction during years with a low breeding success. 4. These results identify life history traits that may be important for other saproxylic Diptera in rot holes, and organisms that experience food restrictions during growth. 相似文献

Abstract. 1. A lagged, density-dependent relationship between survival of early instars and host-tree condition is revealed during outbreaks of spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana Clem. Persistent damage to hosts leads to deterioration of the stand.
2. Resource limitation affects survival during early-instar dispersal of spruce budworm. Impediments to distinguishing these events with estimates of survival were overcome with a simple model that describes the dispersal and survival processes. The model was used to analyse a recent 15-year population series from Black Sturgeon Lake and two historical datasets from Green River, in Canada.
3. Defoliation-induced damage to the trees resulted in increased losses of spring-emerging larvae that are dispersing in search of feeding sites. Losses were further exacerbated by biotic factors such as maternal fecundity, rates of infection by the pathogen, Nosema fumiferanae , and by weather-related effects on the foraging period.
4. Survival of early-stage budworm larvae in persistent outbreaks declined and the likelihood of other density-related factors such as rate of mortality from natural enemies increased. These results may reconcile outstanding differences in interpretation of the role of the forest resource in spruce budworm population dynamics and point to a common process linking the dynamics of other well-known budworm species. 相似文献

Bronchial hyperreactivity (BHR) is associated with the presence of airway inflammation in asthma and is seen in individuals occupationally exposed to grain dust. To better understand the relationship between BHR and pulmonary inflammation after grain dust exposure, we carried out an inhalation challenge to corn dust extract (CDE) on seven subjects with BHR [a 20% or greater decrease in forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV(1)) compared with diluent FEV(1) with a cumulative dose of histamine =47.3 breath units] and compared their physiological and inflammatory responses with those of seven matched control subjects. BHR subjects were exposed to nebulized CDE (target dose of 0.16 microg/kg endotoxin) as tolerated; matched controls received equal amounts of CDE. Subjects with BHR complained of chest tightness and dyspnea within the 2 h after inhalation of CDE significantly more frequently than controls. Similarly, subjects with BHR developed significantly greater percent declines in FEV(1) at time points up to 4 h after exposure to CDE. Significant increases in total cells, neutrophils, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-6, and interleukin-8 were detected in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid 4 h after inhalation of CDE in all subjects, but no differences were detected between the control and BHR groups. These results suggest that, although subjects with BHR develop a more precipitous decline in FEV(1) after exposure to CDE, the inflammatory response to CDE is similar in subjects with and without BHR. 相似文献

We investigated the electrical properties of the egg of the nemertean worm Cerebratulus, and found evidence that an electrically-mediated polyspermy block operates for a period of about 1 hr after fertilization. At fertilization, in natural or artificial sea water, the membrane potential shifts from its resting level of about -66 mV to a peak of about +43 mV, and in most cases remains greater than 0 mV for more than 1 hr. The average potential during the first 30 min is +22 +/- 8 mV (SD, n = 12). When the external Na+ concentration is reduced from 486 to 51 mM (choline substituted) the fertilization potential amplitude is reduced; the average potential during the first 30 min is -27 +/- 21 mV (SD, n = 5). Eggs inseminated in 51 mM Na+ sea water become polyspermic, indicating that polyspermy prevention depends on an electrically-mediated mechanism. The electrical block is required for about 60 min, since transfer to 51 mM Na+ sea water during this period results in polyspermy. During the first hour following fertilization, the egg is also developing a permanent, nonelectrical block; the degree of polyspermy which results upon transfer to low Na+ sea water decreases progressively with time. The permanent block appears to be at the level of the egg plasma membrane or glycocalyx, since the egg envelope is not a barrier to sperm penetration, nor does its removal induce polyspermy. Complete sequence-specific 1H nuclear magnetic resonance assignments were obtained for the backbone hydrogen atoms in Tendamistat, a protein with 74 residues. From NOESY observation of 1H-1H short distance constraints, measurements of the spin-spin couplings 3JHN alpha and a qualitative identification of slowly exchanging amide protons, two antiparallel beta-sheets containing three and four strands, respectively, were identified. The peptide segments outside the beta-sheets do not form regular secondary structure. Preliminary data were obtained on the relative spatial arrangements of the two beta-sheets. 相似文献

The evolutionary origin of the pinnipeds (seals, sea lions, and walruses)
is still uncertain. Most authors support a hypothesis of a monophyletic
origin of the pinnipeds from a caniform carnivore. A minority view suggests
a diphyletic origin with true seals being related to the mustelids (otters
and ferrets). The phylogenetic relationships of the walrus to other
pinniped and carnivore families are also still particularly problematic.
Here we examined the relative support for mono- and diphyletic hypotheses
using DNA sequence data from the mitochondrial small subunit (12S) rRNA and
cytochrome b genes. We first analyzed a small group of taxa representing
the three pinniped families (Phocidae, Otariidae, and Odobenidae) and
caniform carnivore families thought to be related to them. We inferred
phylogenetic reconstructions from DNA sequence data using standard
parsimony and neighbor-joining algorithms for phylogenetic inference as
well as a new method called spectral analysis (Hendy and Penny) in which
phylogenetic information is displayed independently of any selected tree.
We identified and compensated for potential sources of error known to lead
to selection of incorrect phylogenetic trees. These include sampling error,
unequal evolutionary rates on lineages, unequal nucleotide composition
among lineages, unequal rates of change at different sites, and
inappropriate tree selection criteria. To correct for these errors, we
performed additional transformations of the observed substitution patterns
in the sequence data, applied more stringent structural constraints to the
analyses, and included several additional taxa to help resolve long,
unbranched lineages in the tree. We find that there is strong support for a
monophyletic origin of the pinnipeds from within the caniform carnivores,
close to the bear/raccoon/panda radiation. Evidence for a diphyletic origin
was very weak and can be partially attributed to unequal nucleotide
compositions among the taxa analyzed. Subsequently, there is slightly more
evidence for grouping the walrus with the eared seals versus the true
seals. A more conservative interpretation, however, is that the walrus is
an early, but not the first, independent divergence from the common
pinniped ancestor.

Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) has been reported to relax, in a concentration-dependent manner, cholecystokinin-induced tension in guinea pig gallbladder strips. It is now shown that this CGRP-induced relaxation is body weight dependent with the degree of relaxation inversely related to weight. Radioimmunoassay demonstrated that the amount of CGRP in the gallbladder increased with body weight. Receptor binding showed that the number of binding sites and the affinity of the receptor decreased with increasing body weight. CGRP may play a role in the normal pattern of gallbladder contraction and relaxation. Decreased motility, even between periods of complete emptying, has been demonstrated to have a role in gallbladder diseases. The decreased sensitivity of the gallbladder to CGRP may explain the increase in abnormalities with age. 相似文献

Dental plaque is a natural biofilm which has been a focus of attention for many years because of its known roles in caries and periodontal diseases. Acid production by plaque bacteria leads to the erosion of tooth mineral in caries, and the cariogenicity of plaque is related to population levels of acid-tolerant organisms such as mutants streptococci. However, the biofilm character of plaque allows for survival of a diverse flora, including less acid-tolerant organisms, some of which can produce ammonia from arginine or urea to counter acidification. Plaque is often considered to be relatively anaerobic. However, evidence is presented here that both supragingival and subgingival plaque have active oxygen metabolism and that plaque bacteria, including anaerobes, have developed defenses against oxidative stress. Even in subgingival plaque associated with periodontitis, measured residual oxygen levels are sufficient to allow for oxygen metabolism by organisms considered to be extremely anaerobic such asTreponema denticola, which metabolizes oxygen by means of NADH oxidases and produces the protective enzymes superoxide dismutase and NADH peroxidase. The finding that plaque bacteria produce a variety of protective enzymes is a good indicator that oxidative stress is a part of their everyday life. The biofilm character of plaque allows for population diversity and coexistence of aerobes, anaerobes and microaerophiles. Overall, agents that affect oxidative metabolism offer possibilities for reducing the pathogenic activities of plaque. 相似文献

Monthly surveys of Bewick's Swans Cygnus columbianus bewickii , Whooper Swans Cygnus cygnus and Mute Swans Cygnus olor in Britain and Ireland were made during the 1990–1991 winter to determine factors affecting the swans' selection of feeding sites. Geographic location and habitat both influenced site selection. Whooper Swans occurred in greatest numbers at sites in Scotland, northeastern England and Northern Ireland, whereas Bewick's Swans had a more southerly distribution, reflecting differences in the migratory routes used by these two species. The resident Mute Swans were more widespread, with large flocks occurring in southeastern England and in parts of Scotland. Whooper and Mute Swans were found mainly on permanent inland waters (68% and 61%, respectively), but the majority of Bewick's Swans (60%) were on arable land. The percentage of Bewick's Swan flocks found on permanent inland waters (42%) was higher than that found on arable fields (23%), indicating that the large number recorded on arable land was a result of the birds congregating at a comparatively small number of sites. Overall, less than 15% of Whooper Swans and 3% of Mute Swans were on arable crops during the winter, but the largest flocks were associated with arable land for all three species. Thus, although the occurrence of large flocks at particular arable sites may give an impression that swans feed mainly on farmland, the swans are in fact more widely dispersed. Regional variation in the percentage of juveniles present was recorded for all three species. Changes during the winter in the distribution of juveniles, and of the swans as a whole, are considered in relation to food supply and to migratory routes for the Bewick's and Whooper Swans. 相似文献
