Seasonal dynamic of phototrophic epibionts on crustacean zooplankton in a eutrophic reservoir with cyanobacterial bloom

Seasonality of burden and prevalence of phototrophic (microalgal) epibionts Characidiopsis ellipsoidea, Colacium vesiculosum and Colacium sp. on dominating crustacean zooplankton (Daphnia longispina, Cyclops vicinus and Mesocyclops leuckarti) were studied in a small reservoir Bugach with cyanobacterial bloom. The correlations between the seasonal dynamics of prevalence and the dynamics of others biotic and abiotic factors were calculated. The conclusions were as follows. The substrate species, that determined the development of the epibionts on the three studied crustacean zooplankton, was Daphnia longispina (Cladocera). Despite intensive epibiotic infestation of crustacean zooplankton, epibionts did not appear to have caused non-consumptive mortality of the crustacean zooplankton. But they could have contributed to the Daphnia summer decline by increasing mortality due to its consumption by planktivorous fishes. The phototropic epibionts may successfully coexist with cyanobacterial bloom. The possible role of the epibionts in changing nutrient fluxes in pelagic food web is discussed.     

Does malonate take part in the synthesis of sterols?

The effect of acetyl-CoA-carboxylase activators, citrate and biotin, on cholesterol biosynthesis from acetate and malonate in rat liver and in cultured human lung fibroblasts was studied. Administration of citrate and biotin to animals and an addition of biotin to the fibroblast culture medium led to a significant stimulation of [2-14C]acetate incorporation into sterols but had no effect on the incorporation of [2-14C]malonate. The data obtained suggest that malonate is incorporated into sterols without preliminary decarboxylation.     

Demonstration of the activity of a rhesus-positive antigen in the erythrocytes of rhesus-negative donors and an increase in the expression of ABO system antigens after ultraviolet irradiation of the blood

UV irradiation (254 nm) in doses increasing erythrocyte (Er) hemolysis by 5 to 32% was found to stimulate the agglutination activity of ABO and Rhesus (Rh) system antigens. The stimulation effect was the higher the lower the antigen activity before irradiation. In the Rh-negative (Rh-)-Er, irradiation induced the Rh0(D)-like antigen specific activity suggesting that this antigen may be present in the Rh--Er membrane. Expression of Rh0(D)-antigen in Rh--Er, stimulation of its activity in Rh-positive cells, and activation of ABO system antigens may result from photo-chemical destruction of the outer membranous layer of the ER.     

Isoelectric focusing of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA-reductase from the postmicrosomal fraction of rat liver

Using isoelectrofocusing, the existence of multiple forms of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase (EC 1.1.1.34) in the postmitochondrial fraction of rat liver has been demonstrated for the first time. The isoelectric points for the enzyme isoforms are 6.25, 7.5 and 8.25.

Using the operonic gene pairs for establishing the treshold for correlation coefficient of differently expressed genes

We developed an approach for effective estimating the correlations in the noise component of gene expression data. An efficent noise reduction technique has been suggested. The resulting technique has been applied to E. coli microarray data and tested on SOS response modulated genes.

Specific features of the feeding of larval fish of the families Blenniidae and Gobiidae in relation to changes in the coastal plankton community of the Black Sea

Data on the feeding of larvae of mass Black Sea fish species of the families Blenniidae and Gobiidae with a length of 2.2–7.0 mm from coastal waters of the Crimea (Sevastopol) are presented. Despite the tendency for an improvement in the feeding of larval fish, Mnemiopsis leidyi, in the case of a prolonged staying in the plankton in mass amounts in the absence of Beroe ovata, exerts a negative effect on the food resources and the survival of larvae. This is evidenced by the indices of food consumption and the proportion of larvae with empty intestines.
