Termite soldiers engage in colony defense and they possess weapons in order to attack enemies. Defensive strategies vary among species depending on the morphology of the soldier's weapons. Both the frontal gland and elongated mandibles are formed during soldier differentiation of Reticulitermes speratus workers, which is associated with an increase in juvenile hormone (JH) titer. It was shown that the amount of JH applied and coexistence with soldiers affected mandibular elongation of the induced presoldiers. To determine the relationship between applied JH concentration and frontal‐gland development of R. speratus, mandibular modification and frontal‐gland formation of presoldiers induced by 20, 40 and 80 µg JH III in the presence or absence of soldiers were observed. Both presoldier differentiation rates and their mandibular lengths were affected by the presence of soldiers in treatments with 20 and 40 µg JH III. Especially in the treatment with 20 µg JH III, frontal‐pore malformation was observed in some presoldiers. All presoldiers with a malformed frontal pore had almost the same sized mandibles, compared with those of stationarily molted workers. Interestingly, sections of these presoldiers showed that frontal‐gland invagination occurred incompletely in comparison with presoldiers with relatively elongated mandibles. Consequently, frontal‐gland formation might be affected by JH titer (applied and endogenous JH), and individuals with a malformed frontal pore were probably differentiated by JH titers only slightly above the threshold for presoldier differentiation. 相似文献

In phylogenetically ancestral taxa of termites (the so-called lower termites), at least one soldier emerges and is maintained longitudinally in each incipient colony. However, in apical taxa (the so-called higher termites), the developmental pathway and regulation of soldiers in incipient colonies currently remain unknown. We therefore examined soldier and worker development in incipient colonies of higher termites (Nasutitermes takasagoensis Shiraki). Developmental stages and castes were successfully discriminated by head width in incipient colonies 4 months after colony foundation. Furthermore, differences were observed in the number of bristles on antennae between first- and second-instar larvae. In N. takasagoensis, there was more than one soldier in each incipient colony 4 months after its foundation. Presoldiers in the incipient colonies were differentiated from an earlier instar (male second-instar larvae), whereas, in mature colonies, they were differentiated from male third instars (= minor workers). The developmental period of the former (7 days) was markedly shorter than that of the latter (14 days). All female second-instar larvae molted into workers. Membrane fusion between the viral envelope and plasma membranes of target cells has previously been correlated with HIV-1 infection. Lipids in the plasma membrane, including sphingomyelin, may be crucially involved in HIV-1 infection; however, the role of lipid-metabolic enzymes in membrane fusion remains unclear. In this study, we examined the roles of sphingomyelin synthase (SMS) in HIV-1 Env-mediated membrane fusion using a cell-cell fusion assay with HIV-1 mimetics and their target cells. We employed reconstituted cells as target cells that stably express Sms1 or Sms2 in Sms-deficient cells. Fusion susceptibility was ∼5-fold higher in Sms2-expressing cells (not in Sms1-expressing cells) than in Sms-deficient cells. The enhancement of fusion susceptibility observed in Sms2-expressing cells was reversed and reduced by Sms2 knockdown. We also found that catalytically nonactive Sms2 promoted membrane fusion susceptibility. Moreover, SMS2 co-localized and was constitutively associated with the HIV receptor·co-receptor complex in the plasma membrane. In addition, HIV-1 Env treatment resulted in a transient increase in nonreceptor tyrosine kinase (Pyk2) phosphorylation in Sms2-expressing and catalytically nonactive Sms2-expressing cells. We observed that F-actin polymerization in the region of membrane fusion was more prominent in Sms2-expressing cells than Sms-deficient cells. Taken together, our research provides insight into a novel function of SMS2 which is the regulation of HIV-1 Env-mediated membrane fusion via actin rearrangement. 相似文献

Coupling with ATP hydrolysis and cooperating with GroES, the double ring chaperonin GroEL assists the folding of other proteins. Here we report novel GroEL-GroES complexes formed in fluoroberyllate (BeF(x)) that can mimic the phosphate part of the enzyme-bound nucleotides. In ATP, BeF(x) stops the functional turnover of GroEL by preventing GroES release and produces a symmetric 1:2 GroEL-GroES complex in which both GroEL rings contain ADP.BeF(x) and an encapsulated substrate protein. In ADP, the substrate protein-loaded GroEL cannot bind GroES. In ADP plus BeF(x), however, it can bind GroES to form a stable 1:1 GroEL-GroES complex in which one of GroEL rings contains ADP.BeF(x) and an encapsulated substrate protein. This 1:1 GroEL-GroES complex is converted into the symmetric 1:2 GroEL-GroES complex when GroES is supplied in ATP plus BeF(x). Thus, BeF(x) stabilizes two GroEL-GroES complexes; one with a single folding chamber and the other with double folding chambers. Background
The CogState Schizophrenia Battery (CSB), a computerized cognitive battery, covers all the same cognitive domains as the Measurement and Treatment Research to Improve Cognition in Schizophrenia (MATRICS) Consensus Cognitive Battery but is briefer to conduct. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the criterion and construct validity of the Japanese language version of the CSB (CSB-J) in Japanese patients with schizophrenia.Methodology/Principal Findings
Forty Japanese patients with schizophrenia and 40 Japanese healthy controls with matching age, gender, and premorbid intelligence quotient were enrolled. The CSB-J and the Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia, Japanese-language version (BACS-J) were performed once. The structure of the CSB-J was also evaluated by a factor analysis. Similar to the BACS-J, the CSB-J was sensitive to cognitive impairment in Japanese patients with schizophrenia. Furthermore, there was a significant positive correlation between the CSB-J composite score and the BACS-J composite score. A factor analysis showed a three-factor model consisting of memory, speed, and social cognition factors.Conclusions/Significance
This study suggests that the CSB-J is a useful and rapid automatically administered computerized battery for assessing broad cognitive domains in Japanese patients with schizophrenia. 相似文献69.

Molecular phylogenetic relationships among 25 species of the wood-feeding cockroach belonging to the genus Salganea St?l (Panesthiinae; Blaberidae) in Southeast Asia were analyzed based on the DNA sequence of the complete mitochondrial cytochrome
oxidase II (COII) gene. Most basal relationships among species of Salganea are poorly resolved by both neighbor-joining and nonweighted parsimony analyses, suggesting the possibility of a hard polytomy
due to a rapid and potentially simultaneous radiation early in the history of the genus. For more apical relationships, however,
some interesting phylogenetic relationships were recognized. The monophyly of the two species groups, morio and foveolata, the former of which is distributed mainly in the Sunda lands (containing the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java, and Borneo),
whereas the latter is Sulawesi endemic, was strongly supported. Based on the inferred phylogenetic patterns and recent palaeogeographic
scenario for Southeast Asia, it is suggested that a radiation of Salganea species occurred in Southeast Asia presumably in the early Tertiary, and several barriers against dispersal and gene flow,
such as the formation of straits or high mountains, have arisen from the middle Tertiary.
