Primary objective: To carry out a preliminary evaluation of subclinical inflammation and its genetic background in young adults.

Research design: Fifty-five healthy Japanese young adults aged 19-27 years (37 males and 18 females, mean age: 22.3 years), and 58 healthy Japanese adults aged 40 to 60 years (21 males and 37 females, mean age: 51.5 years) were included in this study.

Methods and procedures: We measured plasma high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels and screened for the C677T polymorphism of the 5-10 methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene (MTHFR), which is considered a genetic risk factor for atherosclerosis, by HinfI digestion.

Main outcomes and results: Hs-CRP levels of the young adult group were significantly lower than the levels of the middle aged group (0.014±0.030 mg/dl vs. 0.031±0.040 mg/dl, p=0.005). The levels were significantly higher in males than in females (0.028±0.019 mg/dl vs. 0.013±0.010 mg/dl, p=0.008) among young adults. Furthermore, we evaluated the relationship of the C677T genotype and hs-CRP values, but found no association between them.

Conclusions: Although the sample size is limited, our preliminary study demonstrated the profiles of hs-CRP in Japanese young adults. Further investigation will be needed to establish the guidelines for customized school health education using sensitive laboratory and genetic markers.  相似文献

Male Tokunagayusurika akamusi chironomids have alternative mating tactics.One is to search for females on vegetation (ground mating),and the other is to wait for females in an aerial swarm (swarmmating). Simultaneous sampling of ground-unpaired and ground-pairedmales and of swarm-unpaired and swarm-paired males were performed.The average wing length and right-left wing length difference(wing asymmetry) were compared between males from the four differentcategories. Swarm-unpaired males were larger than ground-unpaired ones,swarm-paired males were larger than swarm-unpaired ones, and ground-pairedmales were not larger than ground-unpaired ones. Thus, large malestended to aggregate in swarms, and larger swarming males matedmore successfully. On the other hand, small males probably enjoyedmating on the ground, especially when large males swarmed. Thewing asymmetry was not significantly different between unpairedand paired males both within and between tactics. There wasa flat or U-shaped relationship between wing length and asymmetry,underpinning the lack of a symmetrical advantage of swarmingto large males. The right-left difference was not normally distributedin four of six samples of unpaired males but, in contrast, wasnot normally distributed in only one of six samples of pairedmales. The non-normal distributions were leptokurtic and includedoutliers. Removal of the outliers improved normality, suggestingthat males with extremely asymmetric wings were not successfulin mating.  相似文献

Molecular species of several phospholipid classes and subclasses were quantitatively determined in human umbilical artery and vein endothelial cells. Both types of endothelial cells were similar in phospholipid class composition, whereas they were markedly different in phospholipid subclass and molecular species composition. The amounts of two ether subclasses in phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine were higher in artery endothelial cells than those in vein endothelial cells. The relative content of alkylacyl subclass in phosphatidylcholine, a precursor of platelet-activating factor, was about three times higher in artery endothelial cells than in vein endothelial cells. In artery endothelial cells, arachidonic acid was in highest amounts in alkenylacyl phosphatidylethanolamine, followed by diacyl phosphatidylcholine, diacyl phosphatidylethanolamine, and phosphatidylinositol. In the vein endothelial cells, arachidonic acid was highest in phosphatidylinositol, followed by diacyl phosphatidylethanolamine, diacyl phosphatidylcholine, and alkenylacyl phosphatidylethanolamine. Artery endothelial cells had higher amounts of molecular species containing arachidonic acid than vein endothelial cells in all phospholipid classes and subclasses. These differences are thought to reflect the functional differences of artery and vein endothelial cells.  相似文献

Micro total analysis system (μTAS) is expected to be applied in various fields. In particular, since electrochemical measurement is inexpensive and easy, electrochemical measurement can be integrated with a microchannel. However, electrochemical detection sensitivity in a microchannel is lowered because the diffusion of the detection target is limited. In an ordinary electrochemical detection system, using a stirrer in a beaker can overcome limited diffusion. We previously proposed a new detection system that combines a microliquid solution agitation technology using surface acoustic waves (SAWs) with the μTAS. The SAWs function as microstirrers, thus making electrochemical detection possible by overcoming limited diffusion of the sample. However, when the solution is stirred by the SAWs, the temperature of the solution increases to 70°C due to vibrational energy. This leads to enzyme inactivation and impaired electrochemical response. Therefore, in this study, we used a hyperthermophile-derived enzyme. Temperature and electrochemical characteristics of the detection system using SAWs and a multi-copper oxidase (MCO) derived from the hyperthermophilic archaea Pyrobaculum aerophilum were studied. Laccase, which is an MCO derived from the thermophilic fungus Trametes versicolor, was also studied. We also characterized the enzyme-electrochemical reaction using SAWs by comparing the magnitude of the reduction current obtained using the two enzymes with different heat resistances. We observed an increase in the electrochemical response with the SAWs, without impaired enzyme activity. Thus, the use of a thermostable enzyme is suitable for the development of a biosensor that uses SAWs for agitation.  相似文献

Summary The present work is a first attempt at calculating the absolute amount of the motive force responsible for the rotational protoplasmic streaming. The calculation was made on the basis of the conclusion we arrived at previously through the analysis of intracellular velocity distribution, namely, that the active driving mechanism responsible for the rotational streaming is located at the interface between the cortical gel and the outer edge of the endoplasmic layer. The motive force, which is the shifting force generated at this interface, was determined in the internodal cell ofNitella flexilis to be within the range of 1–2 dynes/cm2 at room temperature.Supported by a Grant for Fundamental Scientific Research from the Japanese Ministry of Education.  相似文献
