Objectives

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of aroma foot massage on blood pressure, anxiety, and health-related quality of life (QOL) in Japanese community-dwelling men and women using a crossover randomized controlled trial.

Methods

Fifty-seven eligible participants (5 men and 52 women) aged 27 to 72 were randomly divided into 2 intervention groups (group A: n = 29; group B: n = 28) to participate in aroma foot massages 12 times during the 4-week intervention period. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP, respectively), heart rate, state anxiety, and health-related QOL were measured at the baseline, 4-week follow-up, and 8-week follow-up. The effects of the aroma foot massage intervention on these factors and the proportion of participants with anxiety were analyzed using a linear mixed-effect model for a crossover design adjusted for participant and period effects. Furthermore, the relationship between the changes in SBP and state anxiety among participants with relieved anxiety was assessed using a linear regression model.

Results

Aroma foot massage significantly decreased the mean SBP (p = 0.02), DBP (p = 0.006), and state anxiety (p = 0.003) as well as the proportion of participants with anxiety (p = 0.003). Although it was not statistically significant (p = 0.088), aroma foot massage also increased the score of mental health-related QOL. The change in SBP had a significant and positive correlation with the change in state anxiety (p = 0.01) among participants with relieved anxiety.

Conclusion

The self-administered aroma foot massage intervention significantly decreased the mean SBP and DBP as well as the state anxiety score, and tended to increase the mental health-related QOL scores. The results suggest that aroma foot massage may be an easy and effective way to improve mental health and blood pressure.

Confluent monolayers of human umbilical vein endothelial cells subcultured on glass coverslips were loaded with the fluorescent Ca2+ indicator, fura-2. Changes in fura-2 fluorescence were detected by means of a fluorescence spectrophotometer. Both ATP and ADP (0.3-100 microM) caused a concentration-dependent transient peak response of the intracellular free calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i), followed by a lower sustained response. AMP and adenosine did not induce detectable changes in [Ca2+]i. The sustained response to ATP was abolished by superfusion with the Ca2(+)-free solution (with 1 mM EGTA), while the transient peak response was uninfluenced. The transient peak response to ATP (30 microM) was inhibited by pre-exposure to ATP in a graded manner depending on the concentration of ATP. The response to ATP recovered after washout for 20 min with the solution containing Ca2+, but not with the Ca2(+)-free solution. The transient peak response to ATP was markedly reduced by preceding exposure to histamine, while the response to histamine was not influenced by pre-exposure to ATP. These findings indicate that depletion and refilling of the ATP-sensitive intracellular Ca2+ store may be responsible for the desensitization and recovery of the ATP-induced [Ca2+]i response. The pharmacological characteristics of the ATP-sensitive intracellular Ca2+ store seem different from those of the histamine-sensitive store.  相似文献

Two isolectins were isolated from leaves of winged bean andcharacterized. They differed from each other in terms of theirimmunological properties, hemagglutinating activities, sugarinhibition patterns, and amino acid compositions. Both lectinswere acidic and one of them (L-I), which was inactive towardtrypsinized human type O erythrocytes, was similar to one ofgreen shell lectins (WGS-1); which resembled basic seed lectinin its immunological properties. The amino-terminal sequenceof L-I was homologous to that of WGS-1. The amino acid compositionof L-I was similar to that of basic seed lectin, but the extentof the homology between amino-terminal sequences was low whenL-I and basic seed lectin were compared. Examination by ELISArevealed that L-I and WGS-1 were distinct from the basic lectinsof seeds and tuberous roots. L-I had a disulfide bridge betweentwo subunits and it exhibited high hemagglutinating activitytoward human type A erythrocytes, as compared to its activitytoward other erythrocytes. By contrast, the properties of asecond acidic lectin from winged bean leaves (L-II) were verysimilar to those of acidic lectins from seeds and tuberous roots,and the similarities extended as far as the immunological properties. A simple and rapid technique was developed for the isolationof the vesicular Golgi membranes from suspension-cultured cellsof sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus L.). The procedure involvespreparation of protoplasts and differential centrifugation ofdisrupted protoplasts followed by the sucrose density gradientcentrifugation. Starting from broken protoplasts, sedimentableat two different centrifugal forces (10,000g and 100,000 g),two Golgi-enriched fractions of lower density, GF1 and GF'1,and higher density, GF2 and GF'2, were separated. Purity ofthe fraction was assessed by determining the marker enzyme activitiesas well as the electron microscopy of the specimens obtained. Inosine diphosphatase was enriched about 15- and 6-fold, respectively,in the GF2 fraction from 10,000g and the GF'2 one from 100,000gpellets, whereas the enrichment in GF1 and GF'1 was approximately6–7 fold. Galactosyl-transferase in GF2 was enriched about25-fold. GF1 and GF2 account for 3–4% of the total proteinof 10,000g pellets, and GF'1 and GF'2 for about 6–7%of the total protein of 100,000g pellets. Electron microscopicobservations show that GF2 and GF'2 consisted principally ofvesicular Golgi membranes without an internal matrix althoughGF1 and GF'1 were contaminated with ER membranes and ribosomes. Bananas, Musa (AAA group, Cavendish subgroup) 'Giant Cavendish', were ripened in a biotron at 25°C with ethylene during 4 days. Changes in mechanical properties of pulp were detected by a stress-relaxation technique. The decrease in T0, the parameter for minimum stress-relaxation time, began between day 0.5 and 1, while the decrease in initial stress began between day 0 and 0.5, suggesting that the decrease in elasticity and viscosity of pulp is a crucial physical event of pulp softening. Cellulose and moisture contents were about 3 and 780 mg (g fresh weight)−1, respectively, which were unchanged during ripening. The decrease in starch content of cell materials and in uronic acid content of the pectic polysaccharides of the cell walls began between day 0.5 and 1. As regards the sugar composition of the hemicellulose fraction, decreases in arabinose, mannose and galactose contents began between day 0 and 0.5. The results show that the partial decrease in hemicelluloses preceded the breakdown of starch and suggest that the coordinated degradation of pectic and hemicellulosic polysaccharides and starch is the main cause for the pulp softening process.  相似文献

Physiological high frequency activities (HFA) are related to various brain functions. Factors, however, regulating its frequency have not been well elucidated in humans. To validate the hypothesis that different propagation modes (thalamo-cortical vs. cortico-coritcal projections), or different terminal layers (layer IV vs. layer II/III) affect its frequency, we, in the primary somatosensory cortex (SI), compared HFAs induced by median nerve stimulation with those induced by electrical stimulation of the cortex connecting to SI. We employed 6 patients who underwent chronic subdural electrode implantation for presurgical evaluation. We evaluated the HFA power values in reference to the baseline overriding N20 (earliest cortical response) and N80 (late response) of somatosensory evoked potentials (HFASEP(N20) and HFASEP(N80)) and compared those overriding N1 and N2 (first and second responses) of cortico-cortical evoked potentials (HFACCEP(N1) and HFACCEP(N2)). HFASEP(N20) showed the power peak in the frequency above 200 Hz, while HFACCEP(N1) had its power peak in the frequency below 200 Hz. Different propagation modes and/or different terminal layers seemed to determine HFA frequency. Since HFACCEP(N1) and HFA induced during various brain functions share a similar broadband profile of the power spectrum, cortico-coritcal horizontal propagation seems to represent common mode of neural transmission for processing these functions.  相似文献

We examined the impact of opportunistic infections on in-hospital mortality, hospital length of stay (LOS), and the total cost (TC) among adult T-cell leukaemia (ATL) patients. In this retrospective cohort study, we identified 3712 patients with ATL using national hospital administrative data. Analysed opportunistic infections included Aspergillus spp., Candida spp., cytomegalovirus (CMV), herpes simplex virus (HSV), pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP), tuberculosis, varicella zoster virus (VZV), Cryptococcus spp., nontuberculous mycobacteria, and Strongyloides spp. Multilevel logistic regression analysis for in-hospital mortality and a multilevel linear regression analysis for LOS and TC were employed to determine the impact of opportunistic infections on clinical outcomes and healthcare resources. We found ATL patients infected with CMV had significantly higher in-hospital mortality (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 2.29 [1.50–3.49] p < 0.001), longer LOS (coefficient (B): 0.13 [0.06–0.20] p < 0.001) and higher TC (B: 0.25 [0.17–0.32] p < 0.001) than those without CMV. Those with CAN and PCP were associated with a lower in-hospital mortality rate (AOR 0.72 [0.53–0.98] p = 0.035 and 0.54[0.41–0.73] p < 0.001, respectively) than their infections. VZV was associated with longer LOS (B: 0.13 [0.06–0.19] p < 0.001), while aspergillosis, HSV, or VZV infections were associated with higher TC (B: 0.16 [0.07–0.24] p < 0.001, 0.12 [0.02–0.23] p = 0.025, and 0.17 [0.10–0.24] p < 0.001, respectively). Our findings reveal that CMV infection is a major determinant of poor prognosis in patients affected by ATL.  相似文献

In order to chemically identify the putative indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and to confirm the native source of auxins account for rapid elongation of the floral stalk of tulip, we examined diffusible IAA from various parts of tulip plant during rapid elongation of the flower stalk. IAA was identified in the diffusates collected from the leaves, internodes, and floral organs with gas chromatography (GC)–mass spectrometry. The amount of diffusible IAA from different plant organs followed the order of that the internodes > flower organs > leaves during the period of rapid elongation of the floral stalk. The diffusible IAA from internodes reached its peak amount at different time than did diffusible IAA from the flower. The results obtained indicated that the top internode is probably the major source of auxins account for rapid elongation of the flower stalk.  相似文献

Background

There is conflicting evidence regarding the benefit of adjunctive corticosteroid therapy in patients with Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia. We hypothesised that corticosteroid therapy could reduce mortality and length of stay (LOS) in such patients.

Methods

Adult patients with M. pneumoniae pneumonia from January 2010 to December 2013 were identified from the Japanese Diagnosis Procedure Combination inpatient database. The effects of low-dose and high-dose corticosteroid therapies on mortality, LOS, drug costs and hyperglycaemia requiring insulin treatment were evaluated using propensity score analyses.

Results

Eligible patients (n?=?2228) from 630 hospitals were divided into no-corticosteroid (n?=?1829), low-dose corticosteroid (n?=?267) and high-dose corticosteroid (n?=?132) groups. The propensity score-matched pairs were generated from no-corticoid and low-dose corticoid groups (251 pairs), or no-corticoid and high-dose corticosteroid groups (120 pairs). Adjunctive corticosteroid therapy did not decrease 30-day mortality. In addition, both low-dose and high-dose corticosteroid therapies were associated with increases in LOS. Furthermore, hyperglycaemia requiring insulin treatment and drug cost increased with corticosteroid use.

Conclusions

Adjunctive treatment with low-dose or high-dose corticosteroids may not be beneficial in M. pneumoniae pneumonia.
