The study presented an evaluation of the effect of culture history (sludge age) on the growth kinetics of a mixed culture grown under aerobic conditions. It involved an experimental setup where a lab-scale sequencing batch reactor was operated at steady-state at two different sludge ages (θX) of 2 and 10 days. The system sustained a mixed culture fed with a synthetic substrate mainly consisting of peptone. The initial concentration of substrate COD was selected around 500 mg COD/L. Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) storage occurred to a limited extent, around 30 mg COD/L for θX = 10 days and 15 mg COD/L for θX = 2 days. Evaluation of the experimental data based on calibration of two different models provided consistent and reliable evidence for a variable Monod kinetics where the maximum specific growth rate, was assessed as 6.1/day for θX = 2 days and 4.1/day for θX = 10 days. A similar variability was also applicable for the hydrolysis and storage kinetics. The rate of storage was significantly lower than the levels reported in the literature, exhibiting the ability of the microorganisms to regulate their metabolic mechanisms for adjusting the rate of microbial growth and storage competing for the same substrate. This adjustment evidently resulted in case-specific, variable kinetics both for microbial growth and substrate storage. 相似文献

A UV-cross-linking assay was used to identify RNA-binding proteins in mammalian mitochondria. A number of these proteins were detected ranging in molecular mass from 15 to 120 kDa. All of the mRNA-binding activities were localized to the matrix except for two proteins which are primarily associated with the inner membrane. None of the polypeptides is specific for binding mitochondrial mRNAs since all bound mRNAs from other sources with comparable efficiency. Some preference for binding mRNA over tRNA or homoribopolymers was observed with several of the proteins. A protein with characteristic pentatricopeptide repeat motifs found in many RNA binding proteins was identified associated with the small subunit of the mitochondrial ribosome. 相似文献

Although atropine and oximes are traditionally used in the management of organophosphate poisoning, investigations have been
directed to finding additional therapeutic approaches. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the cardiac effects of
magnesium sulfate pretreatment on dichlorvos intoxication in rats. Rats were randomly divided into three groups as control,
dichlorvos, and magnesium sulfate groups. After 6 h of dichlorvos or corn oil (as a vehicle) injection, venous blood samples
were collected, and cardiac tissue samples were obtained. Biochemical analyses were performed to measure some parameters on
serum and cardiac tissue. Immunohistochemical analyses of apoptosis and inducible nitric oxide (NO) synthase showed no change
in cardiac tissue. Serum cholinesterase levels were markedly depressed with dichlorvos, and further suppressed markedly with
magnesium sulfate pretreatment. Although we have demonstrated that serum NO levels in dichlorvos and magnesium sulfate groups
were lower than the control group, cardiac tissue NO levels in magnesium sulfate group were higher than the other two groups.
Mortality was not significantly affected with magnesium sulfate pretreatment. Uncertainty still persists on the right strategies
for the treatment of organophosphate acute poisoning; however, it was concluded that our results do not suggest that magnesium
sulfate therapy is beneficial in the management of acute dichlorvos-induced organophosphate poisoning, and also further studies

AbstractIntroduction: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a standard surgical treatment method which is generally applied to subthalamic nucleus in Parkinson’s patients in cases where medical treatment is insufficient in treating the motor symptoms. It is known that Subthalamic Nucleus Deep Brain Stimulation (STN-DBS) treats many motor symptoms. However, the results of studies on speech and voice vary. The aim of the study is analysing the effect of STN-DBS on the characteristics of voice.Materials/methods: A total of 12 patients, (8 male–4 female) with an age average of 58.8?±?9.6, who have been applied DBS surgery on STN included in the study. The voice recordings of the patients have been done prior to surgery and 6?months after the surgery. The evaluation of voice has been carried out through the instrumental method. The patients’ voice recordings of the /a,e,i/ vowels have been done. The obtained recordings were evaluated by the Praat programme and the effects on jhitter, shimmer, fundamental frequency (F0) and noise harmonic rate (NHR) were analysed.Results: Numerical values of F0 of all female participants have been decreased for all of the vowels postoperatively. In the females; jhitter and fraction parameters were found to be significantly different (0.056 and 0.017, perspectively) for the vowel /e/. In addition, p values in the shimmer for vowels /e,i/ were thought to be clinically significant (.087, .079 and .076) respectively. All these changes in second measurements were found to indicate worsening vocal quality after the DBS in females. In males, there is not any significant difference observed between two measures in any of the parameters of any vowels.Conclusions: Acoustic voice quality deteriorated after STN-DBS predominantly for females however this deterioration was not prominent audio-perceptually. This paper examines recent studies in behavioral science and health services aspects of geriatric dentistry. With the increased focus on special needs of older patients, researchers have become concerned with psychological and sociocultural factors that influence older people's oral health status, behavior, and attitudes. Studies of dental service utilization patterns among subgroups of the elderly, including those in long-term care settings, will be reviewed. Research on methods to improve oral health care behaviors will be discussed, with their implications for developing oral health promotion and service delivery programs. The special oral health needs of cognitively impaired and frail elderly will be reviewed. Studies of clinical decision-making in geriatric dentistry have been conducted. These studies have revealed significant gaps in dental professionals' knowledge and attention to the special needs of older patients. This and other aspects of behavioral research suggest the need for better methods to disseminate research findings in geriatric dentistry to clinical practice in this field. The presentation will discuss ways of improving dissemination and transfer of research findings to the clinical management of aged patients. 相似文献
