The ‘uncanny valley’ response is a phenomenon involving the elicitation of a negative feeling and subsequent avoidant behaviour in human adults and infants as a result of viewing very realistic human-like robots or computer avatars. It is hypothesized that this uncanny feeling occurs because the realistic synthetic characters elicit the concept of ‘human’ but fail to satisfy it. Such violations of our normal expectations regarding social signals generate a feeling of unease. This conflict-induced uncanny valley between mutually exclusive categories (human and synthetic agent) raises a new question: could an uncanny feeling be elicited by other mutually exclusive categories, such as familiarity and novelty? Given that infants prefer both familiarity and novelty in social objects, we address this question as well as the associated developmental profile. Using the morphing technique and a preferential-looking paradigm, we demonstrated uncanny valley responses of infants to faces of mothers (i.e. familiarity) and strangers (i.e. novelty). Furthermore, this effect strengthened with the infant''s age. We excluded the possibility that infants detect and avoid traces of morphing. This conclusion follows from our finding that the infants equally preferred strangers’ faces and the morphed faces of two strangers. These results indicate that an uncanny valley between familiarity and novelty may accentuate the categorical perception of familiar and novel objects.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to develop multiplex PCR detection method for five Pythium species associated with turfgrass diseases, Pythium aphanidermatum, Pythium arrhenomanes, Pythium graminicola, Pythium torulosum and Pythium vanterpoolii. Species‐specific primers and two common primers were designed based on the sequences of the internal transcribed spacer region of ribosomal DNA. Another primer set by which all organisms would be amplified in 18S rDNA was used as a positive control. When these total nine primers were applied to the multiplex PCR, all species were individually discriminated in the mixture of five species culture DNA. Furthermore, all five Pythium species were detected in naturally infected plants using the multiplex PCR.  相似文献

On age relationships of mineral contents in human bones, the contents of the sixth rib and a piece of its compact bone were determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICPS). The ribs were resected from 21 subjects (14 men and 7 women) who died in age ranging from 65 to 93 yr. There were no age-dependent decreases in Ca and P contents of the ribs in the age range on ICPS. It was found that there were no age-dependent decreases in Ca and P in compact bones of ribs.  相似文献

J. Cerella [Pattern Recognit. 12 (1980) 1] and more recently S. Watanabe [Behav. Proc. 53 (2001) 3] demonstrated that pigeons showed no decrement in recognizing cartoons that were spatially scrambled, indicating that pigeons' discriminative responding is controlled by local features alone. In contrast Kirkpatrick-Steger et al. [J. Exp. Psychol. Anim. Behav. Proc. 24 (1998) 34] used line drawings as stimuli and demonstrated the importance of spatial organization for picture recognition by pigeons, confirming related findings reported in their previous studies. The present study revisited the recognition of cartoons by pigeons. In Experiment 1, pigeons were trained to discriminate cartoon people on a variety of background scenes. Subsequent tests revealed that discriminative performances with both familiar and novel instances decreased as the objects and object-like parts were progressively fragmented, indicating that search for the targeted cartoon people in the stimulus array might have enhanced the pigeons to attend to global aspects of cartoon people. Experiment 2 used line drawings of cartoon faces as stimuli and examined effects of scrambling and deletion of components. A set of components (eyes and eyebrows) exerted strong control over behavior and scrambling only moderately suppressed responding. The results suggest that pigeons use both global and local aspects, with different mixtures of these types of information depending on the particular perceptual context.  相似文献

The quiescent state is thought to be an indispensable property for the maintenance of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). Interaction of HSCs with their particular microenvironments, known as the stem cell niches, is critical for adult hematopoiesis in the bone marrow (BM). Here, we demonstrate that HSCs expressing the receptor tyrosine kinase Tie2 are quiescent and antiapoptotic, and comprise a side-population (SP) of HSCs, which adhere to osteoblasts (OBs) in the BM niche. The interaction of Tie2 with its ligand Angiopoietin-1 (Ang-1) induced cobblestone formation of HSCs in vitro and maintained in vivo long-term repopulating activity of HSCs. Furthermore, Ang-1 enhanced the ability of HSCs to become quiescent and induced adhesion to bone, resulting in protection of the HSC compartment from myelosuppressive stress. These data suggest that the Tie2/Ang-1 signaling pathway plays a critical role in the maintenance of HSCs in a quiescent state in the BM niche.  相似文献

One of the two X chromosomes becomes inactivated during early development of female mammals. Recent studies demonstrate that the inactive X chromosome is rich in histone H3 methylated at Lys-9 and Lys-27, suggesting an important role for these modifications in X-inactivation. It has been shown that in the mouse Eed is required for maintenance of X-inactivation in the extraembryonic lineages. Interestingly, Eed associates with Ezh2 to form a complex possessing histone methyltransferase activity predominantly for H3 Lys-27. We previously showed that G9a is one of the histone methyltransferases specific for H3 Lys-9 and is essential for embryonic development. Here we examined X-inactivation in mouse embryos deficient for G9a. Expression of Xist, which is crucial for the initiation of X-inactivation, was properly regulated and the inactivated X chromosome was stably maintained even in the absence of G9a. These results demonstrate that G9a is not essential for X-inactivation.  相似文献

The D-sorbitol dehydrogenase gene, sldA, and an upstream gene, sldB, encoding a hydrophobic polypeptide, SldB, of Gluconobacter suboxydans IFO 3255 were disrupted in a check of their biological functions. The bacterial cells with the sldA gene disrupted did not produce L-sorbose by oxidation of D-sorbitol in resting-cell reactions at pHs 4.5 and 7.0, indicating that the dehydrogenase was the main D-sorbitol-oxidizing enzyme in this bacterium. The cells did not produce D-fructose from D-mannitol or dihydroxyacetone from glycerol. The disruption of the sldB gene resulted in undetectable oxidation of D-sorbitol, D-mannitol, or glycerol, although the cells produced the dehydrogenase. The cells with the sldB gene disrupted produced more of what might be signal-unprocessed SldA than the wild-type cells did. SldB may be a chaperone-like component that assists signal processing and folding of the SldA polypeptide to form active D-sorbitol dehydrogenase.  相似文献

Dendritic cells (DCs) are potent antigen-presenting cells (APCs). Among so-called professional APCs, only DCs can activate naive T cells to initiate immune response. To better understand molecular mechanisms underlying unique functions of DCs, we searched for genes specifically expressed in human DCs, using PCR-based cDNA subtraction in conjunction with differential screening. cDNAs generated from CD34(+) stem cell-derived CD1a(+) DC were subtracted with cDNA from monocytes and used for generation of a cDNA library. The cDNA library was differentially screened to select genes expressed in DCs more abundantly than in monocytes. We identified a gene encoding a protein composed of 244 amino acids, which we designated as DCNP1 (dendritic cell nuclear protein 1). In Northern blot analysis, DCNP1 mRNA was highly expressed in mature DCs and at a lower level in immature DCs. In contrast, monocytes and B cells do not express the gene. In multiple human tissue Northern blot analysis, expression of DCNP1 was detected in brain and skeletal muscle. To examine subcellular localization of DCNP1, we performed immunofluorescence analysis using an anti-DCNP1 polyclonal antibody and found the molecule to be localized mainly in the perinucleus. In an immunohistochemical analysis, we compared the expression of DCNP1 with CD68, a marker for DCs and macrophages, in spleen, lymph node, liver, and brain. While DCNP1-positive cells showed a similar tissue distribution to CD68-positive cells, the number of DCNP1-positive cells was much smaller than that of CD68-positive cells. Our findings are consistent with the proposal that DCNP1 is specifically expressed in DCs.  相似文献

Lysenin is a 33-kDa protein found in the coelomic fluid (CF) of the earthworm Eisenia foetida. Purified lysenin binds specifically to sphingomyelin (SM). In the present studies, we found that the white cloud mountain minnow Tanichthys albonubes and the Mozambique tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus died in solutions of lysenin (at concentrations above 2.5 microg/ml) and CF (0.6%, v/v) within 2 h. The gills of both species of fish were damaged similarly by lysenin and by CF. Most gill lamellae became irregularly bent or curled, with swelling of the epithelial cells of the lamellae. Red blood cells in the lamellar vascular sinuses, in the central venous sinuses, and in the blood vessels of the entire body became swollen and lysed, choking the sinuses. Epithelial cells in the skin were also damaged. When fish of both species were treated with lysenin or CF that had been incubated with SM-liposomes, they did not die. Their behavior remained normal and there was no damage to any cells or tissues. These findings suggest that SM might be involved in the lethal effects of lysenin and CF. It is likely that purified lysenin and lysenin in CF bound to SM in the cell membranes of the tissues mentioned above, damaging the cells. The presence of SM in the gills and skin was confirmed, supporting this hypothesis. The damage to gills and hemolysis might have resulted in lethal respiratory problems. Damage to the skin might disturb the exchange of ions through the skin, hastening death. Damage by lysenin and CF to epithelial cells of the cornea and the wall of the oral cavity was also recognized, but there was no such damage to the intestine.  相似文献
