Taxonomic notes on the genus Piper (Piperaceae)

Sixteen lectotypifications of Asian Piper species are provided. Piper argyrites, P. baccatum, P. leptostachyum, P. majusculum, P. peepuloides, P. quinqueangulatum and P. sulcatum are accepted as species and many new synonyms are proposed. Useful diagnostic characters are described and geographical distribution data of each species are provided.     

Detection of legumin gene DNA sequences in pea by in situ hybridization

In order to detect low copy number sequences in pea using biotin-labelled probes we optimised some aspects of the in situ hybridization technique. We found protoplast preparations to be superior to standard squashes in terms of their signal: noise ratio. Heat and alkali denaturation of chromosomal DNA were both more effective than acid denaturation. A comparison of antibody-fluorochrome and streptavidin-enzyme conjugates showed the streptavidin-alkaline phosphatase conjugate to be the most sensitive detection system. Using the optimised method, we were able to detect a single site for a 13.5 kb legumin gene clone.     

Growth factors which affect bone

The coupled processes of bone resorption and bone formation occur throughout life. New research suggests that some well-characterized growth factors affect bone and that transforming growth factors and tumor-derived growth factors may also influence bone growth and remodeling.     

Use of pH auxostats to grow filamentous fungi in continuous flow culture at maximum specific growth rate

Abstract The pH auxostat employs a pH-derived feedback control of biomass concentration and allows continuous flow cultures of organisms to be grown at their maximum specific growth rate. We examine three modifications of the pH auxostat system for the growth of filamentous fungi and discuss the suitability of each method according to the biomass concentration desired, the medium used and the equipment available. Fusarium graminearum and Geotrichum candidum were used for this work and it was possible to maintain steady state pH auxostats of these filamentous fungi for up to 20 days. pH auxostats have not previously been described for filamentous fungi.
