Lunaria annua is overviewed and its two subspecies, subsp. annua and subsp. pachyrrhiza, discussed, the latter described. Two cultivars of subsp. pachyrrhiza, ‘Corfu Blue’ and ‘Mistras’ are illustrated and described. Details of cultivation are also included.     

Epidermal growth factor stimulates vascular endothelial growth factor production by human malignant glioma cells: a model of glioblastoma multiforme pathophysiology.

Hypervascularity, focal necrosis, persistent cerebral edema, and rapid cellular proliferation are key histopathologic features of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), the most common and malignant of human brain tumors. By immunoperoxidase and immunofluorescence, we definitively have demonstrated the presence of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFr) in five out of five human glioma cell lines (U-251MG, U-105MG, D-65MG, D-54MG, and CH-235MG) and in eight human GBM tumor surgical specimens. In vitro experiments with glioma cell lines revealed a consistent and reliable relation between EGFr activation and VEGF production; namely, EGF (1-20 ng/ml) stimulation of glioma cells resulted in a 25-125% increase in secretion of bioactive VEGF. Conditioned media (CM) prepared from EGF-stimulated glioma cell lines produced significant increases in cytosolic free intracellular concentrations of Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Neither EGF alone or CM from glioma cultures prepared in the absence of EGF induced [Ca2+]i increases in HUVECs. Preincubation of glioma CM with A4.6.1, a monoclonal antibody to VEGF, completely abolished VEGF-mediated [Ca2+]i transients in HUVECs. Likewise, induction by glioma-derived CM of von Willebrand factor release from HUVECs was completely blocked by A4.6.1 pretreatment. These observations provide a key link in understanding the basic cellular pathophysiology of GBM tumor angiogenesis, increased vascular permeability, and cellular proliferation. Specifically, EGF activation of EGFr expressed on glioma cells leads to enhanced secretion of VEGF by glioma cells. VEGF released by glioma cells in situ most likely accounts for pathognomonic histopathologic and clinical features of GBM tumors in patients, including striking tumor angiogenesis, increased cerebral edema and hypercoagulability manifesting as focal tumor necrosis, deep vein thrombosis, or pulmonary embolism.     

Dual ultraviolet wavelength high-performance liquid chromatographic method for the forensic or clinical analysis of seventeen antidepressants and some selected metabolites

A sensitive method suitable for the determination of tricyclic and other antidepressants in postmortem and clinical specimens is presented. The procedure, which utilizes reversed-phase HPLC combined with dual ultraviolet wavelength detection, enables the separation of 17 commonly prescribed antidepressants and some selected metabolites in a single extraction. Peak purity was confirmed using absorbance ratios at 220 nm and 254 nm wavelengths and revealed little interference from other eluting analytes. The blood detection limit for most antidepressants was 50 ng/ml. The most commonly observed antidepressants in 281 forensic cases analysed over a two-year period with the described method were dothiepin, amitriptyline, nortriptyline and doxepin.     

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone in elasmobranch (electric ray, Torpedo marmorata) brain and plasma: chromatographic and immunological evidence for chicken GnRH II and novel molecular forms.

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) peptides in the brain, testis and plasma of an electric ray (Torpedo marmorata) were investigated by gel filtration chromatography, reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography and radioimmunoassay with region-specific antisera. In the brain, two major forms of GnRH were demonstrated. One form had identical chromatographic and immunological properties to chicken GnRH II, and the second, novel, molecular form had structural features in common with mammalian, chicken II and salmon GnRHs. A minor, early-eluting immunoreactive peak, possibly also a novel GnRH, was also evident. Immunoreactive GnRH was not detected in the testis. In the plasma, a single major early-eluting immunoreactive peak was demonstrated. This peak, identical to the minor peak observed in the brain, is likely to represent a novel form of GnRH which has immunological properties in common with mammalian, chicken II and salmon GnRHs. Immunoreactive GnRH was not detected in the plasma of species from other vertebrate classes, including rabbit, chicken, monitor lizard, clawed toad, frog, cichlid fish and lamprey. The finding of chicken GnRH II in a species of Chondrichthyes adds further support to our hypothesis that this widespread structural variant may represent an early-evolved and conserved form of GnRH. The presence of a GnRH molecular form in the plasma of the electric ray suggests that GnRH may reach target organs (pituitary and gonads) via the general circulation in some species of Chondrichthyes.     

The role of parasitoid and predator production in technology transfer of field crop biological control

The immediate goals for improving natural enemy production are to reduce costs, increase efficacy and provide additional species for pest management. This paper describes expanding markets for natural enemies that are or could be produced commercially, gives operational and experimental examples of parasitoid and predator production for use in field crop biological control, defines some of the obstacles and makes recommendations for producing and using natural enemies. Additionally, it provides recent published guidance for implementing biological control in Integrated Pest Management.
