Ecological intensification has been promoted as a means to achieve environmentally sustainable increases in crop yields by enhancing ecosystem functions that regulate and support production. There is, however, little direct evidence of yield benefits from ecological intensification on commercial farms growing globally important foodstuffs (grains, oilseeds and pulses). We replicated two treatments removing 3 or 8% of land at the field edge from production to create wildlife habitat in 50–60 ha patches over a 900 ha commercial arable farm in central England, and compared these to a business as usual control (no land removed). In the control fields, crop yields were reduced by as much as 38% at the field edge. Habitat creation in these lower yielding areas led to increased yield in the cropped areas of the fields, and this positive effect became more pronounced over 6 years. As a consequence, yields at the field scale were maintained—and, indeed, enhanced for some crops—despite the loss of cropland for habitat creation. These results suggested that over a 5-year crop rotation, there would be no adverse impact on overall yield in terms of monetary value or nutritional energy. This study provides a clear demonstration that wildlife-friendly management which supports ecosystem services is compatible with, and can even increase, crop yields. 相似文献

Snow cover and its spatio-temporal changes play a crucial role in the ecological functioning of mountains. Some human activities affecting snow properties may cause shifts in the biotic components of ecosystems, including decomposition. However, these activities remain poorly understood in subalpine environments. We explored the effect of human-modified snow conditions on cellulose decomposition in three vegetation types. Snow density, soil temperature, and the decomposition of cellulose were studied in Athyrium, Calamagrostis, and Vaccinium vegetation types, comparing stands intersected by groomed ski slope and natural (outside the ski slope) stands. Increased snow density caused the deterioration of snow insulation and decreased the soil temperature inside the ski slope only slightly in comparison with that outside the ski slope in all vegetation types studied. The decomposition was apparently lower in Athyrium vegetation relative to the other vegetation types and strongly (Athyrium vegetation) to weakly lower (other vegetation types) in groomed than in ungroomed stands. Wintertime, including the melting period, was decisive for overall decomposition. Our results suggest that differences in decomposition are influenced by ski slope operations and vegetation type. Alterations in snow conditions appeared to be subtle and long-term but with important consequences for conservation management. 相似文献

The behaviour of the nestlings of nocturnal cavity-nesting species has relatively rarely been studied in detail because of problems connected with use of the technical devices required to provide long-term monitoring of individuals. However, long-term observation of nestling behaviour is crucial in order to identify different types of behaviour which may be caused by sibling competition at the end of nesting period. We studied behaviour of 43 Tengmalm''s owl (Aegolius funereus) nestlings at 14 nests using a camera and a chip system. The nestlings perched at the nest box entrance from an average age of 28 days from hatching (range 24–34 days) until fledging, spending around 2 hours per day here in total, in periods ranging from a few seconds to 147 min (7.6±10.9 min, mean ± SD). We found that individual duration of perching at the nest box entrance was significantly influenced by nestlings'' age and wing length and that the duration of perching at the nest box entrance significantly decreased with time of night. However, during daylight hours, time of day had no effect on either probability or duration of nestlings'' perching. We suggest daylight perching at the nest box entrance results from nestlings'' preparation for fledging, while individuals perching here during the night may gain an advantageous position for obtaining food from the parents; another possibility at all times of day is that nestlings can reaffirm their social dominance status by monopolizing the nest box entrance. 相似文献

The rapid accumulation of knowledge on apoptosis regulation in the 1990s was followed by the development of several experimental anticancer‐ and anti‐ischaemia (stroke or myocardial infarction) drugs. Activation of apoptotic pathways or the removal of cellular apoptotic inhibitors has been suggested to aid cancer therapy and the inhibition of apoptosis was thought to limit ischaemia‐induced damage. However, initial clinical studies on apoptosis‐modulating drugs led to unexpected results in different clinical conditions and this may have been due to co‐effects on non‐apoptotic interconnected cell death mechanisms and the ‘yin‐yang’ role of autophagy in survival versus cell death. In this review, we extend the analysis of cell death beyond apoptosis. Upon introduction of molecular pathways governing autophagy and necrosis (also called necroptosis or programmed necrosis), we focus on the interconnected character of cell death signals and on the shared cell death processes involving mitochondria (e.g. mitophagy and mitoptosis) and molecular signals playing prominent roles in multiple pathways (e.g. Bcl2‐family members and p53). We also briefly highlight stress‐induced cell senescence that plays a role not only in organismal ageing but also offers the development of novel anticancer strategies. Finally, we briefly illustrate the interconnected character of cell death forms in clinical settings while discussing irradiation‐induced mitotic catastrophe. The signalling pathways are discussed in their relation to cancer biology and treatment approaches. 相似文献

Piston stapes prostheses are implanted in patients with refractory conductive or mixed hearing loss due to stapes otosclerosis to stimulate the perilymph with varying degrees of success. The overclosure effect described by the majority of researchers affects mainly low and medium frequencies, and a large number of patients report a lack of satisfactory results for frequencies above 2 kHz. The mechanics of perilymph stimulation with the piston have not been studied in a systematic manner. The objective of this study was to assess the influence of stapedotomy surgery on round window membrane vibration and to estimate the postoperative outcomes using the finite element (FE) method. The study hypothesis is that the three-dimensional FE model developed of the human inner ear, which simulates the round window (RW) membrane vibration, can be used to assess the influence of stapedotomy on auditory outcomes achieved after the surgical procedure. An additional objective of the study was to enable the simulation of RW membrane vibration after stapedotomy using a new type of stapes prosthesis currently under investigation at Warsaw University of Technology. A three-dimensional finite element (FE) model of the human inner ear was developed and validated using experimental data. The model was then used to simulate the round window membrane vibration before and after stapedotomy surgery. Functional alterations of the RW membrane vibration were derived from the model and compared with the results of experimental measurements from temporal bones of a human cadaver. Piston stapes prosthesis implantation causes an approximately fivefold (14 dB) lower amplitude of the RW membrane vibrations compared with normal anatomical conditions. A satisfactory agreement between the FE model and the experimental data was found. The new prosthesis caused an increase of 20–30 dB in the RW displacement amplitude compared with the 0.4-mm piston prosthesis. In all frequencies, the FE model predicted a RW displacement curve that was above the experimental curves for the normal ear. The stapedotomy can be well simulated by the FE model to predict the auditory outcomes achieved following this otosurgery procedure. The 3D FE model developed in this study may be used to optimize the geometry of a new type of stapes prosthesis in order to achieve a similar sound transmission through the inner ear as for a normal middle ear. In the present study, we used the method involving HPLC pre-purification followed by gas chromatography with isotope dilution mass spectrometric detection for the determination of 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-oxodGuo) and 8-oxo-7,8-dihydroguanine (8-oxoGua) in human urine. The mean levels of 8-oxoGua and 8-oxodGuo in the urine samples of the subjects on unrestricted diet were respectively 1.87 nmol/kg 24 h (±0.90) and 0.83 nmol/kg 24h (±0.49), and in the case of the groups studied, they did not depend on the applied diet. The sum of the amounts of both compounds in urine can give information about the formation rate of 8-oxoGua in cellular DNA. It is also likely that the levels of modified nucleo-base/side in urine sample are reflective of the involvement of different repair pathways responsible for the removal of 8-oxodGuo from DNA, namely base excision repair (BER) and nucleotide excision repair (NER). 相似文献
