An animal’s motivational state can significantly impact its behavior. We examined the effects of mating on the aggression
of male Acheta domesticus crickets. Pairs of males were allowed to establish dominance and subordinance and were then physically separated. Subordinate
males were then allowed to either copulate with a female or to have chemo-tactile contact with, but to not copulate with,
a female. Less than 15 min after separation, all male pairs engaged in a second agonistic encounter. Subordinate males that
copulated with females were significantly more aggressive toward their dominant partners than un-mated subordinate males.
Many mated subordinates became dominant. Allowing a subordinate male to contact, but not copulate with, a female had a similar

Shoulder pathology is a growing concern for the aging population, athletes, and laborers. Shoulder osteoarthritis and rotator cuff disease represent the two most common disorders of the shoulder leading to pain, disability, and degeneration. While research in cartilage regeneration has not yet been translated clinically, the field of shoulder arthroplasty has advanced to the point that joint replacement is an excellent and viable option for a number of pathologic conditions in the shoulder. Rotator cuff disease has been a significant focus of research activity in recent years, as clinicians face the challenge of poor tendon healing and irreversible changes associated with rotator cuff arthropathy. Future treatment modalities involving biologics and tissue engineering hold further promise to improve outcomes for patients suffering from shoulder pathologies. 相似文献

Disorders known to be caused by molecular and cytogenetic abnormalities of the proximal short arm of chromosome 17 include Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A (CMT1A), hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies (HNPP), Smith-Magenis syndrome (SMS), and mental retardation and congenital anomalies associated with partial duplication of 17p. We identified a patient with multifocal mononeuropathies and mild distal neuropathy, growth hormone deficiency, and mild mental retardation who was found to have a duplication of the SMS region of 17p11.2 and a deletion of the peripheral myelin protein 22 (PMP22) gene within 17p12 on the homologous chromosome. Further molecular analyses reveal that the dup(17)(p11.2p11.2) is a de novo event but that the PMP22 deletion is familial. The family members with deletions of PMP22 have abnormalities indicative of carpal tunnel syndrome, documented by electrophysiological studies prior to molecular analysis. The chromosomal duplication was shown by interphase FISH analysis to be a tandem duplication. These data indicate that familial entrapment neuropathies, such as carpal tunnel syndrome and focal ulnar neuropathy syndrome, can occur because of deletions of the PMP22 gene. The co-occurrence of the 17p11.2 duplication and the PMP22 deletion in this patient likely reflects the relatively high frequency at which these abnormalities arise and the underlying molecular characteristics of the genome in this region. 相似文献

The current pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) and outbreaks of new variants highlight the need for preventive treatments. Here, we identified heparan sulfate proteoglycans as attachment receptors for SARS‐CoV‐2. Notably, neutralizing antibodies against SARS‐CoV‐2 isolated from COVID‐19 patients interfered with SARS‐CoV‐2 binding to heparan sulfate proteoglycans, which might be an additional mechanism of antibodies to neutralize infection. SARS‐CoV‐2 binding to and infection of epithelial cells was blocked by low molecular weight heparins (LMWH). Although dendritic cells (DCs) and mucosal Langerhans cells (LCs) were not infected by SARS‐CoV‐2, both DC subsets efficiently captured SARS‐CoV‐2 via heparan sulfate proteoglycans and transmitted the virus to ACE2‐positive cells. Notably, human primary nasal cells were infected by SARS‐CoV‐2, and infection was blocked by pre‐treatment with LMWH. These data strongly suggest that heparan sulfate proteoglycans are important attachment receptors facilitating infection and transmission, and support the use of LMWH as prophylaxis against SARS‐CoV‐2 infection. 相似文献

The histological effect on and stress response of post juvenile Clarias gariepinus exposed to Qua Iboe crude oil and rig wash were investigated. Fish weighing 60–90 g and measuring 16–18 cm were exposed for 7–28 days to 8.00 ml?1 Qua Iboe crude oil and 0.0018 ml–1 rig wash, both being 0.1 of the 96 hr LC50. Blood samples of C. gariepinus were collected every seven days and evaluated for stress by measuring cortisol concentration. The gills and liver were studied and scored for Gill Alteration Index (GAI) and Hepatic Alteration Index (HAI), respectively. There was an increase in cortisol level up to the 7th and 14th day among the group exposed to Qua Iboe crude oil, with a decrease on the 21st and 28th day. The rig wash group increased in cortisol level up to the 7th day and decreased slightly on the 14th day, after which the trend became irregular. The toxic effects of the Qua Iboe crude oil and rig wash were time dependent, as shown by the histopathological alteration index (HAI) of gill and liver. After 28 days of exposure, the gills had irreparable damage due to high frequency of cellular necrosis and degeneration, whereas the liver had from moderate to severe damage due to the high frequency of cellular degeneration and inflammation. Qua Iboe crude oil and rig wash are both toxic to C. gariepinus, therefore their indiscriminate discharge to the environment must be discouraged. 相似文献

The present study was conducted to determine the affect of pre-treating of oocytes and/or sperm with a rabbit polyclonal antibody against recombinant cattle lipocalin type prostaglandin D synthase (alpha L-PGDS) on in vitro sperm-oocyte binding and fertilization. In vitro matured cattle oocytes were incubated (39 degrees C, 5% CO(2) in air) for 1h in the following treatments either 500 microL of fertilization medium (FM) or FM with alpha L-PGDS (1:2000). Frozen-thawed spermatozoa were washed by a 45/90% layered Percoll gradient centrifugation and incubated for 1h either FM or FM with alpha L-PGDS. This study utilized five different treatments: (1) no antibody (control); (2) a rabbit IgG against a non-bovine antigen, bacterial histidase (alpha-hist); (3) alpha L-PGDS at fertilization time (with fertilization medium); (4) alpha L-PGDS-treated oocytes; or (5) alpha L-PGDS-treated sperm. Pre-treated oocytes were incubated with 10 x 10(4) washed spermatozoa per 25 oocytes. Oocytes used to assess sperm binding were stained with Hoescht 33342, and the number of sperm bound per zonae pellucidae counted. The remaining oocytes were fixed in acid alcohol, stained with 1% acetate-orcein and observed to determine the presence of pronuclei. More sperm bound to the zonae pellucidae when oocytes and/or sperm were pre-treated with alpha L-PGDS: (1) 26.4+/-3.0; (2) 25.6+/-3.0; (3) 59.7+/-3.0; (4) 56.4+/-3.0; and (5) 57.1+/-3.0. Addition of alpha L-PGDS with sperm, oocytes, or both, decreased fertilization (P<0.05) compared with the control: (1) 89.2+/-2.0%; (2) 87.5+/-2.0%; (3) 19.4+/-2.0%; (4) 27.2+/-3.1%; and (5) 14.1+/-3.4%. The alpha L-PGDS reacts with both oocytes and spermatozoa, resulting in increases of in vitro sperm-oocyte binding and inhibition of fertilization. This study was designed to investigate the effects of pre-incubating cattle spermatozoa or matured oocytes with purified osteopontin (OPN) from cattle milk on fertilization in cattle and embryonic development in vitro. There were two different experiments, semen from six mature Holstein bulls (Bos Taurus) was frozen with different concentrations of OPN (0, 1, 10, 100 μg/mL). Matured cattle oocytes were also pre-treated with OPN (0, 10, 100 μg/mL). In both experiments, pre-treated oocytes or frozen semen, was processed for in vitro fertilization and embryo development. Significantly more oocytes were fertilized when using frozen semen with 10 μg/mL OPN (bull 2 = 85 ± 4% and bull 5 = 78 ± 4%) than without OPN (bull 2 = 75 ± 4% and bull 5 = 69 ± 4%). Those bulls also had increase in cleavage and embryo development (bull 2 = 85 ± 3%, 41 ± 1.9%; bull 5 = 76 ± 2%, 37 ± 1.8%) compared with control (bull 2 = 75 ± 3%, 30 ± 2%; bull 5 = 68 ± 2%, 29 ± 2%). Incubating matured oocytes in 10 μg/mL OPN (87 ± 3%) and 100 μg/mL OPN (88 ± 3%) significantly increased fertilization than control (73 ± 3%). OPN also improve cleavage, and embryo development in treatments with 10 μg/mL OPN (82.7 ± 1.3%; 31.7 ± 1.4%) and 100 μg/mL OPN (85.8 ± 1.3%; 33.8 ± 1.5%) when compared with control (74.1 ± 1.3%; 24.2 ± 1.2%). These data suggest that both, spermatozoa from some bulls and oocytes may associate with OPN, suggesting a facilitory role on in vitro fertilization and embryo development. 相似文献
