Polyethylene dispensers (Shin Etsu) containing 172 ml of the sex pheromone, (E, E)-8,10-dodecadien-1-ol (63%), dodecenol (31%) and tetradecenol (6%), of codling moth (CM),Cydia pomonella (L.), were placed in apple orchards in Virginia. Two blocks of about 2 ha each were treated in 1989, and three in 1990. Dispensers
were placed in trees at a density of 1000/ha shortly after apple bloom. Male orientation to pheromone traps was almost totally
disrupted (a few males were captured at high population densities). In 1989, the Daleville pheromone-treated block had 0.9%
and 0.8% CM-injured fruit in the center and edge, respectively; 0% and 39.5% injured fruit were found in the conventional
control and abandoned blocks, respectively. The Criglersville orchard (‘organically’ managed, with high CM density) CM harvest
injury was 16.0%, 16.5%, 34.5%, and 26.5% in the pheromone-treated center and edge, organic control and abandoned blocks,
respectively. In 1990, the Daleville CM harvest injury was 4.7%, 7.3%, 1.1%, 0.3% and 58%, in the pheromone-treated center
and edge, control center and edge, and abandoned blocks, respectively (possible reasons for the high injury in this block
are discussed). Harvest injury in the Fincastle pheromone-treated and control blocks were 0.7% and 0%, respectively. The Criglersville
orchard yielded 17%, 19% and 20% CM-injured fruit at harvest in the pheromone-treated, organic control and abandoned blocks,

The persulfate anion (S2O8 2?) is a strong oxidant with a redox potential of 2.01 V. However, when mixed with iron (II), it is capable of forming the sulfate radical (SO4 ?.) that has an even higher redox potential (E o = 2.6 V). In these studies the sulfate radical was investigated to determine if it was a feasible oxidant for the destruction of BTEX and PAH compounds found in MGP contaminated soil. The sulfate radical was generated by either the sequential addition of iron (II) solutions or by a single addition of a citric acid chelated iron (II) solution. The sequentially added iron destroyed 86% of the total BTEX concentration and 56% of the total PAH concentration in the soil. The citric acid chelated iron destroyed 95% of the total BTEX concentration and 85% of the total PAH concentration. A second dose of persulfate and citric acid chelated iron (II) resulted in the destruction of 99% of the total BTEX concentration and 92% of the total PAH concentration. In both the sequential and chelated iron studies the lower molecular weight BTEX compounds were oxidized to a greater extent than the higher molecular weight BTEX compounds, whereas the oxidation of PAH compounds showed no preference to molecular weight. 相似文献

Three skeletal tissues of the adult echinoid Paracentrotus lividus (the pedicellaria primordium, the test, and the tooth) were immunolabeled with three sera raised against the total mineralization organic matrix and two specific matrix proteins (SM30 and SM50) from the embryo of the echinoid Strongylocentrotus purpuratus. Two conventional chemical fixation protocols and two high-pressure freezing/freeze-substitution protocols were tested. One conventional protocol is recommended for its good preservation of the ultrastructure, and one high-pressure freezing/freeze-substitution protocol is recommended for its good retention of antigenicity. Immunolabeling was obtained in the three adult tissues. It was confined to the active skeleton-forming cells and to the structured organic matrix. The results indicate that the matrix proteins follow the classical routes of secretory protein assembly and export and suggest that SM30 and SM50 are a part of the tridimensional network formed by the organic matrix before the onset of mineralization. They show that the genetic program of part of skeletogenesis is conserved among different calcification models and developmental stages. 相似文献

Summary A No. 15 chromosome with a short arm longer than usual is observed in two phenotypically normal brothers. This chromosome appears to have no visible satellite, shows no N-band staining, and is never involved in satellite association. The energetics of interaction and the type of aggregate structure in lateral assemblies of up to five gramicidin molecules in the beta 6.3 helical conformation at the air/water interface was calculated using conformational analysis procedures. It was found that within the aggregate two types of gramicidin interaction occur. One leading to a linear organization with a mean interaction energy between monomers of -6 kcal/mol and one in a perpendicular direction leading to a circularly organization with a lower mean interaction energy of -10 kcal/mol. Extrapolation towards larger gramicidin assemblies predicts that gramicidin itself could form tubular structures similar to those found in the gramicidin-induced HII phase. The tryptophans appear to play an essential role in the tubular organization of the gramicidin aggregate, since they determine the cone shape of the monomer and contribute to the structure of the monomer and oligomer by stacking interactions. These results, which are discussed in the light of experimental observations of gramicidin self-association in model membranes and the importance of the tryptophans for HII phase formation, further support the view (Killian, J.A. and De Kruijff, B. (1986) Chem. Phys. Lipids 40, 259-284) that gramicidin is a first example of a new class of hydrophobic polypeptides which can form cylindrical structures within the hydrophobic core of the membrane. 相似文献
