The Atlantic killer whale (Orcinus orca) is a top‐level marine predator with a global range, being found in all of Earth's oceans. The potential interaction between killer whales and marine renewable energy projects requires surveillance and monitoring efforts that call for new technologies, with marine radar showing promise in the field. Marine radar images recorded at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) were used to track a pair of male killer whales undertaking Surface Active Behavior (SAB) with visual observations used as validation. Using a tidal prediction model, the tide‐adjusted, radar‐derived target speeds between SAB events provide estimates of swim speeds averaging 4 m/s and time between SAB events of 30 s. The similarities between the radar signatures of the animals and sea clutter, combined with their low occurrence compared to other imaged phenomena renders automatic detection with this system difficult. However, the combination of opportunistic radar imagery and independent visual observation has allowed the radar signature of one form of killer whale SAB to be documented. It is hoped that with a greater number of validated observations such as these that automated, radar‐based identification and the benefits it will bring to long‐term observations at MRE sites will be possible.  相似文献

Amino acid, nitrogen and sulfur metabolism play critical roles in the growth and development of fungal pathogens both in and outside of the host. The genome sequence of Ustilago maydis provides an opportunity for exploring these biochemical pathways by comparison to known gene sequences from other fungi. This approach was used to identify candidate genes for almost all enzymes required for amino acid biosynthesis and degradation, as well as the uptake and assimilation of nitrogen and sulfur. A number of differences were found between U. maydis and other basidiomycetes, and between basidiomycetes and ascomycetes in general. The use of genomics to explore central metabolic pathways may be of value in characterizing strict biotrophic pathogens like U. maydis that seem to derive a very limited set of nutrients from the host and thus must retain extensive biosynthetic capacity.  相似文献

Many bacterial pathogens require a type III secretion system (T3SS) and suite of type III secreted effectors (T3SEs) to successfully colonize their hosts, extract nutrients and consequently cause disease. T3SEs, in particular, are key components of the bacterial arsenal, as they function directly inside the host to disrupt or suppress critical components of the defence network. The development of host defence and surveillance systems imposes intense selective pressures on these bacterial virulence factors, resulting in a host–pathogen co-evolutionary arms race. This arms race leaves its genetic signature in the pattern and structure of natural genetic variation found in T3SEs, thereby permitting us to infer the specific evolutionary processes and pressures driving these interactions. In this review, we summarize our current knowledge of T3SS-mediated host–pathogen co-evolution. We examine the evolution of the T3SS and the T3SEs that traverse it, in both plant and animal pathosystems, and discuss the processes that maintain these important pathogenicity determinants within pathogen populations. We go on to examine the possible origins of T3SEs, the mechanisms that give rise to new T3SEs and the processes that underlie their evolution.  相似文献

Background  

The endometrium is commonly infected with bacteria leading to severe disease of the uterus in cattle and humans. The endometrial epithelium is the first line of defence for this mucosal surface against bacteria and Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are a critical component of the innate immune system for detection of pathogen associated molecular patterns (PAMPs). Antimicrobial peptides, acute phase proteins and Mucin-1 (MUC-1) also provide non-specific defences against microbes on mucosal surfaces. The present study examined the expression of innate immune defences in the bovine endometrium and tested the hypothesis that endometrial epithelial cells express functional receptors of the TLR family and the non-specific effector molecules for defence against bacteria.  相似文献

Habitat coupling is an ecosystem process whereby semi-discontinuous habitats are connected through the movement of energy and nutrients by chemical, physical or biological processes. One oft-cited example is that of littoral–pelagic coupling in lakes. Theory has argued that such habitat coupling may be critical to food web dynamics, yet there have been few empirical studies that have quantified ecological factors that affect the degree of habitat coupling in ecosystems. Specifically, the degree to which habitat coupling occurs across important physical gradients has largely been ignored. To address this, we investigate the degree of littoral habitat coupling (i.e. the degree to which a top predator lake trout, Salvelinus namaycush, derives energy from the littoral zone) along a gradient of lake shape, where lake shape modifies the relative quantity of coupled epilimnetic benthic and pelagic habitats within each lake. Herein we demonstrate that littoral habitat coupling is intensified in simple circular lakes compared to their reticulate counterparts in seven Canadian Shield lakes. Although the more reticulate lakes had larger areas of epilimnetic benthic habitat, littoral food sources comprised 11% compared to 24% of lake trout diet in reticulate and circular lakes, respectively. This heightened interaction in circular lakes also appears to translate into increased omnivory in more circular lakes compared to reticulate lakes such that lake trout of circular lakes have a significantly lower trophic position than lake trout of reticulate lakes (F1,5=6.71 p=0.05). These results suggest that it is the accessibility of littoral production via thermal refugia, and not the amount of littoral production, that determines the degree to which lake trout couple littoral and pelagic habitats in lakes.  相似文献

Here, we synthesize a number of recent empirical and theoretical papers to argue that food-web dynamics are characterized by high amounts of spatial and temporal variability and that organisms respond predictably, via behaviour, to these changing conditions. Such behavioural responses on the landscape drive a highly adaptive food-web structure in space and time. Empirical evidence suggests that underlying attributes of food webs are potentially scale-invariant such that food webs are characterized by hump-shaped trophic structures with fast and slow pathways that repeat at different resolutions within the food web. We place these empirical patterns within the context of recent food-web theory to show that adaptable food-web structure confers stability to an assemblage of interacting organisms in a variable world. Finally, we show that recent food-web analyses agree with two of the major predictions of this theory. We argue that the next major frontier in food-web theory and applied food-web ecology must consider the influence of variability on food-web structure.  相似文献

Salmonella typhimurium and Campylobacter jejuni pose significant risks to human health and poultry are a major vector for infection. Comparative in vivo infection models were performed to compare the avian host immune response to both bacterial species. Forty-five commercial broiler chickens were orally challenged with either C. jejuni or S. typhimurium whilst 60 similar control birds were mock challenged in parallel. Birds were sacrificed at 0, 6, 20 and 48 h post-infection and cloacal swabs, blood and tissue samples taken. Peripheral blood leukocytes were isolated for flow cytometric analyses and RNA was extracted for gene expression profiling. Colonisation patterns were markedly different between the two bacterial species, with systemic colonisation of Campylobacter outside the gastrointestinal tract. Salmonella infection induced significant changes in circulating heterophil and monocyte/macrophage populations, whilst Campylobacter infection had no effect on the heterophil numbers but caused a significant early increase in circulating monocytes/macrophages. Toll-like receptor 1 (TLR1) gene expression was decreased, and avian β-defensin (AvBD) gene expression (AvBD3, AvBD10 and AvBD12) was significantly increased in response to Salmonella infection (P < 0.05). In contrast, Campylobacter infection induced increased TLR21 gene expression but significantly reduced expression of seven antimicrobial peptide (AMP) genes (AvBD3, AvBD4, AvBD8, AvBD13, AvBD14, CTHL2 and CTHL3; P < 0.05). Considered together, microbiological, cellular and gene expression profiles indicate that the innate immune system responds differently to Salmonella and to Campylobacter infection. Furthermore, reduction in the expression of AMPs may play a role in the persistence of high level colonisation of the host by Campylobacter.
