To predict the response of aquatic ecosystems to future global climate change, data on the ecology and distribution of keystone groups in freshwater ecosystems are needed. In contrast to mid‐ and high‐latitude zones, such data are scarce across tropical South America (Neotropics). We present the distribution and diversity of chironomid species using surface sediments of 59 lakes from the Andes to the Amazon (0.1–17°S and 64–78°W) within the Neotropics. We assess the spatial variation in community assemblages and identify the key variables influencing the distributional patterns. The relationships between environmental variables (pH, conductivity, depth, and sediment organic content), climatic data, and chironomid assemblages were assessed using multivariate statistics (detrended correspondence analysis and canonical correspondence analysis). Climatic parameters (temperature and precipitation) were most significant in describing the variance in chironomid assemblages. Temperature and precipitation are both predicted to change under future climate change scenarios in the tropical Andes. Our findings suggest taxa of Orthocladiinae, which show a preference to cold high‐elevation oligotrophic lakes, will likely see range contraction under future anthropogenic‐induced climate change. Taxa abundant in areas of high precipitation, such as Micropsectra and Phaenopsectra, will likely become restricted to the inner tropical Andes, as the outer tropical Andes become drier. The sensitivity of chironomids to climate parameters makes them important bio‐indicators of regional climate change in the Neotropics. Furthermore, the distribution of chironomid taxa presented here is a vital first step toward providing urgently needed autecological data for interpreting fossil chironomid records of past ecological and climate change from the tropical Andes.  相似文献

The effect of chlorflurenol (methyl 2-chloro-9-hydroxyfluorene-9-carboxylate) (CF) on chlorophyll (chl) content was studied in intact plants and floating leaf disks. For intact soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) plants grown in the growth chamber, 2.5 g/ml CF applied 10 to 20 d after planting retarded chl decline in senescing tissues such as cotyledons and unifoliate leaves and increased chl content in recently expanded tissues such as trifoliate leaves. CF did not retard chl decline in the dark unless regulator application was followed by a period of 24 h in the light prior to darkness. In floating leaf disk tests, CF retarded chl decline in dock (Rumex obtusifolius L.) and radish (Raphanus sativus L.) at concentrations of 10–4 M, but was ineffective at lower concentrations. Chl decline was significantly hastened by CF in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) and soybean, but was unchanged in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.).CF treatment increased tissue weight (g fresh wt/cotyledon; g dry wt/ cm2 for unifoliate and trifoliate leaves), decreased moisture content, and increased leaf thickness, palisade layer thickness, and palisade and spongy mesophyll cell counts. We conclude that plants treated with morphactins show greater green coloration predominantly because of growth effects, and only in small part because of prevention of chl decline in senescing tissues.This paper reports results of research only. Cytoplasmic triazine tolerance and cytoplasmic male sterility traits were combined in the nuclear genomic background of the Brassica napus variety Regent, following protoplast fusion, selection of fusion products by manual micro-manipulation, and culture in a Nicotiana tabacum nurse system. Whole plant cybrid regenerants were morphologically normal and produced seed on pollination, demonstrating their potential for incorporation into a breeding program.  相似文献

Summary The acquisition of the ability to ferment galactose, maltose, sucrose, raffinose and melibiose by yeast strains of the genus Saccharomyces was investigated. During cultivation in selective media 11 strains belonging to 5 species gained the ability to ferment one or several of these sugars. De-adaptation was not usually observed after cultivation in glucose medium, indicating that the saltants are stable in this medium.  相似文献

A new yeast species is described,C. steatolytica, which strongly hydrolizes fat and grows withi-inositol as the sole source of carbon. Summary Stock cultures of yeast strains which have acquired the ability to ferment and assimilate various sugars often represent a mixed population in regard to these features.Usually de-adaptation was not found after cultivation in glucose medium, indicating that the saltations are stable in this medium.The lyophilized cultures revived in glucose medium have the original characteristics of the strains.When single-cell colonies of various strains unable to utilize the appropriate sugar were grown in a liquid medium containing either galactose, sucrose or maltose, cells fermenting the sugar offered were found in the cultures. The acquisition of maltose-fermenting ability and the simultaneous acquisition of ability to utilize either galactose and raffinose, sucrose and raffinose, maltose and sucrose, or maltose, sucrose and -methyl-d-glucoside were observed.By an identification according to the acquired features the yeasts concerned have to be classified in other species than the original strain.  相似文献

A new yeast species with basidiomycetous affinities is described as Candida sonckii Hopsu-Havu et al. It differs from C. fujisanensis and C. maris by growing with KNO3 as nitrogen source, from C. vanderwaltii by its lower mol % G+C, lower maximum temperature for growth and failure to grow on D-arabinose and citrate.  相似文献

Actin-interacting protein 1 (Aip1p) is a 67-kDa WD repeat protein known to regulate the depolymerization of actin filaments by cofilin and is conserved in organisms ranging from yeast to mammals. The crystal structure of Aip1p from Saccharomyces cerevisiae was determined to a 2.3-A resolution and a final crystallographic R-factor of 0.204. The structure reveals that the overall fold is formed by two connected seven-bladed beta-propellers and has important implications for the structure of Aip1 from other organisms and WD repeat-containing proteins in general. These results were unexpected because a maximum of 10 WD repeats had been reported in the literature for this protein using sequence data. The surfaces of the beta-propellers formed by the D-A and B-C loops are positioned adjacent to one another, giving Aip1p a shape that resembles an open "clamshell." The mapping of conserved residues to the structure of Aip1p reveals dense patches of conserved residues on the surface of one beta-propeller and at the interface of the two beta-propellers. These two patches of conserved residues suggest a potential binding site for F-actin on Aip1p and that the orientation of the beta-propellers with respect to one another plays a role in binding an actin-cofilin complex. In addition, the conserved interface between the domains is mediated by a number of interactions that appear to impart rigidity between the two domains of Aip1p and may make a large substrate-induced conformational change difficult.  相似文献

Enzyme immunoassays (EIA) are commonly utilized for the evaluation of androgens in biological fluids; however, careful consideration must be given to cross-reactivity with other endogenous sex-steroid hormones. Our purpose was to determine the validity of a commonly-utilized commercially-available dihydrotestosterone (DHT) EIA. Serum samples obtained from older hypogonadal men who participated in a 12-month randomized controlled trial evaluating the effects of testosterone-enanthate (125 mg/week) or vehicle in combination with finasteride (5 mg/day) or placebo were assayed for DHT via EIA and using a validated gold-standard LC–MS/MS approach. Additionally, commercially-available (DHT-free) buffer containing graded testosterone doses was evaluated by DHT immunoassay. DHT concentrations measured via EIA were 79% to >1000% higher than values obtained by LC–MS/MS (p < 0.05), with the largest differences (415–1128%) occuring in groups receiving finasteride. Both LC–MS/MS and EIA indicated that testosterone-enanthate increased serum DHT to a similar magnitude. In contrast, finasteride-induced reductions in DHT were detected by LC–MS/MS, but not EIA (p < 0.05). No significant associations were present for DHT concentrations between measurement techniques. Cross-reactivity of testosterone with the immunoassay ranged from 18% to 99% and DHT concentrations measured by EIA were highly associated with the spiked testosterone concentrations in DHT-free buffer (r = 0.885, p < 0.001). In conclusion, we provide evidence invalidating a commonly-utilized commercially-available DHT immunoassay because significant cross-reactivity exists between testosterone and the EIA and because the changes in DHT observed via EIA were not associated with a validated gold-standard measurement technique. The cross-reactivity of testosterone is particularly concerning because testsoterone is present in 100-fold greater concentrations than is DHT within the circulation.  相似文献
