Aims

To investigate the effects of fertilization and bacterial inoculation on the growth, health and Ni phytoextraction capacity of three Ni-hyperaccumulators, Odontarrhena bracteata, O. inflata and O. serpyllifolia.

Methods

Plants were grown for three months in serpentine soil fertilized with inorganic NPK or amended with cow manure and inoculated with five rhizobacterial strains (previously isolated from O. serpyllifolia). Shoot and root dry weight (DW) yields, Ni accumulation and removal, nutritive status and stress indicators were determined.

Results

Plants grown in manure-amended soil showed significantly higher DW yields, improved nutritive status and higher total Ni phytoextracted. Some bacterial inoculants enhanced Ni removal due to the stimulation in growth and/or increase in shoot Ni concentration but this depended on the plant species, soil type and inoculant. Pseudoarthrobacter oxydans strain SBA82 enhanced shoot DW yield of all three Odontarrhena spp. in at least one soil type. Paenarthrobacter sp. strain LA44 and Stenotrophomonas sp. strain MA98 promoted growth of O. serpyllifolia and O. bracteata. Inoculated plants showing growth promotion presented lower activities of antioxidative enzymes, and concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA) and H2O2, indicating a protective effect of these inoculants on the plants.

Conclusion

Rhizobacterial inoculants applied in combination with manure can improve plant growth and health, and Ni phytoextraction, in some hyperaccumulating Odontarrhena spp.

The neuropathogenesis of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) may manifest as various neurocognitive impairments (NCI). HIV-positive individuals also have significantly shorter telomere length (TL) in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and CD8+ T cells compared to HIV-negative individuals. Additionally, reduced TL has been found to be associated with chronic psychological stress. This study focused on the effects of HIV-infection and chronic stress associated with childhood trauma on telomere length, and investigated whether leukocyte TL (LTL), in particular, represents a risk factor for NCI. Eighty-three HIV-positive and 45 HIV-negative women were assessed for childhood trauma and were subjected to detailed neurocognitive testing. Blood from each participant was used to extract Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). Relative LTL were determined by performing real time quantitative PCR reactions as described by Cawthon et al. (2002). As expected, relative LTL in the HIV-positive individuals was significantly shorter than that of HIV-negative individuals (F = 51.56, p = <0.01). Notably, a significant positive correlation was evident between relative LTL and learning performance in the HIV-positive group. In addition, a significant negative correlation was observed between relative LTL and verbal fluency, but this association was only evident in HIV-positive individuals who had experienced trauma. Our results suggest that reduced LTL is associated with worse learning performance in HIV-positive individuals, indicating that TL could act as a susceptibility factor in increasing neurocognitive decline in HIV-infected individuals.  相似文献

Like many Eastern U.S. salt marshes, East Harbor salt marsh lagoon on Cape Cod was isolated from tidal flow in the 1800s, resulting in near‐freshwater conditions and loss of native salt marsh species. After its partial restoration in 2002, a variety of marine and estuarine fauna recolonized East Harbor, and soft shell clam (Mya arenaria) recolonization was particularly prolific. The goal of our study was to evaluate molluscan community composition, density, and distribution at regular intervals for 10 years following restoration, and to relate molluscan community recovery to various physical properties at the site. In 2007, 2008, and 2011, we sampled mollusks at several points across East Harbor, and we also recorded water salinity and temperature, particle size distribution, and submerged aquatic vegetation density. In 2007 and 2008, we encountered 12 and 11 mollusk species, respectively; M. arenaria was the most abundant species in 2007 and the second most abundant species in 2008. In 2011, we encountered eight mollusk species and M. arenaria was the most abundant species. Mollusk species richness declined from 12 to 8 species between 2008 and 2011. Our results show that mollusk species richness and density have declined significantly since the first few years following restoration; related studies attribute this to high summer water temperatures in the Main Lagoon and severe macroalgal blooms during 2005–2006. This suggests that East Harbor is still equilibrating to baseline conditions and that full tidal restoration may be necessary to sustain a diverse mollusk community at East Harbor.  相似文献

Interannual dynamics of aerial and arboreal green spruce aphid populations   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Partial defoliation of spruce by the green spruce aphid Elatobium abietinum (Walker) is a recurrent event in European and, increasingly, North American forests. The patterns of insect abundance on trees have never been satisfactorily described by a numerical model despite considerable knowledge of endogenous and exogenous factors in the population dynamics of the species. Long-term field population estimates of the aphid on foliage provided the opportunity to evaluate such a model. Unlike comparable models for tree-dwelling aphids, this was also applicable to almost completely independent aphid field data derived from the Rothamsted Insect Survey’s nationwide network of suction traps. Although based on relatively few parameters, the model was robust in its predictions of alate aphids geographically remote from the forest in which the original population was estimated. The population maximum, which causes the greatest forest damage, is reached in early summer and can be predicted from knowledge of winter temperature (chill bouts), spring temperature (thermal sum), and interannual negative feedback (density dependence). The model provides confirmation that alate populations of spruce aphids, upon which a number of other extensive studies have been based, are ultimately influenced by similar endogenous and climatic factors and that they are a reasonable proxy for aphids on trees.  相似文献

Gastrin regulates ECL cell histamine release and is a critical determinant of acid secretion. ECL cell secretion and proliferation is inhibited by gastrin antagonists and somatostatin but little is known about the role of dopamine agonists in this process. Since the ECL cell exhibits all three classes of receptor we evaluated and compared the effects of the gastrin receptor antagonist, (YF476), lanreotide (SST agonist) and novel dopaminergic agents (BIM53061 and BIM27A760) on ECL cell histamine secretion and proliferation. Highly enriched (>98%) ECL cell preparations prepared from rat gastric mucosa using a FACS approach were studied. Real-time PCR confirmed presence of the CCK2, SS2 and SS5 and D1 receptors on ECL cells. YF476 inhibited histamine secretion and proliferation with IC(50)s of 1.25 nM and 1.3 x 10(-11) M respectively, values 10-1000x more potent than L365,260. Lanreotide inhibited secretion and proliferation (2.2 nM, 1.9 x 10(-10) M) and increased YF476-inhibited proliferation a further 5-fold. The dopamine agonist, BIM53061, inhibited gastrin-mediated ECL cell secretion and proliferation (17 nM, 6 x 10(-10) M) as did the novel dopamine/somatostatin chimera BIM23A760 (22 nM, 4.9 x 10(-10) M). Our studies demonstrate that the gastrin receptor antagonist, YF476, is the most potent inhibitor of ECL cell histamine secretion and proliferation. Lanreotide, a dopamine agonist and a dopamine/somatostatin chimera inhibited ECL cell function but were 10-1000x less potent than YF476. Agents that selectively target the CCK2 receptor may provide alternative therapeutic strategies for gastrin-mediated gastrointestinal cell secretion and proliferation such as evident in the hypergastrinemic gastric carcinoids associated with low acid states.  相似文献

An attempt has been made to determine where in the lower brainstem the cell bodies of nonsympathetic efferent fibres in the aortic nerve of the cat and rabbit are located. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was placed on the central end of the right cut aortic nerve of anaesthetized animals and, after an appropriate time, sections of the brainstem encompassing the rostral and caudal limits of the dorsal vagal motor nucleus and nucleus ambiguus were examined microscopically for retrogradely transported HRP. Cell bodies labelled by exogenous HRP were not found in any of the cats or rabbits exposed to HRP although reaction product, due to an endogenous response, was observed. Appropriate control experiments were performed to show that the sensitivity of the technique for demonstrating HRP in our hand was adequate. We conclude that the cell bodies of efferent fibres, of non sympathetic origin, in the aortic nerve are likely to be located outside the central nervous system.  相似文献

Following antennal contact with the honeydew of the black scale (Saissetia oleae Olivier), female adult green lacewings (Chrysoperla carnea Stephens) showed a reduced mean walking speed (inverse orthokinesis), an increased mean turning frequency (positive klinokinesis), and an increased mean turning angle. Similar, but generally less pronounced, behavioural changes occurred after contact with solutions of acid hydrolysed L-tryptophan and water. Reduced walking speed, lower mean turning frequency and increased mean turning angle were also observed in insects exposed to honeydew during the period prior to antennal contact with the honeydew. The observed alterations in behaviour in response to honeydew could increase the likelihood of both honeydew and prey being located in the field.
Résumé A la suite d'un contact antennaire avec le miellat de la cochenille noire (Saissetia oleae), les femelles adultes deChrysoperla carnea Stephens présentent une vitesse de déplacement moyenne réduite (orthokinèse inverse), une fréquence de changement de direction moyenne accrue (klinokinèse positive), et une augmentation de l'angle de changement de direction moyen. De manière similaire mais généralement moins accentuée, des changements de comportement se manifestent après contact avec des solutions de L-triptophane hydrolysé en milieu acide. Une vitesse de déplacement réduite, une fréquence moyenne de changement de direction plus faible et un angle de changement de direction moyen en augmentation sont également observés chez les insectes exposés au miellat durant la période précédant un contact antennaire avec le miellat. Les altérations de comportement observées en réponse au miellat pourrait allonger la vie à la fois du miellat et de la proie dans la nature.
