Capsule: Grazing by livestock can have complex effects on drivers of population change in the Clamorous Reed Warbler Acrocephalus stentoreus and Dead Sea Sparrow Passer moabiticus.

Aims: To investigate the effect on two specialist bird species on wetland degradation in the Jordan Valley.

Methods: The direct and indirect effects of grazing on the probability of occurrences of two specialist bird species, Clamorous Reed Warbler A. stentoreus and Dead Sea Sparrow P. moabiticus, were analysed during the breeding season at the patch scale, using path analysis.

Results: Tamarix shrub density was a strong predictor for the presence of both species. Grazing had a negative total effect on both; a significant indirect effect on Dead Sea Sparrow via its impact on the mean height of shrubs, and a significant, negative indirect effect on Clamorous Reed Warbler by reducing reed cover. Intensive grazing and browsing by livestock including goats, sheep and camels, apparently had a negative effect on the overall density of native Tamarix shrubs, while promoting encroachment by invasive Prosopis juliflora.

Conclusion: This may be part of a long-term cascade leading to an ecological transition and loss of important wetland habitats in the arid Jordan Valley.  相似文献

In this work, an overview of the biosimilars market, pipeline and industry targets is discussed. Biosimilars typically have a shorter timeline for approval (8 years) compared to 12 years for innovator drugs and the development cost can be 10–20% of the innovator drug. The biosimilar pipeline is reviewed as well as the quality management system (QMS) that is needed to generate traceable, trackable data sets. One difference between developing a biosimilar compared to an originator is that a broader analytical foundation is required for biosimilars and advances made in developing analytical similarity to characterize these products are discussed. An example is presented on the decisions and considerations explored in the development of a biosimilar and includes identification of the best process parameters and methods based on cost, time, and titer. Finally factors to consider in the manufacture of a biosimilar and approaches used to achieve the target-directed development of a biosimilar are discussed.

We have developed a somatic cell gene delivery mouse model of melanoma that allows for the rapid validation of genetic alterations identified in this disease. A major advantage of this system is the ability to model the multi-step process of carcinogenesis in immune-competent mice without the generation and cross breeding of multiple strains. We have used this model to evaluate the role of RAS isoforms in melanoma initiation in the context of conditional Ink4a/Arf loss. Mice expressing the tumor virus A (TVA) receptor specifically in melanocytes under control of the dopachrome tautomerase (DCT) promoter were crossed to Ink4a/Arflox/lox mice and newborn DCT-TVA/Ink4a/Arflox/lox mice were injected with retroviruses containing activated KRAS, NRAS and/or Cre-recombinase. No mice injected with viruses containing KRAS and Cre or NRAS alone developed tumors; however, more than one-third of DCT-TVA/Ink4a/Arflox/lox mice injected with NRAS and Cre viruses developed melanoma and two-thirds developed melanoma when NRAS and Cre expression was linked.  相似文献

The essential oils (EOs) isolated from the fresh aerial parts of Ruta chalepensis L. collected in North Lebanon were obtained by solvent‐free microwave extraction (Milestone®), yielding 0.12% EO from both the leaves and a mixture of stems and leaves. The EOs were characterized by GC/MS analysis, and 27 components were identified, which were primarily ketones (88.0–93.2%). The main components were nonan‐2‐one and undecan‐2‐one. The antimicrobial activity of the EOs against a Gram‐positive and a Gram‐negative bacterium, a yeast, and a dermatophyte was evaluated using the broth‐microdilution technique and expressed as minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC). The EOs revealed moderate in vitro antifungal activity against Trichophyton rubrum and Candida albicans.  相似文献

The nascent short strands (4 S) isolated from replicating Simian, virus 40 DNA hybridize specifically with denatured SV40 DNA and self-anneal extensively (70 to 92%) when incubated at 68 °C in 1 m-NaCl. Since complementary genetic sequences are present in the 4 S strands, both growing chains of SV40 DNA appear to be synthesized discontinuously at each replication fork.  相似文献
