Aggregation and species coexistence in fleas parasitic on small mammals   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The aggregation model of coexistence states that species coexistence is facilitated if interspecific aggregation is reduced relative to intraspecific aggregation. We investigated the relationship between intraspecific and interspecific aggregation in 17 component communities (the flea assemblage of a host population) of fleas parasitic on small mammals and hypothesized that interspecific interactions should be reduced relative to intraspecific interactions, facilitating species coexistence. We predicted that the reduction of the level of interspecific aggregation in relation to the level of intraspecific aggregation would be positively correlated with total flea abundance and species richness of flea assemblages. We also expected that the higher degree of facilitation of flea coexistence would be affected by host parameters such as body mass, basal metabolic rate (BMR) and depth and complexity of burrows. Results of this study supported the aggregation model of coexistence and demonstrated that, in general, a) conspecific fleas were aggregated across their hosts; b) flea assemblages were not dominated by negative interspecific interactions; and c) the level of interspecific aggregation in flea assemblages was reduced in relation to the level of intraspecific aggregation. Intraspecific aggregation tended to be correlated positively to body mass, burrow complexity and mass-independent BMR of a host. Positive interspecific associations of fleas tended to occur more frequently in species-rich flea assemblages and/or in larger hosts possessing deep complex burrows. Intraspecific aggregation increased relative to interspecific aggregation when species richness of flea infracommunities (the flea assemblage of a host individual) and component communities increased. We conclude that the pattern of flea coexistence is related both to the structure of flea communities and affinities of host species.  相似文献

Different host species harbour parasite faunas that are anywhere from very similar to very different in species composition. A priori, the similarity in the parasite faunas of any two host species should decrease with increases in either the phylogenetic distance, the distinctness of the environments occupied or the geographical distance between these hosts. We tested these predictions using extensive data on the faunas of fleas (Insecta: Siphonaptera) and gamasid mites (Acari: Parasitiformes) parasitic on rodents across the Palaearctic. For each pair of host species, we computed the similarity in parasite faunas based on both species composition as well as the phylogenetic and/or taxonomic distinctness of parasite species. Phylogenetic distances between hosts were based on patristic distances through a rodent phylogeny, geographic distances were computed from geographic range data, and environmental dissimilarity was measured from the average climatic and vegetation scores of each host range. Using multiple regressions on distance matrices to assess the separate explanatory power of each of the three dependent variables, environmental dissimilarity between the ranges of host species emerged as the best predictor of dissimilarity between parasite faunas, especially for fleas; in the case of mites, phylogenetic distance between host species was also important. A closer look at the data indicates that the flea and mite faunas of two hosts inhabiting different environments are always different, whilst hosts living in similar environments can have either very similar or dissimilar parasite faunas. Additional tests showed that dissimilarity in flea or mite faunas between host geographic ranges was best explained by dissimilarity in vegetation, followed by dissimilarity in climatic conditions. Thus, external environmental factors may play greater roles than commonly thought in the evolution of host-parasite associations.  相似文献

Background

Parasites can cause energetically costly behavioural and immunological responses which potentially can reduce host fitness. However, although most laboratory studies indicate that the metabolic rate of the host increases with parasite infestation, this has never been shown in free-living host populations. In fact, studies thus far have shown no effect of parasitism on field metabolic rate (FMR).

Methodology and Results

We tested the effect of parasites on the energy expenditure of a host by measuring FMR using doubly-labelled water in free-living Baluchistan gerbils (Gerbillus nanus) infested by naturally occurring fleas during winter, spring and summer. We showed for the first time that FMR of free-living G. nanus was significantly and positively correlated with parasite load in spring when parasite load was highest; this relationship approached significance in summer when parasite load was lowest but was insignificant in winter. Among seasons, winter FMRs were highest and summer FMRs were lowest in G. nanus.

Discussion

The lack of parasite effect on FMR in winter could be related to the fact that FMR rates were highest among seasons. In this season, thermoregulatory costs are high which may indicate that less energy could be allocated to defend against parasites or to compensate for other costly activities. The question about the cost of parasitism in nature is now one of the major themes in ecological physiology. Our study supports the hypothesis that parasites can elevate FMR of their hosts, at least under certain conditions. However, the effect is complex and factors such as season and parasite load are involved.  相似文献

The effect of anti-microtubular herbicide oryzalin (10 μM, 2–4 days) on the root ultrastructure and respiration in two cultivars of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) contrasting in their frost-tolerance was studied during plant cold hardening (3°C, 3 days). The sensitivity of subcellular structures to oryzalin depended closely on cell metabolic activity and the extent of development of the cortical microtubule (MT) network. Most pronounced oryzalin-induced changes were related to enhanced cell vacuolation and the appearance of some signs of apoptosis (as judged from cytoplasm fragmentation) in some cells. In the root zone examined, cell heterogeneity increased, when, along with normally functioning cells, dramatically damaged and even completely destroyed cells appeared. Simultaneously, the activity of cyanide-resistant nonphosphorylating respiration pathway was activated, especially during cold hardening. In hardened cells, single cortical microtubules appeared in both wheat cultivars; this fact indicates that new cold-resistant subpopulations of MT were resistant to depolymerizing action of oryzalin.  相似文献

Immunocompetence, the general capacity of an individual host to mount an immune response against pathogens, is commonly assessed by the response to a challenge of the immune system by injection of phytohaemagglutinin (PHA). The response to PHA is commonly considered a reliable estimate of the T-cell mediated immune response. We investigated the temporal pattern of the PHA response in 10 rodent species from the Negev desert, Israel. We hypothesized that the temporal dynamics of the PHA response would differ among species with different natural patterns of flea parasitism. We injected PHA subcutaneously in the footpad of each rodent and measured its PHA response 6, 24 and 48 h after injection. Rodent species showed two types of PHA response. One type was rapid and characteristic of rodents that had either species-poor flea assemblages, or that are rarely attacked by fleas. This response peaked approximately 6 h after PHA injection. The second type of response was delayed and was typical of rodents that have either species-rich flea assemblages or high abundance and prevalence of fleas or both. Their response to PHA peaked 24 h after injection. Furthermore, rodents that responded promptly had a lower maximum response than rodents with a delayed response. Our results suggest the occurrence of a trade-off between intensity and latency of the PHA response and, therefore, the necessity to account for the relationship between maximum PHA response and time after injection when making interspecific comparisons of immunocompetence.  相似文献

Three cats were subjected to appetitive instrumental conditioning to light by the method of the "active choice" of the reinforcement quality. The short-delayed conditioned bar-pressings were reinforced by bread-meat mixture and the delayed response by meat. The animals differed in behavior strategy: two animals preferred bar-pressing with long delay (the so-called "self-control" group) and one animal preferred bar-pressing with short delay (the so-called "impulsive" group). The multiunit activity of the basolateral amygdala and nucleus lateralis of the hypothalamus was recorded through chronically implanted nichrome wire semimicroelecrodes. The interactions between the neighboring neurons in the lateral hypothalamus and basolateral amygdala (within the local neuronal network) and between the neurons of the basolateral amygdala and lateral hypothalamus (distributed neuronal networks in the direction amygdala--hypothalamus and vice versa) were evaluated by means of statistical crosscorrelation analysis of spike trains. The crosscorrelational interneuronal connections in the delay range of 0-100 ms were examined. It was shown that the number of crosscorrelations between the discharges on neurons both in the local networks of basolateral amygdala and distributed networks was significantly higher in "impulsive" cats. In both groups of animals, the percentage of crosscorrelations between neighbouring neurons in the local networks of the lateral hypothalamus was similar. We suggest that the local networks of the basolateral amygdala and amygdalar-hypothalamic distributed neuronal networks are involved in the system of brain structures which determine the individual features of animal behavior.  相似文献

An evaluation of microbial DNA pools was performed using direct quantitative isolation of DNA from contemporary soils of Southern Urals and paleosols sealed under burial mounds of early Bronze Age more than 5000 years B.P. Significant regression dependence was found between the biomass and DNA contents in these soils (R2 = 0.97). Activity and dominant ecological strategies of microbial communities of paleosols and contemporary southern black soil were compared from growth parameters obtained by analysis of respiratory curves. The ratio of maximum specific growth rates of soil microorganisms on glucose and on yeast extract was shown to provide an auxotrophy index for soil microbial communities.  相似文献

Cold acclimation was followed in three cultivars of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) that differ in freezing tolerance, using root growth as the indicator. During acclimation (followed through 7 d at 4 degrees C), growth rate progressively recovered. The recovery was fast in the tolerant, slow in the sensitive cultivars. The development of freezing tolerance was followed by a challenging cold shock administered after various time intervals of acclimation. Acclimation proceeded faster in the tolerant cultivars. Microtubules were monitored during the acclimation period. A rapid, but transient partial disassembly in the tolerant cultivars preceded the formation of cold-stable microtubules and the recovery of growth rate. In contrast, this transient disassembly was absent in the sensitive cultivar. When a transient disassembly was artificially generated by a pulse-treatment with the antimicrotubular herbicide pronamide, this could induce freezing tolerance. The appearance of cold-stable microtubules was accompanied by a reduced abundance of type TUA1/2 alpha-tubulin isotypes. These findings are discussed with respect to a role of microtubule disassembly in the sensing of low-temperature stress.  相似文献

In human milk we previously found catalytic antibodies (abzymes) catalyzing hydrolysis of DNA, RNA, NMP, NDP, and NTP and also phosphorylation of proteins and lipids. In the present study we have analyzed nuclease activities of antibodies in blood of women during pregnancy and lactation. Blood of healthy male and female volunteers lacked catalytically active antibodies, whereas antibodies from blood of pregnant women hydrolyzed DNA and RNA and their relative activity varied over a wide range. Relative blood abzyme activities significantly increased after delivery and at the beginning of lactation. The highest abzyme activity was observed in blood of parturient women. Although the dynamics of changes in antibody DNase activity during pregnancy was rather individual for each woman, there was a common trend in the increase in antibody activity in the first and/or third trimester of the pregnancy. The DNase activity of IgG and IgM from blood of healthy pregnant women was 4-5 times less than that from pregnant women with pronounced autoimmune thyroiditis.  相似文献

The effects of exogenous abscisic acid (ABA), low temperature, and seedling age on the content of tubulin, actin, and phosphorylated proteins and the structural organization of microtubules (MTs) in cells of different tissues and organs of winter wheat cultivars contrasting in cold hardiness were studied by immunocytochemical methods using monoclonal (against - and -tubulin and actin) and polyclonal (phosphothreonine) antibodies. The leaves and roots of five- and nine- day-old seedlings of three cultivars were characterized by unequal proportion of actin/tubulin proteins. ABA decreased the content of the cytoskeleton and the 60-kD phosphorylated proteins, thus promoting a decrease in the number of MTs and occurrence of a less branched network of weakly fluorescent tubulin components in the cells of the root differentiating zone (which is most responsible for the development of cold hardiness in wheat). Although the cold acclimation of plants (3°C, 7 days) did not change the level of tubulin and actin proteins, it evoked the spatial aggregation of MT, leading to formation of a dense network of tubulin cytoskeleton comprised of thick bundles of intensively fluorescent MTs. In the case of a combined action of the studied factors, low temperatures abolished the hormone effect described above, evoking an increase in the content of the cytoskeletal and 60-kD phosphorylated proteins and MT structures. We suggest that the ABA-induced decrease in the levels of proteins and MTs occurs at the initial stages of plant cold acclimation (3°C, 2-3 days). It may be the signal that triggers the processes of low-temperature adaptation. As the duration of cold acclimation increased (3°C, 7 days), the role of ABA in the formation of plant tolerance decreased. Apparently, in this case other hormone-independent mechanisms of frost hardiness development are triggered, in which the role of the cytoskeleton components and cytoskeleton-associated proteins increases.  相似文献
