Biotic and abiotic stressors impose various fitness costs on individuals across a variety of taxa. In vertebrates, these stressors typically trigger complex neuroendocrine responses that stimulate glucocorticoid (GC) secretion from the adrenal cortex. Short-term elevation of GCs can be adaptive as it shifts energy toward physiological processes that cope with acute stressors; however, chronic increases in GC levels could have detrimental effects on fitness. Parasitism can be considered an important biotic stressor in nature and a possible cause of reproductive failure that could substantially affect an individual’s fitness. Thus, we aimed to test the effects of parasitism and maternal stress, as measured by GCs, during pregnancy and the relationship between these variables and measures of reproductive output using a rodent-flea system. Female Egyptian spiny mice (Acomys cahirinus) were randomly assigned to flea (Parapulex chephrenis) infested or uninfested treatments before and during pregnancy. The offspring of these females were flea-free. Feces were collected at five time points during the experiment to determine maternal fecal glucocorticoid metabolite (FGCM) concentrations. Overall, infested females had lower FGCM levels during gestation but higher FGCM levels post-parturition and larger mass changes than uninfested females. Additionally, models related to pup quality and quantity often included some measure of maternal investment or body condition moderating relationships between infestation and stress. This suggests that flea parasitism or high GC levels alone might not significantly impact host reproduction but rather females can experience different effects depending on their level of investment, which could be limited by body condition and/or the number of pups present in a litter. 相似文献

In patients with toxic infections salmonellae were identified in 31% of cases. The patients were divided into two groups: the control group receiving treatment with infusion solutions and the test group treated, in addition to the usual scheme of therapy, with indomethacin in a daily dose of 150 mg. The study revealed that salmonellae isolated at the initial stages of the disease possessed highly pronounced adhesive properties. The adhesive properties of salmonellae isolated at the stage of convalescence from the patients of the test group were considerably less pronounced than those of salmonellae isolated from the same patients at the peak of the disease. The spiny mouse Acomys cahirinus produces well-developed pups although it is a relatively small mammal (45 g). We envisioned two opposing hypotheses on the effect of early weaning on the growth rate of pups. The first predicts little effect since the increase in energy intake of dams above non-reproducing females is relatively low, suggesting that pups consume a large portion of their energy as solid food, and the pups are very well developed at birth. The second predicts a substantial effect since the 'index of precociality', that is the energy intake for maintenance of a pup as a proportion of that predicted for a rodent of its body mass, falls within values for altricial rodents, suggesting an extended maternal dependence of the young. To test these hypotheses, we measured the growth rate and food intake of pups weaned after either 7, 14, 21 or 28 days. Only three of 12 pups weaned after 7 days survived and, consequently, the latter hypothesis was supported. All pups weaned at 14–28 days survived. There was a significant decrease in growth rate during the first day after weaning in pups weaned at 7, 14 and 21 days but not after 28 days, suggesting that pups did not require parental care by day 28. Peak growth rate in pups weaned at 14 days occurred in the second week but occurred in the third week in pups weaned at 21 and 28 days. In spite of these differences, pups in all treatments had similar body mass at 64 days, indicating compensatory growth. We concluded that pups of A. cahirinus are precocial from a morphological aspect in that they are well developed at birth but altricial from a nutritional aspect in that they require extended maternal support. 相似文献

Four cats were subjected to appetitive instrumental conditioning with light as a conditioned stimulus by the method of "active choice" of the reinforcement quality: short-delay conditioned bar-press responses were followed by bread-meat mixture and the delayed responses--by meat. The animals differed in behavior strategy: four animals preferred bar-pressing with long delay (so called "self-control" group); two animal preferred bar-pressing with short-delay (so called "impulsive" group). Then all the animals were learned to short-delay (1 s) instrumental conditioned reflex to light (CS+) reinforced by meat. The multiunit activity in the frontal cortex and the hippocampus (CA3) was recorded through chronically implanted nichrome-wire semimicroelectrodes. The interactions among the neighboring neurons in the frontal cortex and hippocampus (within the local neuronal networks) and between the neurons of the frontal cortex and hippocampus (distributed neuronal networks of frontal-hippocampal and hippocampal-frontal directions) were evaluated by means of statistical crosscorrelation analysis of the spike trains. Crosscorrelation interneuronal connections in the delay range 0-100 ms were explored. It was shown that the functional organization of the frontal and hippocampal neuronal networks differed in choice behavior and was similar during realization of short-delayed conditioned reflex. We suggest that the local and distributed neural networks of the frontal cortex and hippocampus take part in the realization of cognitive behavior, in particularly in the processes of the decision making. 相似文献

Iron oxide nanoparticles have been shown to magnetically label cells in order to visualize them in vivo via MR imaging. This technology has yet to be implemented in insulin secreting cells, thus it is not known whether the presence of these nanoparticles in the cytoplasm of the cells affects insulin secretion. This study investigates the effectiveness and consequence of labeling mouse insulinoma betaTC3 and betaTC-tet cells with monocrystalline iron oxide nanoparticles (MION). Our data show that MION can be internalized in both betaTC3 and betaTC-tet cells following a 24h exposure to 0.02mg/ml MION solution. The metabolic and secretory activities of both MION-labeled cell lines were statistically indistinguishable from sham treatment. Furthermore, cell viability and apoptosis remained constant throughout the cell's exposure to MION. Finally, MR images demonstrated significant contrast between labeled and sham-treated cells. Thus, labeling murine insulinoma cell lines with magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles does not hinder their insulin secretion, while it provides MR imaging contrast. 相似文献

We hypothesized that sexual and interspecific differences in jumping performance of fleas found in our previous study are correlated with differences in resting metabolic rate (RMR) between sexes and among species. To test this hypothesis, we measured RMR of seven flea species (Xenopsylla conformis mycerini, Xenopsylla ramesis, Xenopsylla dipodilli, Parapulex chephrenis, Synosternus cleopatrae pyramidis, Nosopsyllus iranus theodori and Stenoponia tripectinata medialis). We compared RMR between sexes and among species and examined whether there is intra- and interspecific correlation between RMR and jumping ability. Both mass-specific and mass-independent RMR were the highest in female S. t. medialis, whereas mass-specific RMR was the lowest in male X. dipodilli and mass-independent RMR was the lowest in three Xenopsylla species and P. chephrenis. Mass-specific and mass-independent RMR were significantly higher in females than in males in all fleas except S. t. medialis. Differences in jumping ability between males and females were found to be correlated with sexual differences in mass-specific or mass-independent RMR. Interspecific comparison showed that the length of jump in both male and female fleas was strongly affected by their mass-specific and mass-independent RMR. 相似文献

Fleas Xenopsylla conformis mycerini and Xenopsylla ramesis replace each other on the same rodent host (Meriones crassus) in two habitats that differ in substrate texture (sand and loess-like sediments, respectively). We hypothesized that the substrate is an important factor determining flea distribution and studied survival of larvae, pupae and newly emerged adults as well as the rate of pre-imaginal development of these flea species in sand and loess rearing medium (= substrate). Texture of rearing medium did not affect survival and development rate of eggs in either X. c. mycerini or X. ramesis. Larval survival and the rate of development were both affected by the factor of substrate. Survival of X. c. mycerini larvae was significantly higher in sand than in loess substrate, whereas survival of X. ramesis larvae did not differ in different substrates. Larvae of both species developed faster in sand substrate than in loess substrate. Maximal survival time of X. c. mycerini larvae that died before pupation did not depend on substrate, whereas X. ramesis larvae survived significantly longer in loess than in sand substrate. Most pupae of both species survived successfully on both substrates, but the duration of pupal stages in sand substrate was longer than that in loess substrate in both species. Newly emerged adults of both species survived similar time in both sand and loess substrate. Irrespective of substrate, adult X. c. mycerini survived for a shorter time than did adult X. ramesis. No between-sex within-species differences in survival time of newly emerged adults in sand versus loess substrate were found in X. c. mycerini.
