Export-specific chaperone SecB and translocational ATPase SecA catalyze the cytoplasmic steps of Sec-dependent secretion in Escherichia coli. Their effects on secretion of periplasmic alkaline phosphatase (PhoA) were shown to depend on the N-terminal region of the mature PhoA sequence contained in the PhoA precursor. Amino acid substitutions in the vicinity of the signal peptide (positions +2, +3) not only dramatically inhibited secretion, but also reduced its dependence on SecB and SecA. Immunoprecipitation reported their impaired binding with mutant prePhoA. The results testified that SecB and SecA interact with the mature PhoA region located close to the signal peptide in prePhoA. 相似文献

Anaphylactic response intensity was quantitatively estimated by means of measuring mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR). Damage to intestinal mucosa was studied by means of morphometry. These indices grew in a dose-dependent way along with the amount of administered egg ovalbumin (OVA). We used null models to examine patterns of species co‐occurrences in 59 communities of fleas parasitic on small mammals from 4 biogeographic realms (Afrotropics, Nearctic, Neotropics, and Palaearctic). We compared frequencies of co‐occurrences of flea species across host species with those expected by chance, using a null model approach. We used 4 tests for non‐randomness to identify pairs of species (within a community) that demonstrate significant positive or negative co‐occurrence. The majority of flea communities were non‐randomly assembled. Patterns of flea co‐occurrences on the same host species indicated aggregation but not segregation of flea species (except for the flea community of Madagascar). Although only a small fraction of species pairs were associated significantly (264 of 10, 943 species pairs according to the most liberal criterion), most of these associations were positive (except for 2 negatively associated species pairs). Significantly associated pairs were represented mainly by non‐congeneric species. The degree of non‐randomness of the entire flea community was similar among biogeographic regions, but the strength of pair‐wise association varied geographically, being the highest in the Afrotropics and the lowest in the European region of the Palaearctic. 相似文献

1. The present study investigated whether different components (species replacement and species gains/losses) of compositional and phylogenetic beta diversity of insect ectoparasites responded similarly to environmental and host-associated gradients using a large dataset on distribution of fleas and their rodent hosts in Mongolia. 2. Generalised dissimilarity modelling was applied to investigate whether environmental variables or host dissimilarity was the best predictor of species/lineage replacement and species/lineage gains/losses (= richness difference) components of compositional and phylogenetic flea beta diversity. 3. The total compositional beta diversity of fleas was influenced mainly by the gradient in air temperature and, to a lesser degree, by total host beta diversity, with the former effect being associated with the richness difference component and the latter effect being associated with species replacement component. The total phylogenetic beta diversity of fleas was best explained by the total phylogenetic beta diversity of hosts, with this effect being mainly associated with the lineage replacement component, whereas the lineage richness difference component responded mainly to the temperature gradient. 4. The results of the present indicate that not only multiple beta diversity facets are driven by different factors, but also different components of the same beta diversity facet respond to different environmental (for parasites, including host-associated) gradients. These patterns were masked when only total beta diversity was analysed. 5. This emphasizes the importance of considering the components of insect beta diversity separately. Ignoring the separate components of beta diversity can lead to potentially erroneous inferences about the relative contribution of abiotic and biotic effects on beta diversity. 相似文献

Quaternary aeolian deposits of the Canary Islands contain well‐preserved terrestrial gastropods, providing a suitable setting for assessing the taphonomy and compositional fidelity of their fossil record over ~13 kyr. Nine beds (12, 513 shells) have been analysed in terms of multivariate taphonomic and palaeoecological variables, taxonomic composition, and the stratigraphic and palaeontological context. Shells are affected by carbonate coatings, colour loss and fragmentation. Shell preservation is size‐specific: juveniles are less fragmented and show colour preservation more commonly than adults. In palaeosols, the adult shell density correlates negatively with the proportion of fragmented adults, negatively with the proportion of juveniles, and positively with the proportion of adults with coatings. High bioturbation intensity in palaeosols is associated with low shell fragmentation and high proportion of shells with coatings. These relationships imply that high adult density in palaeosols was driven by an increase in shell production rate (related to a decrease in predation rates on adults and a decrease in juvenile mortality) and a decrease in shell destruction rate (related to an increase in durability enhanced by carbonate precipitation). In dunes, the relationships between taphonomic alteration, shell density and bioturbation are insignificant. However, dune assemblages are characterized by a lower frequency of shells with coatings and higher rates of colour loss, indicating lower shell durability in dunes than in palaeosols. Additionally, non‐random differences in the coating proportion among palaeosols imply substantial temporal variation in the rate of carbonate crust formation, reflecting long‐term changes in bioturbation intensity that covaries positively with shell preservation. Dunes and palaeosols do not differ in species abundances despite differences in the degree of shell alteration, suggesting that both weakly and strongly altered assemblages offer data with a high compositional fidelity. Carbonate‐rich terrestrial deposits originating in arid conditions can enhance the preservation of gastropods and result in fossil assemblages that are suitable for palaeoecological and palaeoenvironmental studies of terrestrial ecosystems. 相似文献

We asked if and how feeding performance of fleas on an auxiliary host is affected by the phylogenetic distance between this host and the principal host of a flea. We investigated the feeding of 2 flea species, Parapulex chephrenis and Xenopsylla ramesis, on a principal (Acomys cahirinus and Meriones crassus, respectively) and 8 auxiliary host species. We predicted that fleas would perform better (higher proportion of fleas would feed and take larger bloodmeals) on (a) a principal rather than an auxiliary host and (b) auxiliary hosts phylogenetically closer to a principal host. Although feeding performance of fleas differed among different hosts, we found that: (1) fleas did not always perform better on a principal host than on an auxiliary host; and (2) flea performance on an auxiliary host was not negatively correlated with phylogenetic distance of this host from the principal host. In some cases, fleas fed better on hosts that were phylogenetically distant from their principal host. We concluded that variation in flea feeding performance among host species results from interplay between (a) inherent species-specific host defence abilities, (b) inherent species-specific flea abilities to withstand host defences and (c) evolutionary tightness of association between a particular host species and a particular flea species. 相似文献

Most herbivorous rodents consume a variety of plants and, when available, select ones low in fiber content. In contrast, the fat sand rat (Psammomys obesus), a diurnal gerbillid rodent that is wholly herbivorous, is able to survive while consuming only the halophytic chenopod Anabasis articulata. We hypothesized that these gerbils are able to digest chenopods efficiently and that fiber digestion contributes substantially to their energy budget. Digestibility of total fibers (NDF), hemicellulose, and cellulose was 51.6%, 66.4%, and 44.0%, respectively. Energy derived from fiber digestion was 211.7 kJ kg(-0.75) d(-1) and resulted mostly from hemicellulose digestion. Average daily metabolic rate was 658.4 kJ kg(-0.75) d(-1), and basal metabolic rate (BMR) was determined to be close to 192.6 kJ kg(-0.75) d(-1). Therefore, fiber digestion provided 32% of maintenance requirements and 110% of BMR requirements, one of the highest values reported thus far for placental mammals. The efficiency of utilization of the chenopod was 0.29, a low value compared to other dietary items. We concluded that A. articulata fulfills all the energy and nutrient requirements of fat sand rats, even though energy yields and efficiency of utilization of its energy is low. 相似文献

Population density is a fundamental property of a species and yet it varies among populations of the same species. The variation comes from the interplay between intrinsic features of a species that tend to produce repeatable density values across all populations of the same species and extrinsic environmental factors that differ among localities and thus tend to produce spatial variation in density. Is inter-population variation in density too large for density to be considered a true species character? We addressed this question using data on abundance (number of parasites per individual host, i.e. equivalent to density) of fleas ectoparasitic on small mammals. The data included samples of 548 flea populations, representing 145 flea species and obtained from 48 different geographical regions. Abundances of the same flea species on the same host species, but in different regions, were more similar to each other than expected by chance, and varied significantly among flea species, with 46% of the variation among samples accounted by differences between flea species. Thus, estimates of abundance are repeatable within the same flea species. The same repeatability was also observed, but to a lesser extent, across flea genera, tribes and subfamilies. Independently of the identity of the flea species, abundance values recorded on the same host species, or in the same geographical region, also showed significant statistical repeatability, though not nearly as strong as that associated with abundance values from the same flea species. There were also no strong indications that regional differences in abiotic variables were an important determinant of variation in abundance of a given flea species on a given host species.
