During olive oil production, large quantities of olive mill wastewater (OMW) are produced. This wastewater material, containing a high level of phenolic compounds, poses a serious environmental problem in almost all Mediterranean countries. Candida tropicalis YMEC14 was used as an extremophile strain to design an aerobic biotreatment process to detoxify OMW and reduce its polluting organic load. The process was enhanced by directing yeast metabolism towards biodegradation pathways using hexadecane as co-metabolite and by immobilizing yeast cells in calcium alginate beads. Under immobilization conditions, C. tropicalis YMEC14 grown at 40 degrees C in OMW supplemented with hexadecane resulted in 69.7%, 69.2% and 55.3% reduction of chemical oxygen demand, monophenols and polyphenols, respectively, after a 24-h fermentation cycle. 相似文献

A 3D‐printing technology and printed 3D lithium‐ion batteries (3D‐printed LIBs) based on LiMn0.21Fe0.79PO4@C (LMFP) nanocrystal cathodes are developed to achieve both ultrahigh rate and high capacity. Coin cells with 3D‐printed cathodes show impressive electrochemical performance: a capacity of 108.45 mAh g?1 at 100 C and a reversible capacity of 150.21 mAh g?1 at 10 C after 1000 cycles. In combination with simulation using a pseudo 2D hidden Markov model and experimental data of 3D‐printed and traditional electrodes, for the first time deep insight into how to achieve the ultrahigh rate performance for a cathode with LMFP nanocrystals is obtained. It is estimated that the Li‐ion diffusion in LMFP nanocrystal is not the rate‐limitation step for the rate to 100 C, however, that the electrolyte diffusion factors, such as solution intrinsic diffusion coefficient, efficiency porosity, and electrode thickness, will dominate ultrahigh rate performance of the cathode. Furthermore, the calculations indicate that the above factors play important roles in the equivalent diffusion coefficient with the electrode beyond a certain thickness, which determines the whole kinetic process in LIBs. This fundamental study should provide helpful guidance for future design of LIBs with superior electrochemical performance. 相似文献

Urban expansion can be seen as the most pervasive human impact on the environment where its high resource use contributes negatively to climate change and resource scarcity crises. Many experts call for decoupling resource use, economic development, and related urban development especially within cities of the Global South. This paper focuses on investigating resource efficiency through the lens of urban metabolism. It investigates current resource flows, through material flow analysis, from source to sink, in two diverse districts in Cairo: a formal district and an informal one, regarding materials (waste) and mobility. Consequently, the paper discusses locally responsive interventions that address local priorities as opposing to citywide one‐size fits all solution. The paper relies on parcel audits, which are embedded in an Urban Metabolism Information System developed by the Ecocity Builders and their partners, through a joint project with Cairo University. The methodology couples crowd‐sourced data, parcel audits, and experts’ knowledge to better understand resource flows based on a bottom‐up approach, given the unavailability of governmental data on the local level. The paper further correlates the perceived quality of life with the actual resource flows. It utilizes fieldwork investigations to argue against the local misconceptions regarding the inefficiency of informal areas/systems versus the higher efficiency of planned areas/systems. The paper concludes by proposing integrated solutions that respond to local needs and resources. It highlights the challenges and lessons of this tailored bottom‐up approach and its applicability in other cities worldwide. 相似文献

This article presents the COVID-19 situation and control measures taken by the Government of Pakistan. Two waves of pandemic are faced globally and similar in the study area. We have investigated the risk management decision in two phases. Primarily, strict lockdown was observed from March 2020 to July 2020 and smart lockdown was enforced from August 2020 to December 2020. It has been studied that during strict lockdown, COVID cases reduced gradually but reopening of institutes and smart lockdown strategy resulted gradual increase in confirmed cases and death rates. During first wave of COVID-19 in Pakistan, a total confirmed number of patients of COVID-19 were 263,496 till 18th of July 2020 with total deaths of 5,568 people and 204,276 recoveries, while total number of COVID-19 patients reached 555,511 till 9th of February 2021 with total deaths of 12,026 people. Province of Sindh was affected badly with total number of 251,434 COVID-19 cases followed by Punjab Province with total number of 161,347 COVID-19 till 9th of February 2020. 相似文献

The present study examined the effect of water extract (200 mg/kg body weight) of Rosmarinus officinalis L. in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats for 21 days. The hepatoprotective effects were investigated in the liver tissues sections. There was a significant increase in serum liver biochemical parameters (aspartate aminotransferase, alanine transaminase, and alkaline phosphatase), accompanied by a significant decrease in the level of total protein and albumin in the STZ-induced rats when compared with that of the normal group. The high-dose treatment group (200 mg/kg body wt) significantly restored the elevated liver function enzymes near to normal. This study revealed that rosemary extracts exerted a hepatoprotective effect. The results indicate that the extract exhibits the protective effect on tissues and prove its potentials as an antidiabetic agent. 相似文献

Abstract The 6-β-arylvinyl-2- and 4-glucosyl-3-thioxo-2,3-dihydro-1,2,4-triazin-5(4H)-ones were synthesized with high selectivity using the recently developed amino protecting group strategy. The structure of these new glucosides was established chemically and spectroscopically. Also, some interesting chemical transformations and rearrangements were observed. 相似文献

Metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is one of the most treatment-resistant malignancies, and patients have a dismal prognosis, with a <10% five-year survival rate. The identification of markers that can predict the potential for metastases will have a great effect in improving patient outcomes. In this study, we used differential proteomics with isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ) labeling and LC-MS/MS analysis to identify proteins that are differentially expressed in metastatic and primary RCC. We identified 1256 non-redundant proteins, and 456 of these were quantified. Further analysis identified 29 proteins that were differentially expressed (12 overexpressed and 17 underexpressed) in metastatic and primary RCC. Dysregulated protein expressions of profilin-1 (Pfn1), 14–3-3 zeta/delta (14–3-3ζ), and galectin-1 (Gal-1) were verified on two independent sets of tissues by means of Western blot and immunohistochemical analysis. Hierarchical clustering analysis showed that the protein expression profile specific for metastatic RCC can distinguish between aggressive and non-aggressive RCC. Pathway analysis showed that dysregulated proteins are involved in cellular processes related to tumor progression and metastasis. Furthermore, preliminary analysis using a small set of tumors showed that increased expression of Pfn1 is associated with poor outcome and is a potential prognostic marker in RCC. In addition, 14–3-3ζ and Gal-1 also showed higher expression in tumors with poor prognosis than in those with good prognosis. Dysregulated proteins in metastatic RCC represent potential prognostic markers for kidney cancer patients, and a greater understanding of their involved biological pathways can serve as the foundation of the development of novel targeted therapies for metastatic RCC.Renal cell carcinoma (RCC)1 is the most common neoplasm of the adult kidney. Worldwide incidence and mortality rates of RCC are rising each decade (1). Seventy-five percent of kidney tumors are of the clear cell (ccRCC) subtype (2). Although modern imaging techniques for abdominal screening have led to increased incidental detection of renal tumors (3), unfortunately ∼25% to 30% of patients still have metastases at presentation. The prognosis with RCC is quite variable. The greatest risk of recurrence following nephrectomy is within the first 3 to 5 years (4). The ability to predict which tumors will metastasize would have a significant effect on patient outcomes, because the likelihood of a favorable response to treatment is greater when the metastatic burden is limited, and surgical resection of a single or limited number of metastases can result in longer survival (5). Furthermore, ∼3% of patients will develop a second primary renal tumor, either synchronous or metachronous. Currently, patient prognosis is assessed based on histological parameters and a multivariate analysis developed at Memorial Sloan Kettering (6), but neither is sufficiently accurate. A more accurate assessment of prognosis is urgently needed to better guide patient management.Although surgery can be curative for localized disease, many patients eventually relapse. Metastatic RCC is one of the most treatment-resistant malignancies, with chemotherapy and radiotherapy having limited effect. The five-year survival rate for metastatic RCC is ≤10% (7). Although there has been much progress in RCC treatment with the new era of antiangiogenic therapy, the majority of patients ultimately suffer a relapse and die from progression of the cancer. A more in-depth understanding of the pathogenesis of metastasis will be a cornerstone in the development of new targeted therapies. A number of prognostic markers have previously been identified based on comparative analysis of primary and metastatic tumors, including C-reactive protein, tetraspanin 7, hypoxia-inducible factor 1 α, phos-S6, U3 small nucleolar ribonucleoprotein protein, carbonic anhydrase IX, and microvascular density (8–14). However, no biomarker has yet had an established clinical role independent of stage (15). Differential protein expression between primary RCC and normal tissues was previously studied (16–18). Also, differential expression between primary and metastatic kidney disease has been investigated at the microRNA level (19, 20). Molecular analyses hold the promise of providing a better understanding of the pathogenesis of kidney cancer (21).In this study, we aimed to elucidate the pathogenesis of RCC metastasis through proteomic analysis and to identify potential prognostic markers for kidney cancer. We performed quantitative proteomic analysis using isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ) labeling and LC-MS/MS to identify proteins that were dysregulated in metastatic RCC relative to primary RCC. Differential expressions of selected biologically interesting proteins—profilin-1 (Pfn1), 14–3-3 zeta/delta (14–3-3ζ), and galectin-1 (Gal-1)—were validated on two independent sets of tumors by means of western blot (WB) analysis and immunohistochemistry (IHC). Hierarchical clustering analysis showed that differential protein expression can distinguish between aggressive and non-aggressive tumors. In order to explore the role of these dysregulated proteins in tumor progression, we performed Gene Ontology (GO) and pathway analyses. In addition, we carried out a preliminary analysis to assess the potential of Pfn1, 14–3-3ζ, and Gal-1 as prognostic markers in RCC. 相似文献

The Pampa biome is considered one of the main hotspots of the world’s biodiversity and it is estimated that half of its original vegetation was removed and converted to agricultural land and tree plantations. Although an increasing amount of knowledge is being assembled regarding the response of soil bacterial communities to land use change, to the associated plant community and to soil properties, our understanding about how these interactions affect the microbial community from the Brazilian Pampa is still poor and incomplete. In this study, we hypothesized that the same soil type from the same geographic region but under distinct land use present dissimilar soil bacterial communities. To test this hypothesis, we assessed the soil bacterial communities from four land-uses within the same soil type by 454-pyrosequencing of 16S rRNA gene and by soil microbial activity analyzes. We found that the same soil type under different land uses harbor similar (but not equal) bacterial communities and the differences were controlled by many microbial taxa. No differences regarding diversity and richness between natural areas and areas under anthropogenic disturbance were detected. However, the measures of microbial activity did not converge with the 16S rRNA data supporting the idea that the coupling between functioning and composition of bacterial communities is not necessarily correlated. 相似文献
