Tilletia indica teliospores were studied by use of thin sections and freeze-etch replicas. Surfaces of these spores have rodlet patterns which differ from those previously reported for spores of other fungi. Some properties of monolayers of (POPG) alone or of POPG in mixtures with (DPPC) have been measured near 35°C during dynamic compression and expansion at 3.6 cm2·s?1. (2) The mean values of minimum surface tension (corresponding to maximum surface pressure) which could be obtained with pure POPG monolayers at high compression ranged from 15 to 18 mN·m?1 in the presence of Na+, Ca2+ or low pH (2.0) in the subphase. (3) The presence of Ca2+ or low pH in the subphase increased the collapse plateau ratios obtained on cyclic compression. This might represent enhanced respreading into the monolayer of pure POPG from a collapsed form during reexpansion of the surface. (4) Monolayers containing 10% or 30% POPG and 90% or 70% DPPC could be compressed to surface tensions approaching zero. (5) In such mixed monolayers, 10% or 30% POPG did not appear to enhance respreading, as measured by collapse plateau ratios, in the presence of Na+ or Ca2+ in the subphase. 相似文献

The activity of the hydrophilic Vibrio sp. strain DW1 and the hydrophobic Pseudomonas sp. strain S9, which both undergo starvation-induced responses, was examined at nutrient-enriched and nutrient-deficient interfaces. The initial period of response to a starvation regime (“dwarfing” phase) is a sequence of two processes: fragmentation and continuous size reduction of the fragmented cells. This dwarfing phase is also one of intense metabolic activity as supported by O2 uptake measurements of the endogenous metabolism and the use of inhibitors of the proton flow, the electron transport chain, and membrane-bound ATPase. Hydrophilic bacteria become even smaller at nutrient-deficient surfaces than in the liquid phase upon starvation, and this is reflected in a higher endogenous metabolism exhibited by surface-associated cells compared with those in the liquid phase. On the other hand, hydrophobic bacteria dwarfing at surfaces did not exhibit a greater size reduction and exhibited an endogenous metabolism that was only slightly higher than that of cells in the liquid phase. Bacterial scavenging of surface-localized nutrients is related to the degree of irreversible binding of dwarf and starved bacteria, which in turn may be related to the degree of cell surface hydrophobicity. 相似文献

Water and osmotic potential energies were measured with thermocouple psychrometers, at intervals during a 4-week period, in growing leaves of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris, var. Blue Lake) and barley (Hordeum vulgare, var. Liberty) plants having roots equally split between 2 differentially salinized nutrient solutions. The osmotic potentials of plants with half their roots in saline solutions were about halfway between the osmotic potentials of plants grown in nonsaline solutions and those grown in saline solutions. By the end of the 4-week measurement period, the beans and barley were almost mature. The final dry weights of shoots of plants with half their roots in saline solutions were about halfway between the dry weights of the shoots of plants grown in nonsaline solutions and the dry weights of those in saline solutions. The results obtained showed that the degree of osmotic adjustment and the rate of growth were functions of the proportion of the root system exposed to saline conditions. 相似文献

Twenty ward stock bottles of aqueous 1% Printol were examined and 17 were found to be contaminated with Alcaligenes faecalis. Organisms were present in dead space behind the plastic liners of the bottle caps, where they could have survived washing. A. faecalis was also isolated from 31 out of 34 1% Printol solutions in use in the hospital. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was grown from two samples of 1% Printol in one ward, but not from stock bottles.The minimal bactericidal concentration (M.B.C.) in aqueous solution of Hycolin, Sudol, and Stericol for A. faecalis and Ps. aeruginosa was 1 in 320. The M.B.C. of Printol for both organisms was 1 in 80. The activity of all four disinfectants was reduced in the presence of large amounts of organic matter. Sudol was the least affected. Polyethylene, of which stock bottles were made, did not reduce the activity of the disinfectants. The lungs of three infants, two with bronchiolitis and one with pneumonia, were examined by fluorescent antibody techniques for the distribution of respiratory syncytial (R.S.) virus, and also for the presence of human globulin. In bronchiolitis the lungs contained little virus, whereas in pneumonia virus was abundant and widespread; and, paradoxically, while in bronchiolitis human globulin had the same scanty distribution as virus it was absent in pneumonia. It is suggested that the essential process in bronchiolitis is a widespread type 1 allergic reaction dependent on a second encounter with R.S. virus antigen, whereas in R.S. virus pneumonia the mucosal necrosis and alveolar and interstitial inflammation are the result of direct virus damage to the lungs.
