Coraliomargarita akajimensis Yoon et al. 2007 is the type species of the genus Coraliomargarita. C. akajimensis is an obligately aerobic, Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, non-motile, spherical bacterium that was isolated from seawater surrounding the hard coral Galaxea fascicularis. C. akajimensis is of special interest because of its phylogenetic position in a genomically under-studied area of the bacterial diversity. Here we describe the features of this organism, together with the complete genome sequence, and annotation. This is the first complete genome sequence of a member of the family Puniceicoccaceae. The 3,750,771 bp long genome with its 3,137 protein-coding and 55 RNA genes is a part of the Genomic Encyclopedia of Bacteria and Archaea project. 相似文献

Sulfurospirillum deleyianum Schumacher et al. 1993 is the type species of the genus Sulfurospirillum. S. deleyianum is a model organism for studying sulfur reduction and dissimilatory nitrate reduction as an energy source for growth. Also, it is a prominent model organism for studying the structural and functional characteristics of cytochrome c nitrite reductase. Here, we describe the features of this organism, together with the complete genome sequence and annotation. This is the first completed genome sequence of the genus Sulfurospirillum. The genus Vulcanisaeta is characterized by a global distribution in hot and acidic springs. Arcanobacterium haemolyticum (ex MacLean et al. 1946) Collins et al. 1983 is the type species of the genus Arcanobacterium, which belongs to the family Actinomycetaceae. The strain is of interest because it is an obligate parasite of the pharynx of humans and farm animal; occasionally, it causes pharyngeal or skin lesions. It is a Gram-positive, nonmotile and non-sporulating bacterium. The strain described in this study was isolated from infections amongst American soldiers of certain islands of the North and West Pacific. This is the first completed sequence of a member of the genus Arcanobacterium and the ninth type strain genome from the family Actinomycetaceae. Anti‐fat sentiment is increasing, is prevalent in health professionals, and has health and social consequences. There is no evidence for effective obesity prejudice reduction techniques in health professionals. The present experiment sought to reduce implicit and explicit anti‐fat prejudice in preservice health students. Health promotion/public health bachelor degree program students (n = 159) were randomized to one of three tutorial conditions. One condition presented an obesity curriculum on the controllable reasons for obesity (i.e., diet/exercise). A prejudice reduction condition presented evidence on the uncontrollable reasons for obesity (i.e., genes/environment); whereas a neutral (control) curriculum focused on alcohol use in young people. Measures of implicit and explicit anti‐fat prejudice, beliefs about obese people, and dieting, were taken at baseline and postintervention. Repeated measures analyses showed decreases in two forms of implicit anti‐fat prejudice (decreases of 27 and 12%) in the genes/environment condition relative to other conditions. The diet/exercise condition showed a 27% increase in one measure of implicit anti‐fat prejudice. Reductions in explicit anti‐fat prejudice were also seen in the genes/environment condition (P = 0.006). No significant changes in beliefs about obese people or dieting control beliefs were found across conditions. The present results show that anti‐fat prejudice can be reduced or exacerbated depending on the causal information provided about obesity. The present results have implications for the training of health professionals, especially given their widespread negativity toward overweight and obesity. 相似文献

In susceptible mouse strains, infection of mice with Plasmodium berghei ANKA (PbA) results in a lethal complication, cerebral malaria. Cerebral malaria is due to the immune response induced by the parasite, which results in an increased production of TNF, known to increase the expression of adhesion molecules on the endothelia. To investigate the role of the adhesion molecule ICAM-1 (CD54), we infected wild-type (+/+) and ICAM-1-deficient (-/-) mice with PbA. While +/+ mice died 6-8 days after infection, -/- mice survived > 15 days. Parasitaemia was similar in +/+ and -/- mice. Serum TNF concentration was increased by the infection and was significantly higher in infected +/+ than in -/- mice. However, TNF mRNA levels in spleen, lungs, and brain were elevated in both infected +/+ and -/- mice. For IFN-gamma, serum levels were similar in both groups. A breakdown of the blood-brain barrier was evident in infected +/+ mice only. Interestingly, thrombocytopenia was profound in infected +/+, but practically absent in -/- mice. Moreover, macrophage sequestration was evident in brain venules and lung capillaries of +/+ mice and was significantly less important in the alveolar capillaries of infected -/- mice. In contrast, neutrophil sequestration in the lung was similar in both +/+ and -/- mice. Sequestration of parasitized red blood cells was significantly greater in the alveolar capillaries from +/+ than -/- mice. These results indicate that while the immune response is similar in both +/+ and ICAM-1(-/-) mice, the absence of mortality in ICAM(-/-) mice correlates with a decrease of macrophage and parasitized RBC trapping and a less severe thrombocytopenia. 相似文献

The direct adaptive impact of rituals and other forms of behavior dictated or shaped by culture may be one factor influencing their persistence or lack thereof over time. Given that physical contact is a common means through which transmissible disease is spread, we explored the possibility that levels of normative physical contact would be negatively associated with levels of infectious disease prevalence. We tested this prediction across three domains of such behavior – greetings, romantic kissing, and mortuary rituals – by compiling ethnographic information on normative behavior in traditional cultures and comparing it with epidemiological estimates of pathogen prevalence. We find small but significant negative correlations between pathogen prevalence and both greetings and romantic kissing. Ancillary analyses suggest that these relationships are driven by human-transmitted pathogens. The relationship between pathogen prevalence and mortuary rituals is non-significant. Causal mechanisms that may account for these results, as well as implications and limitations, are discussed. 相似文献
