Thorax and pelvis motion during the golf swing have most frequently been described for male golfers at discrete points during the swing, such as top of backswing (TBS) and ball contact (BC). Less is known about the continual motion and coordination of the thorax and pelvis throughout the downswing for either male or female golfers. The purpose of this study was to present detailed 3D kinematic profiles of thorax and pelvis motion during the downswing, and to determine if differences in kinematics exist between male and female skilled golfers. Thorax and pelvis data were collected from 19 male (26±7 years) and 19 female (25±7 years) skilled golfers (handicap ≤4) using an optical motion analysis system. 3D segment position, orientation and angular velocity were calculated, along with phase plane trajectories and thorax–pelvis separation angles. At BC males had greater pelvis posterior tilt, greater pelvis and thorax lateral tilt to the right, and less pelvis and thorax axial rotation to the left compared to females. Males achieved greater peak thorax and pelvis angular velocity, and angular velocity at BC, in the anterior–posterior and lateral tilt directions. Phase plane trajectories revealed that males and females had similar thorax lateral tilt and anterior–posterior tilt angular velocity–displacement relationships at TBS, yet by BC males had greater tilt angles and velocities compared to females. Collectively, the results suggest that male and female skilled golfers have different kinematics for thorax and pelvis motion, predominantly for lateral and anterior–posterior tilt. What might be considered optimal swing characteristics for male golfers should not be generalized to female golfers.  相似文献

This study aimed to explore commonalities among discrimination, stereotyping, and peer-related social experiences of children of immigrants, and to see if these experiences might relate to children’s school-based well-being. Two age-based cohorts of 294 children and their immigrant parents from Portugal, the Dominican Republic, and Cambodia were interviewed. Person-centered analyses resulted in four unique clusters of children’s social experiences. Notably, children in clusters with positive views of cultural in-group and out-group members also reported positive school-based well-being. Person-centered analyses on parent variables found three clusters based on parents’ ethnic/racial socialization practices. There was no overlap between parent and child clusters, indicating unique profiles between parent socialization and child social experiences within immigrant families. Implications of connections among social experiences and school-based emotional well-being for children of immigrants are discussed.  相似文献

The maintenance of glucose homeostasis within the body is crucial for constant and precise performance of energy balance and is sustained by a number of peripheral organs. Estrogens are known to play a role in the maintenance of glucose homeostasis. Aromatase knockout (ArKO) mice are estrogen-deficient and display symptoms of dysregulated glucose metabolism. We aim to investigate the effects of estrogen ablation and exogenous estrogen administration on glucose homeostasis regulation. Six month-old female wildtype, ArKO, and 17β-estradiol (E2) treated ArKO mice were subjected to whole body tolerance tests, serum examination of estrogen, glucose and insulin, ex-vivo muscle glucose uptake, and insulin signaling pathway analyses. Female ArKO mice display increased body weight, gonadal (omental) adiposity, hyperinsulinemia, and liver triglycerides, which were ameliorated upon estrogen treatment. Tolerance tests revealed that estrogen-deficient ArKO mice were pyruvate intolerant hence reflecting dysregulated hepatic gluconeogenesis. Analyses of skeletal muscle, liver, and adipose tissues supported a hepatic-based glucose dysregulation, with a down-regulation of Akt phosphorylation (a key insulin signaling pathway molecule) in the ArKO liver, which was improved with E2 treatment. Concurrently, estrogen treatment lowered ArKO serum leptin and adiponectin levels and increased inflammatory adipokines such as tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) and interleukin 6 (IL6). Furthermore, estrogen deficiency resulted in the infiltration of CD45 macrophages into gonadal adipose tissues, which cannot be reversed by E2 treatment. This study describes the effects of estrogens on glucose homeostasis in female ArKO mice and highlights a primary phenotype of hepatic glucose dysregulation and a parallel estrogen modified adipokine profile.  相似文献

There has been a recent resurgence of interest in the study of play behavior, marked by much empirical research and theoretical review. These efforts suggest that play may be of greater biological significance than most scientists realize. Here we present a brief synopsis of current play research covering issues of adaptive function, phylogeny, causal mechanisms, and development. Our goal is to selectively highlight contemporary areas of research in which the underlying processes and consequences of play should not be ignored. We elucidate some of the new and burgeoning areas of play research and interpret them from an integrative biological theoretical perspective that highlights areas in need of further experimental, comparative, and field research.  相似文献

Sequencing of the large (>50 kb), low-copy-number (<5 per cell) plasmids that mediate horizontal gene transfer has been hindered by the difficulty and expense of isolating DNA from individual plasmids of this class. We report here that a kit method previously devised for purification of bacterial artificial chromosomes (BACs) can be adapted for effective preparation of individual plasmids up to 220 kb from wild gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. Individual plasmid DNA recovered from less than 10 ml of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus, and Corynebacterium cultures was of sufficient quantity and quality for construction of high-coverage libraries, as shown by sequencing five native plasmids ranging in size from 30 kb to 94 kb. We also report recommendations for vector screening to optimize plasmid sequence assembly, preliminary annotation of novel plasmid genomes, and insights on mobile genetic element biology derived from these sequences. Adaptation of this BAC method for large plasmid isolation removes one major technical hurdle to expanding our knowledge of the natural plasmid gene pool.  相似文献

Enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) is one of the best-studied microbially mediated industrial processes because of its ecological and economic relevance. Despite this, it is not well understood at the metabolic level. Here we present a metagenomic analysis of two lab-scale EBPR sludges dominated by the uncultured bacterium, "Candidatus Accumulibacter phosphatis." The analysis sheds light on several controversies in EBPR metabolic models and provides hypotheses explaining the dominance of A. phosphatis in this habitat, its lifestyle outside EBPR and probable cultivation requirements. Comparison of the same species from different EBPR sludges highlights recent evolutionary dynamics in the A. phosphatis genome that could be linked to mechanisms for environmental adaptation. In spite of an apparent lack of phylogenetic overlap in the flanking communities of the two sludges studied, common functional themes were found, at least one of them complementary to the inferred metabolism of the dominant organism. The present study provides a much needed blueprint for a systems-level understanding of EBPR and illustrates that metagenomics enables detailed, often novel, insights into even well-studied biological systems.  相似文献

A meta-analysis was undertaken reporting on the association between a polymorphism in the Thyroglobulin gene (TG5) and marbling in beef cattle. A Bayesian hierarchical model was adopted, with alternative representations assessed through sensitivity analysis. Based on the overall posterior means and posterior probabilities, there is substantial support for an additive association between the TG5 marker and marbling. The marker effect was also assessed across various breed groups, with each group displaying a high probability of positive association between the T allele and marbling. We examined feather molt progress of northern fulmars (Fulmarus glacialis) at Cape Vera in the Canadian High Arctic through opportunistic observation of individuals in flight from 2003 to 2006, and examination of bodies and wings of 127 individuals collected at the site, from 2003 to 2005. We found no evidence suggesting that fulmars shed primary feathers during breeding. Prebasic molt was initiated in the head, neck, sides, belly and back approximately 1 week before hatch. We failed to detect a sex effect on molt progress, but molt among breeders was delayed compared to molt in non- or failed breeders. This study constitutes a baseline we feel may be useful to: (1) researchers interested in feather replacement chronology, wherein feathers are used as sources of biological information; and (2) researchers interested in eventual assessment of relationships among large-scale environmental processes and molt progress in this species, especially in light of predicted changes to Arctic regions.  相似文献

A family of six insulin-like growth factor (IGF) binding proteins (IGFBP-1-6) binds IGF-I and IGF-II with high affinity and thus regulates their bioavailability and biological functions. IGFBPs consist of N- and C-terminal domains, which are highly conserved and cysteine-rich, joined by a variable linker domain. The role of the C-domain in IGF binding is not completely understood in that C-domain fragments have very low or even undetectable IGF binding affinity, but loss of the C-domain dramatically disrupts IGF binding by IGFBPs. We recently reported the solution structure and backbone dynamics of the C-domain of IGFBP-2 (C-BP-2) and identified a pH-dependent heparin binding site [Kuang, Z., Yao, S., Keizer, D. W., Wang, C. C., Bach, L. A., Forbes, B. E., Wallace, J. C., and Norton, R. S. (2006) Structure, dynamics and heparin binding of the C-terminal domain of insulin-like growth factor-binding protein-2 (IGFBP-2), J. Mol. Biol. 364, 690-704]. Here, we have analyzed the molecular interactions among the N-domain of IGFBP-2 (N-BP-2), C-BP-2, and IGFs using cross-linking and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The binding of C-BP-2 to the IGF-I.N-BP-2 binary complex was significantly stronger than the binding of C-BP-2 to IGF-I alone, switching from intermediate exchange to slow exchange on the NMR time scale. A conformational change or stabilization of the IGF-I Phe49-Leu54 region and the Phe49 aromatic ring upon binding to the N-domains, as well as an interdomain interaction between N-BP-2 and C-BP-2 (which is also detectable in the absence of ligand), may contribute to this cooperativity in IGF binding. Glycosaminoglycan binding by IGFBPs can affect their IGF binding although the effects appear to differ among different IGFBPs; here, we found that heparin bound to the IGF-I.N-BP-2.C-BP-2 ternary complex, but did not cause it to dissociate.  相似文献

We report reference‐quality genome assemblies and annotations for two accessions of soybean (Glycine max) and for one accession of Glycine soja, the closest wild relative of G. max. The G. max assemblies provided are for widely used US cultivars: the northern line Williams 82 (Wm82) and the southern line Lee. The Wm82 assembly improves the prior published assembly, and the Lee and G. soja assemblies are new for these accessions. Comparisons among the three accessions show generally high structural conservation, but nucleotide difference of 1.7 single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (snps) per kb between Wm82 and Lee, and 4.7 snps per kb between these lines and G. soja. snp distributions and comparisons with genotypes of the Lee and Wm82 parents highlight patterns of introgression and haplotype structure. Comparisons against the US germplasm collection show placement of the sequenced accessions relative to global soybean diversity. Analysis of a pan‐gene collection shows generally high conservation, with variation occurring primarily in genomically clustered gene families. We found approximately 40–42 inversions per chromosome between either Lee or Wm82v4 and G. soja, and approximately 32 inversions per chromosome between Wm82 and Lee. We also investigated five domestication loci. For each locus, we found two different alleles with functional differences between G. soja and the two domesticated accessions. The genome assemblies for multiple cultivated accessions and for the closest wild ancestor of soybean provides a valuable set of resources for identifying causal variants that underlie traits for the domestication and improvement of soybean, serving as a basis for future research and crop improvement efforts for this important crop species.  相似文献
