Congenital absence of flexor pollicis longus without hypoplasia of thenar muscles

A 7-year-old girl who was unable to flex her left thumb at the interphalangeal joint proved to have an extremely hypoplastic flexor pollicis longus with normal thenar muscles, which is very rare. The flexor digitorum superficialis of the ring finger was transferred to the inserting portion of the flexor pollicis longus tendon with good results. The patient's cooperation seems to be a factor determining the prognosis.     

Graphics of RNA secondary structure; towards an object-oriented algorithm

We present a new algorithm for the display of RNA secondarystructure. The principle of the algorithm is entirely differentfrom those currently in use in that our algorithm is ‘objectoriented’ while currrent algorithms are ‘procedural’.The circular RNA molecule of chrysanthemum stunt viroid wasused as input data for demonstrating the operation of the program.The major interest of this method will be found in its potentialuse in simulation graphics of RNA folding processes. Characterization of a new fetal hemoglobin variant, Hb F Izumi A gamma 6Glu replaced by Gly, by molecular secondary ion mass spectrometry

Molecular secondary ion mass spectrometry has characterized the structure of a new fetal hemoglobin variant, Hb F Izumi, without separation of peptides or amino acid analysis. First, the mass spectrum of a tryptic digest of the abnormal gamma globin revealed a decreased by 72 mass units in the molecular mass of peptide T-1,2, indicating the presence of a Glu leads to Gly substitution. Next, the analysis of the digest produced by the addition of staphylococcal protease, which specifically cleaves glutamyl peptide bonds, determined the site of substitution at 6th glutamic acid residue in peptide T-1,2 which contains two glutamic acid residues. Since this mass spectrometric approach provides digitalized data on peptide analysis, we call it 'digit printing'. The high sensitivity of this technique is especially promising for the analysis of molecular abnormality in various genetic disorders.     

Modification of batroxobin with activated polyethylene glycol: reduction of binding ability towards anti-batroxobin antibody and retention of defibrinogenation activity in circulation of preimmunized dogs

Amino groups of batroxobin (Bothrops atrox thrombic protease) were modified with 2,4-bis(O-methoxypolyethylene glycol)-6-chloro-s-triazine (activated PEG2). The modified batroxobin had the reduced binding ability towards anti-batroxobin antibody but retained its enzymic activity in vitro and in vivo. Administration of modified batroxobin in which 29% of the total amino groups in the molecule had been modified, to beagle dogs preimmunized with native batroxobin gave rise to a marked reduction of the fibrinogen level in plasma, accompanied with an increased level of fibrinogen (fibrin) degradation products, FDP. On the other hand, no reduction of fibrinogen level was observed when native batroxobin instead of modified batroxobin was injected to immunized dogs.     

Growth Regulation in Dwarf Barley Coleoptiles by the Minor Cell Wall Components, Galactose and Mannose

Sugar compositions of cell walls of dark-grown coleoptiles from12 barley strains, 11 of which were coleoptilar semi-dwarf strains,were analyzed on days 2 and 3 after germination. Major wallcomponents of the 12 strains were arabinose, xylose, and glucosein hemicellulose and cellulose; minor components were galactoseand mannose. The sugar content of each wall component per unit length wasnot correlated to any growth parameters calculated from a logisticequation simulating coleoptile growth, but the relative contentsof galactose and mannose in relation to the total wall sugarcontent was correlated to the growth rate on day 3 and the growthcontinuing period. These facts suggest that growth of these12 barley strains in the late growth stage is regulated by theminor wall components, galactose and mannose. ¹ Dedicated to the late Professor Joji Ashida. Gibberellin Production in Cultured Cells of Nicotiana tabacum

Endogenous gibberellins (GAs) in several kinds of crown gallcells and cultured cells derived from normal tissue of Nicotianatabacum were systematically analyzed by gas chromatography-selectedion current monitoring (GC-SICM) after chromatographic purifications,and GA₁, GA₉, GA₁₉ and GA₂₀ were identified. Agrobacterium tumefaciens,a pathogen of crown gall, was confirmed not to produce GAs inits culture. We also investigated endogenous GAs of mother plant,tobacco, and found the same kinds of GAs as in cultured cells. ³ Present address: College of Agriculture, Chonnam NationalUniversity, Kwangju 500, Korea. Expression of three forms of thyroid hormone receptor in human tissues

At least two thyroid hormone receptor (hTR) genes are present in humans, but the significance of this multiplicity is unknown. These receptors could have differences in tissue distribution or possess different functions. We studied the distribution and abundance of three hTR mRNAs (hTR beta, hTR alpha 1, and hTR alpha 2) by Northern blot analysis. Three mRNAs were expressed in all tissues examined. hTR beta was strongly expressed in brain and prostate predominantly as a 10.0-kilobase (kb) mRNA. This mRNA was also expressed in thyroid and was much less abundant in liver, kidney, placenta, tonsil, and spleen. hTR alpha 1 is represented by two mRNAs with sizes of 6.0 and 3.2 kb. The 6.0-kb mRNA was constantly less abundant than the 3.2-kb mRNA. hTR alpha 2 was detected as a single mRNA with a size of 3.2 kb, using a probe unique for this mRNA. Both hTR alpha 1 and hTR alpha 2 were strongly expressed in brain, prostate, and thyroid and much less in other tissues. The relative amounts of the three hTR mRNAs were roughly parallel in each tissue. It is of interest that none of these hTRs was abundant in liver, which is the major thyroid hormone-responsive organ. Another hTR may be present in liver.
