  1. Land-use change is a leading driver of biodiversity loss, especially in tropical fresh waters where the conversion of natural forest to monoculture plantations impacts freshwater fish assemblages. The environmental pathways underpinning shifts in fish assemblages, however, are poorly understood, but could potentially be inferred from trait–environment relationships.
  2. We addressed this knowledge gap using eco-morphological traits to explain fish occurrences in oil palm-impacted streams of the Endau drainage in Peninsular Malaysia. We also investigated how traits relate to differences in environmental conditions associated with land-use change. We then integrate findings from the above to test how potential pathways of land-use driven environmental changes can impact species occurrences through effects on life history, feeding habits, and mobility.

Mixed-effects models show that fishes with superior (upward-facing) mouths and low body mass were more likely to occur in oil palm streams than forest streams, and these traits were associated with grass-dominated riparian zones and reduced woody debris in oil palm streams, respectively. Structural equation models show that mouth positions statistically mediated the effect of riparian vegetation on fish species occurrences in oil palm streams. Specifically, fishes with superior mouths were more likely to feed on terrestrial invertebrates.
  4. Our analysis of easily measurable traits revealed pathways of land-use impact that are potentially more widely applicable than conventional taxa-based approaches. Fishes with superior mouths tended to occur in oil palm streams as they were able to more effectively exploit inputs of terrestrial invertebrates that are potentially associated with grass-dominated riparian vegetation.
  5. Moreover, shifts in traits may suggest land-use driven changes in stream ecosystem functioning (e.g. in terms of the role of terrestrial subsidies), thereby informing targeted management actions in land-use impacted habitats (e.g. retention/restoration of riparian trees).

The legs of the primary larva of Mantispa aphavexelte, parasite in egg sacks of spiders, were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), histology and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). The leg morphology is described in detail, including intrinsic muscles. Functional adaptations of the leg attachment devices are discussed, especially regarding the material composition. For example, a sole-like flexible ventral tarsal surface containing resilin is combined with sclerotized pseudo-claws. This likely enables the larvae to cope with surface structures on the spider's body, with substrates on the ground, and also with various structural elements in the spider's nest. The leg morphology is evaluated with respect to phylogenetic affinities. A trumpet-shaped, elongated empodium has likely evolved early in the evolution of Neuroptera and may consequently belong to the groundplan of a large subgroup of the order. It characterizes most groups of the hemerobiform lineage and is also present in the myrmeleontiform Psychopsidae. The presence of a tarsal protrusion resembling a pretarsus confirms the monophyletic origin of Mantispoidea. A single fixed tooth and a specific surface structure are potential autapomorphies of Mantispidae. A distal tibial subunit partly separated from the main part of the leg segment is an apomorphy only described for larvae of M. aphavexelte.  相似文献

The throwaway culture related to the single-use materials such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) has created a major environmental concern. Recycling of PET waste into biodegradable plastic polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) creates an opportunity to improve resource efficiency and contribute to a circular economy. We sequenced the genome of Pseudomonas umsongensis GO16 previously shown to convert PET-derived terephthalic acid (TA) into PHA and performed an in-depth genome analysis. GO16 can degrade a range of aromatic substrates in addition to TA, due to the presence of a catabolic plasmid pENK22. The genetic complement required for the degradation of TA via protocatechuate was identified and its functionality was confirmed by transferring the tph operon into Pseudomonas putida KT2440, which is unable to utilize TA naturally. We also identified the genes involved in ethylene glycol (EG) metabolism, the second PET monomer, and validated the capacity of GO16 to use EG as a sole source of carbon and energy. Moreover, GO16 possesses genes for the synthesis of both medium and short chain length PHA and we have demonstrated the capacity of the strain to convert mixed TA and EG into PHA. The metabolic versatility of GO16 highlights the potential of this organism for biotransformations using PET waste as a feedstock.  相似文献

Recent reports demonstrate that failure of artemisinin-based antimalarial therapies is associated with an altered response of early blood stage Plasmodium falciparum. This has led to increased interest in the use of pulse assays that mimic clinical drug exposure for analysing artemisinin sensitivity of highly synchronised ring stage parasites. We report a methodology for the reliable execution of drug pulse assays and detail a synchronisation strategy that produces well-defined tightly synchronised ring stage cultures in a convenient time-frame.  相似文献
