B-Endorphin (B-END), met-enkepalin (M-ENK), and DAla2NMe5-met-enkephalinamide were administered intracerebroventricularly to rats and effects on the ingestion of a liquid diet were examined. B-END significantly increased food intake in a half-hour test at a dose of 200 ng/rat. Lower or higher doses did not affect food intake. Neither M-ENK or the synthetic enkephalin analog affected ingestion of the liquid diet. These findings demonstrate rapid action of an endorphin on food intake administered at a lower dose than has previously been reported and suggest a specificity for B-END in the endorphinergically mediated hyperphagic response. 相似文献

When rabbit corneal endothelial cells were cultured in excess concentrations of human fibronectin an altered phenotypic expression was observed. Cell appearance was changed radically and collagen synthesis was specifically inhibited in a dose-response fashion. This study provides further evidence that fibronectin may be one of the developmental signals which act a molecular level and is capable of interspecies activity. 相似文献

Luminal fluid from the mare uterus was used to investigate its relation to antibacterial defenses. Uterine flushings were collected at Day 3 of estrus, Day 8 postovulation and Day 15 postovulation. Uterine proteins were concentrated by ultrafiltration, dialyzed and examined for chemotactic activity to neutrophils and for antibacterial properties. Serum taken at the time of flushing was dialyzed and studied in a similar manner. Neutrophil migration in response to serum from Day 3 estrus and Day 8 postovulation was increased (P less than 0.05) above controls. Uterine protein from Day 8 postovulation and from Day 3 of estrus also stimulated neutrophil migration (P less than 0.05) above values of controls. Antibacterial activity was measured by incubation of S. zooepidemicus with concentrated uterine flushing or serum. Serum from all three estrous cycle intervals diluted 1:10 or used at a protein concentration equal to the protein concentration of uterine fluid did not inhibit growth. After 4 h of incubation, bacterial growth in estrous serum was significantly greater (P less than 0.01) than serum taken at Day 8 and Day 15 postovulation. Uterine flushings from Day 8 postovulation significantly decreased bacterial colony-forming units (P less than 0.01). Heating flushings at 56 degrees C for 30 min did not abolish the antimicrobial activity, while heating flushings for 30 min at 80 degrees C removed this activity. The apparent lack of significant recovery of western North Atlantic right whale populations may be related to the availability of prey in exploitable densities. We have attempted to estimate the concentration of zooplankton required by right whales to obtain a net energetic benefit over the long term, using estimated values for body weight, metabolic rate, assimilation efficiency, time spent feeding, mouth size and swimming speed. The estimated range of required energy densities is 7.57 to 2,394 kcal m−3 (3.17 × 104 to 1.00 × 107 joule m−3 ). These values are from one to more than three orders of magnitude greater than the densest concentration sampled in the vicinity of right whale aggregations in the Great South Channel. Right whales must seek out and exploit extremely dense patches of prey organisms in order to feed efficiently. The presence of such dense patches of zooplankton is likely to be a primary characteristic of spring, summer and fall right whale habitats. 相似文献

With microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs) BeSO4 and MgSO4 stimulated tubulin polymerization as compared to a reaction mixture without exogenously added metal ion, while beryllium fluoride had no effect (E. Hamel et al., 1991, Arch. Biochem. Biophys. 286, 57-69). Effects of both cations were most dramatic at GTP concentrations in the same molar range as the tubulin concentration. We have now compared effects of beryllium and magnesium on tubulin-nucleotide interactions in both unpolymerized tubulin and in polymer. Polymer formed with magnesium had properties similar to those of polymer formed without exogenous cation, except for a 20% lower stoichiometry of exogenous GTP incorporated into the latter. In both polymers the incorporated GTP was hydrolyzed to GDP. Stoichiometry of GTP incorporation into polymers formed with beryllium or magnesium was identical, but much of the GTP in the beryllium polymer was not hydrolyzed. The beryllium polymer was more stable than the magnesium polymer. Beryllium also differed from magnesium in only weakly enhancing the binding of GTP in the exchangeable site of unpolymerized tubulin, while neither cation affected GDP exchange at the site. If both cations were present in a reaction mixture, polymer stability was little changed from that of the beryllium polymer, but most of the GTP incorporated into polymer was hydrolyzed. Six additional metal salts (AlCl3, CdCl2, CoCl2, MnCl2, SnCl2, and ZnCl2) also stimulated MAP-dependent tubulin polymerization, but enhanced polymer stability did not correlate with polymer GTP content. We postulate that enhanced polymer stability is a consequence of cation binding directly to tubulin and/or polymer while deficient GTP hydrolysis in the presence of beryllium, as well as aluminum and tin, is a consequence of tight binding of cation to GTP in the exchangeable site. 相似文献

The histological features and hormonal content of follicular fluid of antral follicles during oestrus were correlated. As a result it was possible to characterize several categories of viable and atretic follicles. A seemingly important stage in maturation appeared to be at 3 cm in diameter since follicular oestrogens and androgens underwent a 3-fold increase in concentration at that size. Evidence was obtained to suggest that oestrogens are anti-atretogenic. However, a drop in oestrogens was not the cause of atresia since degeneration commenced when levels were high. Contrary to the concept that androgens are atretogenic in some species, it was also evident that elevated androgens did not precipitate spontaneous atresia. Theca epithelioid cells not only underwent histological luteinization in viable follicles as they matured toward ovulation but occasionally in atretic follicles as well. Elevated prostaglandin F levels were associated with follicles in the transitory states of either luteinization or atresia. Granulosa cells of viable follicles only were capable of specifically binding hCG. It was not determined whether loss of binding capacity or atresia occurred first. Follicular atresia in the mare appears to be a gradual process of which the initiating cause remains unknown. 相似文献
