INCLUSIONS OF THE PROPLASTIDS AND VACUOLES IN THE SHOOT APICES OF BRYOPHYLLUM AND KALANCHOË

Spherical, membrane-bound inclusions occur in the proplastids and vacuoles of cells of Bryophyllum and Kalanchoë shoot apices. Evidence is presented indicating that the inclusions arise by the accumulation of material within the cisternae of certain tubular proplastid membranes and are then transferred to vacuoles. The results obtained from electron microscopy and from histochemical studies indicate that the contents of the inclusions are predominantly lipid.     

The genetic structure of a tribal population,the Yanomama Indians. XII. Biodemographic studies

The Yanomama Indians of Southern Vanezuela and Northern Brazil are one of the largest, relatively unacculturated tribes of the tropical rain forest. Over a period of eight years data have been collected from a considerable portion of their territory on estimated age, sex ratio, fertility rates (as determined by physical examination and urine tests), and infant death rates. Although it has been impossible to collect direct data on infanticide, this subject can be approached indirectly through distortions of the sex ratio and anecdotal information. Some historical data are also available as a basis for estimating tribal expansion in the past 100 years. With this material it has been possible to construct Life Tables for the Yanomama, and to explore the results of various perturbations of the input parameters. Data are also presented on patterns of mating and reproduction: number of spouses, mean and variance in number of surviving children, frequency of “extra-marital conceptions” based on the results of extensive blood group typings, and consanguinity rates as determined by observation and computer simulation. Although we do not present the Yanomama as typical, these data are seen as providing a basis for more realistic population models than have existed in the past. In addition, the data provide a basis for relatively precise estimates of such demographic measures as Fisher's Reproductive Value, Crow's Index of Total Selection, and Weiss' Index of Growth Regulation.     

CONDITIONS OF ILLUMINATION AND ZOOSPOROGENESIS IN KLEBSORMIDIUM FLACCIDUM1

The filamentous green alga Klebsormidium flaccidum will produce zoospores when cultured on a diurnal regime of 8-hr light and 16-hr dark. Zoosporogenesis is inhibited by interruption of the dark period with light of sufficient intensity and duration. The relationship between intensity and maximum time of interruption before total inhibition of zoosporogenesis is nonlinear.     

Evidence for a sex pheromone metabolizing cytochrome P-450 mono-oxygenase in the housefly

Direct evidence is presented for the role of a cytochrome P-450 monooxygenase (called mixed-function oxidase, or polysubstrate mono-oxygenase, PSMO) in the metabolism of the sex pheromone (Z)-9-tricosene to its corresponding epoxide and ketone in the housefly. A secondary alcohol, most likely an intermediate in the conversion of the alkene to the ketone, was also tentatively identified. The results of in vivo and in vitro experiments showed that the PSMO inhibitors, piperonyl butoxide (PB) and carbon monoxide, markedly inhibited the formation of epoxide and ketone from (9,10-³H) (Z)-9-tricosene. An examination of the relative rates of (Z)-9-tricosene metabolism showed that males exhibited a higher rate of metabolism than females with the antennae of males showing the highest activity of any tissue/organ examined. The major product from all tissues/organs was the epoxide. Data from experiments with subcellular fractions showed that the microsomal fraction had the majority of enzyme activity, which was strongly inhibited by PB and CO and required NADPH and O₂ for activity. A carbon monoxide difference spectrum with reduced cytochrome showed maximal absorbance at 450 nm and allowed quantification of the cytochrome P-450 in the microsomal fraction of 0.410-nmol cytochrome P-450 mg^?1 protein. Interaction of (Z)-9-tricosene with the cytochrome P-450 resulted in a type I spectrum, indicating that the pheromone binds to a hydrophobic site adjacent to the heme moiety of the oxidized cytochrome P-450.
