The single enlarged claw of male sand fiddler crabs, Uca pugilator, is used in contests for control of breeding burrows. The larger of the two contestants has the larger claw and usually wins. Males use one or more of 10 agonistic elements that vary in intensity from a no-contact extension of the claw to the flip of an opponent. We used the sequence of elements employed and the duration of unstaged, naturally occurring contests in a South Carolina salt marsh to evaluate three models of extended contests: (1) energetic war of attrition, (2) cumulative assessment and (3) sequential assessment. Contests usually began with elements of low action intensity and often proceeded to elements of high intensity. Elements of higher intensity were correlated with both contest duration and the number of contest elements. Contest duration increased as opponents became more evenly matched in size, a result consistent with both cumulative and sequential assessment models. Variation in duration increased as the relative sizes of opponents increased, also in accordance with sequential assessment. The absolute size of the smaller contestant had no effect on contest duration, in contrast to predictions based on cumulative assessment or energetic war of attrition models. Contestants that lost a fight were more likely to engage immediately in another fight without loss of contest intensity, if their previous fight had been long and intense. This result is inconsistent with contests of endurance, such as the energetic war of attrition or the cumulative assessment game, but it is consistent with the ritualized display of strength and fighting skill. Thus, sequential assessment appears to best explain ritualized fiddler crab contests. Cumulative assessment, however, may be the appropriate model for extended, nonritualized, all-out fights. Cumulative assessment may also explain the tenure of individuals on breeding grounds where multiple engagements are likely to test endurance and tolerance to damage over a period of days. Abstract
We present a regional fuel load model (1 km2 spatial resolution) applied in the southern African savanna region. The model is based on a patch-scale production efficiency
model (PEM) scaled up to the regional level using empirical relationships between patch-scale behavior and multi-source remote
sensing data (spatio-temporal variability of vegetation and climatic variables). The model requires the spatial distribution
of woody vegetation cover, which is used to determine separate respiration rates for tree and grass. Net primary production,
grass and tree leaf death, and herbivory are also taken into account in this mechanistic modeling approach. The fuel load
model has been calibrated and validated from independent measurements taken from savanna vegetation in Africa southward from
the equator. A sensitivity analysis on the effect of climate variables (incoming radiation, air temperature, and precipitation)
has been conducted to demonstrate the strong role that water availability has in determining productivity and subsequent fuel
load over the southern African region. The model performance has been tested in four different areas representative of a regional
increasing rainfall gradient—Etosha National Park, Namibia, Mongu and Kasama, Zambia, as well as in Kruger National Park,
South Africa. Within each area, we analyze model output from three different magnitudes of canopy coverage (<5, 30, and 50%).
We find that fuel load ranges predicted by the model are globally in agreement with field measurements for the same year.
High rainfall sustains green herbaceous production late in the dry season and delays tree leaf litter production. Effect of
water on production varies across the rainfall gradient with delayed start of green material production in more arid regions. 相似文献

Primary structure of bovine matrix Gla protein, a new vitamin K-dependent bone protein 总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
The complete amino acid sequence of bovine bone matrix Gla protein (MGP) was determined by automatic sequence analysis of the intact protein and of peptides isolated from tryptic and BNPS-skatole digests. This 79-residue, vitamin K-dependent protein contains a single disulfide bond and 4.8 gamma-carboxyglutamate (Gla) residues, one each at positions 37, 41, 48, and 52, and 0.8 Gla and 0.2 Glu at position 2. There is sufficient sequence homology between MGP and bone Gla protein (BGP) to indicate that these two bovine bone proteins arose by gene duplication and subsequent divergent evolution. Although MGP has a very low solubility in water compared to BGP, there is no hydrophobic domain in MGP which could account for its insolubility, and the overall fraction of hydrophobic residues is 32% for MGP compared to 43% for BGP. MGP is the first vitamin K-dependent protein to be discovered which has several non-gamma-carboxylated residues to the NH2-terminal side of its Gla residues. The presence of NH2-terminal Glu residues between the putative targeting domain for the gamma-carboxylase in the MGP leader sequence and the mid-molecule Gla residues suggests that the gamma-carboxylase may have additional, as yet unrecognized, specificity requirements which determine the susceptibility of Glu residues for gamma-carboxylation. 相似文献

Female sex steroid induced epithelial changes in the gallbladder of the ovariectomized Syrian hamster. 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Ovariectomized Syrian hamsters treated by female sex steroids during a 1-month period show gallbladder surface epithelial changes in the fundic area consistent with apical bulging and decapitations of the epithelial cells. These events were detected in the infundibulum and the fundic or body regions of estrogen- and estrogen+progesterone-treated hamsters. In control hamsters, these events were restricted to the region in the vicinity of the bile duct. Following steroid treatment, intraluminal deposits detected resembled Ca-bilirubinate deposits described in previous studies while decapitations are similar to endometrial epithelium changes associated with hormonal physiological changes or treatments. Moreover some small electron-dense deposits are comparable to those found in human cholesterol gallstones. This report indicates that, besides an alteration in bile composition, cell fragments originating from the surface epithelium of the bile duct and/or of the gallbladder mucosal epithelium could participate in gallstone nucleation. 相似文献
