The single enlarged claw of male sand fiddler crabs, Uca pugilator, is used in contests for control of breeding burrows. The larger of the two contestants has the larger claw and usually wins. Males use one or more of 10 agonistic elements that vary in intensity from a no-contact extension of the claw to the flip of an opponent. We used the sequence of elements employed and the duration of unstaged, naturally occurring contests in a South Carolina salt marsh to evaluate three models of extended contests: (1) energetic war of attrition, (2) cumulative assessment and (3) sequential assessment. Contests usually began with elements of low action intensity and often proceeded to elements of high intensity. Elements of higher intensity were correlated with both contest duration and the number of contest elements. Contest duration increased as opponents became more evenly matched in size, a result consistent with both cumulative and sequential assessment models. Variation in duration increased as the relative sizes of opponents increased, also in accordance with sequential assessment. The absolute size of the smaller contestant had no effect on contest duration, in contrast to predictions based on cumulative assessment or energetic war of attrition models. Contestants that lost a fight were more likely to engage immediately in another fight without loss of contest intensity, if their previous fight had been long and intense. This result is inconsistent with contests of endurance, such as the energetic war of attrition or the cumulative assessment game, but it is consistent with the ritualized display of strength and fighting skill. Thus, sequential assessment appears to best explain ritualized fiddler crab contests. Cumulative assessment, however, may be the appropriate model for extended, nonritualized, all-out fights. Cumulative assessment may also explain the tenure of individuals on breeding grounds where multiple engagements are likely to test endurance and tolerance to damage over a period of days. In Exp. 1, PMSG was injected to 26-day-old prepubertal rats to induce ovulations. On Day 2 (2 days later, the equivalent of the day of pro-oestrus) they received at 08:00 h 5 mg hydroxyflutamide or vehicle and at 12:00 h 2 mg progesterone or testosterone or vehicle. Animals were killed at 18:00 h on Day 2 or at 09:00 h on Day 3. Progesterone but not testosterone restored the preovulatory LH surge and ovulation in hydroxyflutamide-treated rats. In Exp. 2, 2 mg progesterone or testosterone were injected between 10:30 and 11:00 h on Day 2, to advance the pro-oestrous LH surge and ovulation in PMSG-primed prepubertal rats. Injection of hydroxyflutamide abolished the ability of progesterone to advance the LH surge or ovulation. Testosterone did not induce the advancement of LH surge or ovulation. In Exp. 3, ovariectomized prepubertal rats implanted with oestradiol-17 beta showed significantly (P less than 0.01) elevated serum LH concentrations at 18:00 h over those observed at 10:00 h. Progesterone injection to these animals further elevated the serum LH concentrations at 18:00 h, in a dose-dependent manner, with maximal values resulting from 1 mg progesterone. Hydroxyflutamide treatment significantly (P less than 0.003) reduced the serum LH values in rats receiving 0-1 mg progesterone but 2 mg progesterone were able to overcome this inhibition. It is concluded that progesterone but not testosterone can reverse the effects of hydroxyflutamide on the preovulatory LH surge and ovulation. It appears that hydroxyflutamide may interfere with progesterone action in induction of the LH surge, suggesting a hitherto undescribed anti-progestagenic action of hydroxyflutamide.  相似文献

Abstract We present a regional fuel load model (1 km2 spatial resolution) applied in the southern African savanna region. The model is based on a patch-scale production efficiency model (PEM) scaled up to the regional level using empirical relationships between patch-scale behavior and multi-source remote sensing data (spatio-temporal variability of vegetation and climatic variables). The model requires the spatial distribution of woody vegetation cover, which is used to determine separate respiration rates for tree and grass. Net primary production, grass and tree leaf death, and herbivory are also taken into account in this mechanistic modeling approach. The fuel load model has been calibrated and validated from independent measurements taken from savanna vegetation in Africa southward from the equator. A sensitivity analysis on the effect of climate variables (incoming radiation, air temperature, and precipitation) has been conducted to demonstrate the strong role that water availability has in determining productivity and subsequent fuel load over the southern African region. The model performance has been tested in four different areas representative of a regional increasing rainfall gradient—Etosha National Park, Namibia, Mongu and Kasama, Zambia, as well as in Kruger National Park, South Africa. Within each area, we analyze model output from three different magnitudes of canopy coverage (<5, 30, and 50%). We find that fuel load ranges predicted by the model are globally in agreement with field measurements for the same year. High rainfall sustains green herbaceous production late in the dry season and delays tree leaf litter production. Effect of water on production varies across the rainfall gradient with delayed start of green material production in more arid regions.  相似文献

Ovariectomized Syrian hamsters treated by female sex steroids during a 1-month period show gallbladder surface epithelial changes in the fundic area consistent with apical bulging and decapitations of the epithelial cells. These events were detected in the infundibulum and the fundic or body regions of estrogen- and estrogen+progesterone-treated hamsters. In control hamsters, these events were restricted to the region in the vicinity of the bile duct. Following steroid treatment, intraluminal deposits detected resembled Ca-bilirubinate deposits described in previous studies while decapitations are similar to endometrial epithelium changes associated with hormonal physiological changes or treatments. Moreover some small electron-dense deposits are comparable to those found in human cholesterol gallstones. This report indicates that, besides an alteration in bile composition, cell fragments originating from the surface epithelium of the bile duct and/or of the gallbladder mucosal epithelium could participate in gallstone nucleation.  相似文献
