Generic delimitation in the Triticeae has long been problematical because the extensive hybridization in the group is not readily accomodated in a hierarchical classification. The genomic genera of Löve (1984) are one solution, but fully one-third of them are polyphyletic, incorporating 2 or more genomes. The suggestion that the tribe be considered a single genus (Stebbins, 1956) is theoretically defensible—the genus would be strictly monophyletic—but probably impractical. This paper presents a cladistic analysis of the tribe that differs from previous analyses in that it uses only strictly monophyletic (monogenomic) groups as terminal taxa; hybrids (heterogenomic groups) are shown as reticulations. Monophyletic groups can then be delimited to minimize the number of polyphyletic genera. A classification incorporating genomic information is derived from the phylogeny.  相似文献

Previous observations have indicated that specific behavioral responses to anxiogenic stimuli emerge over adolescent development in male rats and that gonadal androgens during puberty are essential for this emergence. The objective of the current study was to evaluate mechanisms via which androgens might be organizing the brain during adolescence for appropriate mature adaptive responses. Male rats were exposed to fadrozole (an aromatase inhibitor, 5 mg/kg), flutamide (an androgen receptor antagonist, 10 mg/kg), or MK-434 (a 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor, 10 mg/kg) from day 29 to 60 and tested for environment-specific social interaction (SI) at 60 days of age. The emergence of adult-typical SI was impaired by exposure to the aromatase inhibitor and to the antiandrogen, whereas exposure to the 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor was without effect. Peripheral indices of drug effects indicated that the respective mechanisms had been altered by the different compounds. These results suggest that testosterone induction of aromatase is critical for the organization of mature SI behavior in male rats over adolescent development.  相似文献

The introduction of nonnative oysters (i.e., Crassostrea ariakensis) into the Chesapeake Bay has been proposed as necessary for the restoration of the oyster industry; however, nothing is known about the public health risks related to contamination of these oysters with human pathogens. Commercial market-size C. ariakensis triploids were maintained in large marine tanks with water of low (8-ppt), medium (12-ppt), and high (20-ppt) salinities spiked with 1.0 × 105 transmissive stages of the following human pathogens: Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts, Giardia lamblia cysts, and microsporidian spores (i.e., Encephalitozoon intestinalis, Encephalitozoon hellem, and Enterocytozoon bieneusi). Viable oocysts and spores were still detected in oysters on day 33 post-water inoculation (pwi), and cysts were detected on day 14 pwi. The recovery, bioaccumulation, depuration, and inactivation rates of human waterborne pathogens by C. ariakensis triploids were driven by salinity and were optimal in medium- and high-salinity water. The concentration of human pathogens from ambient water by C. ariakensis and the retention of these pathogens without (or with minimal) inactivation and a very low depuration rate provide evidence that these oysters may present a public health threat upon entering the human food chain, if harvested from polluted water. This conclusion is reinforced by the concentration of waterborne pathogens used in the present study, which was representative of levels of infectious agents in surface waters, including the Chesapeake Bay. Aquacultures of nonnative oysters in the Chesapeake Bay will provide excellent ecological services in regard to efficient cleaning of human-infectious agents from the estuarine waters.  相似文献

Exercise induces shifts in the internal temperature threshold at which cutaneous vasodilation begins. To find whether this shift is accomplished through the vasoconstrictor system or the cutaneous active vasodilator system, two forearm sites (0.64 cm2) in each of 11 subjects were iontophoretically treated with bretylium tosylate to locally block adrenergic vasoconstrictor control. Skin blood flow was monitored by laser-Doppler flowmetry (LDF) at those sites and at two adjacent untreated sites. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) was measured noninvasively. Cutaneous vascular conductance was calculated as LDF/MAP. Forearm sweat rate was also measured in seven of the subjects by dew point hygrometry. Whole body skin temperature was raised to 38 degrees C, and supine bicycle ergometer exercise was then performed for 7-10 min. The internal temperature at which cutaneous vasodilation began was recorded for all sites, as was the temperature at which sweating began. The same subjects also participated in studies of heat stress without exercise to obtain vasodilator and sudomotor thresholds from rest. The internal temperature thresholds for cutaneous vasodilation were higher during exercise at both bretylium-treated (36.95 +/- 0.07 degrees C rest, 37.20 +/- 0.04 degrees C exercise, P less than 0.05) and untreated sites (36.95 +/- 0.06 degrees C rest, 37.23 +/- 0.05 degrees C exercise, P less than 0.05). The thresholds for cutaneous vasodilation during rest or during exercise were not statistically different between untreated and bretylium-treated sites (P greater than 0.05). Species distribution models (SDMs) in river ecosystems can incorporate climate information by using air temperature and precipitation as surrogate measures of instream conditions or by using independent models of water temperature and hydrology to link climate to instream habitat. The latter approach is preferable but constrained by the logistical burden of developing water temperature and hydrology models. We therefore assessed whether regional scale, freshwater SDM predictions are fundamentally different when climate data versus instream temperature and hydrology are used as covariates. Maximum entropy (MaxEnt) SDMs were built for 15 freshwater fishes using one of two covariate sets: 1) air temperature and precipitation (climate variables) in combination with physical habitat variables; or 2) water temperature, hydrology (instream variables) and physical habitat. Three procedures were then used to compare results from climate vs instream models. First, equivalence tests assessed average pairwise differences (site‐specific comparisons throughout each species’ range) among climate and instream models. Second, ‘congruence’ tests determined how often the same stream segments were assigned high habitat suitability by climate and instream models. Third, Schoener's D and Warren's I niche overlap statistics quantified range‐wide similarity in predicted habitat suitability from climate vs instream models. Equivalence tests revealed small, pairwise differences in habitat suitability between climate and instream models (mean pairwise differences in MaxEnt raw scores for all species < 3 × 10–4). Congruence tests showed a strong tendency for climate and instream models to predict high habitat suitability at the same stream segments (median congruence = 68%). D and I statistics reflected a high margin of overlap among climate and instream models (median D = 0.78, median I = 0.96). Overall, we found little support for the hypothesis that SDM predictions are fundamentally different when climate versus instream covariates are used to model fish species’ distributions at the scale of the Columbia Basin.  相似文献
