The kinetics of denaturation of egg albumin have been determined for methanol, ethanol, propanol, and butanol. The reactions are first order in respect to protein but between 11th and 18th order for the alcohols. The denaturation reaction is characterized by a large temperature coefficient with little or no dependence on pH. There is a marked change of pH when proteins are denatured. A series of eight proteins has been studied. There is surprisingly little difference in susceptibility to alcohol denaturation between the various proteins. Methanol, ethanol, propanol, and butanol are strongly bound to egg albumin—butanol being the most strongly bound. The binding of alcohol is probably accompanied by protein dehydration. The polyhydric alcohols' behavior is much different. These alcohols do not denature proteins and the protein is hydrated. Sucrose produces the greatest degree of hydration. 相似文献

Proliferatively inactive BALB/c 3T3 mouse cells in dense cultures initiate a growth-division cycle upon exposure to fresh calf serum in a low-calcium (0.01 mM) medium. If these calcium-deprived cells are not supplied with calcium sometime during the first 10 hours after serum stimulation, they will rapidly return to a proliferatively inactive state without initiating DNA synthesis. The prereplicative development of such stimulated calcium-deprived cells appears to stop at an advanced stage, because addition of calcium as late as 10 hours after serum exposure rapidly initiates DNA synthesis, and enables the culture's DNA-synthetic activity subsequently to reach its peak value at the same time as in control cultures. 相似文献

A complex network of trade-offs exists between wheat quality and nutritional traits. We investigated the correlated relationships among several milling and baking traits as well as mineral density in refined white and whole grain flour. Our aim was to determine their pleiotropic genetic control in a multi-parent population over two trial years with direct application to practical breeding. Co-location of major quantitative trait loci (QTL) and principal component based multi-trait QTL mapping increased the power to detect QTL and revealed pleiotropic effects explaining many complementary and antagonistic trait relationships. High molecular weight glutenin subunit genes explained much of the heritable variation in important dough rheology traits, although additional QTL were detected. Several QTL, including one linked to the TaGW2 gene, controlled grain size and increased flour extraction rate. The semi-dwarf Rht-D1b allele had a positive effect on Hagberg falling number, but reduced grain size, specific weight, grain protein content and flour water absorption. Mineral nutrient concentrations were lower in Rht-D1b lines for many elements, in wholemeal and white flour, but potassium concentration was higher in Rht-D1b lines. The presence of awns increased calcium content without decreasing extraction rate, despite the negative correlation between these traits. QTL were also found that affect the relative concentrations of key mineral nutrients compared to phosphorus which may help increase bioavailability without associated anti-nutritional effects of phytic acid. The effects of temporal variation in exposure to predation risk on behavioral tradeoffs were tested in the rusty crayfish, Orconectes rusticus. Based on the risk allocation hypothesis, we predicted that increasing the frequency of encounter with predation risk would yield increasing responses to a food stimulus in the presence of both a risk stimulus and a food stimulus. Crayfish were exposed to risk every 12 h, every 6 h, or left undisturbed for 24 h prior to testing. The risk stimuli used were a plain water control, snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) cue, and conspecific alarm cue. After 24 h of conditioning, the crayfish were exposed to a combination of risk cue and food cue. The behavioral responses of the crayfish were recorded for 5 min immediately following the introduction of the cues and again for 5 min, 1 h after stimulus exposure. The crayfish were observed at the two times to determine how their responses to the combination of risk and food cues changed over time. The responses of the crayfish were significantly influenced by stimulus treatment, time, and the interaction of time and stimulus treatment. Further analysis indicated that responses to the stimulus treatments changed differently over time. Immediately after exposure, the crayfish were more active in the control and snapping turtle treatments than in the conspecific alarm treatment. The high levels of activity initially observed in the control and snapping turtle treatments waned over time, such that the behaviors recorded 1 h after exposure were not significantly affected by stimulus treatment. Neither frequency nor the interactions of frequency with stimulus and/or time significantly affected crayfish behavior. We describe an approach to analyzing single- and multiunit (ensemble) discharge patterns based on information-theoretic distance measures and on empirical theories derived from work in universal signal processing. In this approach, we quantify the difference between response patterns, whether time-varying or not, using information-theoretic distance measures. We apply these techniques to single- and multiple-unit processing of sound amplitude and sound location. These examples illustrate that neurons can simultaneously represent at least two kinds of information with different levels of fidelity. The fidelity can persist through a transient and a subsequent steady-state response, indicating that it is possible for an evolving neural code to represent information with constant fidelity. 相似文献
