By dispersing from localized aggregations of recruits, individuals may obtain energetic benefits due to reduced experienced
density. However, this will depend on the spatial scale over which individuals compete. Here, we quantify this scale for juvenile
Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) following emergence and dispersal from nests. A single nest was placed in each of ten replicate streams during winter, and
information on the individual positions (±1 m) and the body sizes of the resulting young-of-the-year (YOY) juveniles was obtained
by sampling during the summer. In six of the ten streams, model comparisons suggested that individual body size was most closely
related to the density within a mean distance of 11 m (range 2–26 m). A link between body size and density on such a restricted
spatial scale suggests that dispersal from nests confers energetic benefits that can counterbalance any survival costs. For
the four remaining streams, which had a high abundance of trout and older salmon cohorts, no single spatial scale could best
describe the relation between YOY density and body size. Energetic benefits of dispersal associated with reduced local density
therefore appear to depend on the abundance of competing cohorts or species, which have spatial distributions that are less
predictable in terms of distance from nests. Thus, given a trade-off between costs and benefits associated with dispersal,
and variation in benefits among environments, we predict an evolving and/or phenotypically plastic growth rate threshold which
determines when an individual decides to disperse from areas of high local density. 相似文献

The resettlement behavior of meiobenthic copepods, which actively migrated from sediments in a seagrass bed, was investigated in a shallow subtidal area in Tampa Bay, Florida, U.S.A. Experimental studies were conducted to determine whether meiobenthic copepods after emerging from sediments at sunset reenter the sedimentary substratum or select other subhabitats, water and seagrass blades. Migrating copepods were collected with emergence traps and transferred to experimental aquaria in the field which contained sediment, seagrass-blade and water treatments. Settlement into each type of treatment was measured in separate 2-h and 9-h experiments. Differences in densities of copepod taxa retrieved from emergence traps and introduced into experimental aquaria were recorded as were differing relative proportions of each copepod species returning to the substratum treatments. Settlement patterns of total copepods and three dominant copepod species, Zausodes arenicolus, Halicyclops sp. and Robertsonia hamata, departed from those expected by chance. The populations of R. hamata and Halicyclops sp. which settled were generally skewed towards males and a close matching of males and copepodites within treatment dishes was evident. Similar to nighttime-emergence patterns, timing and magnitude of postmigration reentry differs among copepod taxa and such reentry may be linked to reproductive events. Complex behavioral processes previously noted for fish and macrofaunal organisms in seagrass beds may also be important in recruitment and reassortment of meiobenthic copepods. 相似文献

Non-invasive endocrine methods enable investigation of the relationship between ecological variation and ovarian activity and how this impacts on demographic processes. The underlying physiological factors driving high variation in inter-calving intervals among multi-parous African elephants offer an interesting system for such an investigation. This study investigates the relationship between Normalized Differential Vegetation Index (NDVI), an ecosystem surrogate measure of primary productivity, and fecal progestin concentrations among wild female elephants. Matched fecal samples and behavioral data on reproductive activity were collected from 37 focal individuals during the two-year study. Linear mixed models were used to explore the relationship between fecal 5alpha-pregnane-3-ol-20-one concentrations and the independent variables of NDVI, calf sex, female age, gestation day, and time since last parturition. Among both non-pregnant and pregnant females, fecal 5alpha-pregnane-3-ol-20-one concentrations were significantly correlated with time-specific NDVI indicating a strong relationship between ecological conditions and endocrine activity regulating reproduction. In addition, the age of a female and time since her last parturition impacted hormone concentrations. These results indicate that the identification of an individual's reproductive status from a single hormone sample is possible, but difficult to achieve in practice since numerous independent factors, particularly season, impact fecal hormone concentrations. Regardless of season, however, fecal 5alpha-pregnane-3-ol-20-one concentrations below 1 microg/g were exclusively collected from non-pregnant females, which could be used as a threshold value to identify non-pregnant individuals. Collectively the information generated contributes to a better understanding of environmental regulation of reproductive endocrinology in wild elephant populations, information salient to the management and manipulation of population dynamics in this species. 相似文献

Weibel-Palade bodies are the 1-5 microm long rod-shaped storage organelles of endothelial cells. We have investigated the determinants and functional significance of this shape. We find that the folding of the hemostatic protein von Willebrand's factor (VWF) into tubules underpins the rod-like shape of Weibel-Palade bodies. Further, while the propeptide and the N-terminal domains of mature VWF are sufficient to form tubules, their maintenance relies on a pH-dependent interaction between the two. We show that the tubular conformation of VWF is essential for a rapid unfurling of 100 microm long, platelet-catching VWF filaments when exposed to neutral pH after exocytosis in cell culture and in living blood vessels. If tubules are disassembled prior to exocytosis, then short or tangled filaments are released and platelet recruitment is reduced. Thus, a 100-fold compaction of VWF into tubules determines the unique shape of Weibel-Palade bodies and is critical to this protein's hemostatic function. 相似文献

Leukocyte transendothelial migration (TEM) has been modeled as a multistep process beginning with rolling adhesion, followed by firm adhesion, and ending with either transcellular or paracellular passage of the leukocyte across the endothelial monolayer. In the case of paracellular TEM, endothelial cell (EC) junctions are transiently disassembled to allow passage of leukocytes. Numerous lines of evidence demonstrate that tyrosine phosphorylation of adherens junction proteins, such as vascular endothelial cadherin (VE-cadherin) and beta-catenin, correlates with the disassembly of junctions. However, the role of tyrosine phosphorylation in the regulation of junctions during leukocyte TEM is not completely understood. Using human leukocytes and EC, we show that ICAM-1 engagement leads to activation of two tyrosine kinases, Src and Pyk2. Using phospho-specific Abs, we show that engagement of ICAM-1 induces phosphorylation of VE-cadherin on tyrosines 658 and 731, which correspond to the p120-catenin and beta-catenin binding sites, respectively. These phosphorylation events require the activity of both Src and Pyk2. We find that inhibition of endothelial Src with PP2 or SU6656 blocks neutrophil transmigration (71.1 +/- 3.8% and 48.6 +/- 3.8% reduction, respectively), whereas inhibition of endothelial Pyk2 also results in decreased neutrophil transmigration (25.5 +/- 6.0% reduction). Moreover, overexpression of the nonphosphorylatable Y658F or Y731F mutants of VE-cadherin impairs transmigration of neutrophils compared with overexpression of wild-type VE-cadherin (32.7 +/- 7.1% and 38.8 +/- 6.5% reduction, respectively). Our results demonstrate that engagement of ICAM-1 by leukocytes results in tyrosine phosphorylation of VE-cadherin, which is required for efficient neutrophil TEM. 相似文献

Females of many Old World primates produce conspicuous vocalizations in combination with copulations. Indirect evidence exists
that in Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus), the structure of these copulation calls is related to changes in reproductive hormone levels. However, the structure of
these calls does not vary significantly around the timing of ovulation when estrogen and progestogen levels show marked changes.
We here aimed to clarify this paradox by investigating how the steroid hormones estrogen and progesterone are related to changes
in the acoustic structure of copulation calls. We collected data on semi-free-ranging Barbary macaques in Gibraltar and at
La Forêt des Singes in Rocamadour, France. We determined estrogen and progestogen concentrations from fecal samples and combined
them with a fine-grained structural analysis of female copulation calls (N = 775 calls of 11 females). Our analysis indicates a time lag of 3 d between changes in fecal hormone levels, adjusted for
the excretion lag time, and in the acoustic structure of copulation calls. Specifically, we found that estrogen increased
the duration and frequency of the calls, whereas progestogen had an antagonistic effect. Importantly, however, variation in
acoustic variables did not track short-term changes such as the peak in estrogen occurring around the timing of ovulation.
Taken together, our results help to explain why female Barbary macaque copulation calls are related to changes in hormone
levels but fail to indicate the fertile phase. 相似文献

Using the normal adult rat hepatocytes, plated on rat tail collagen-coated dishes and fed a chemically defined medium, we demonstrate here that ciprofibrate at 0.1 mM concentration, increases significantly the mRNA levels of fatty acyl-CoA oxidase, enoyl-CoA hydratase/3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase bifunctional protein, and thiolase (the three enzymes of the β-oxidation system), and causes peroxisome proliferation. Increase in mRNA levels of these genes was evident within 1 h and was maximal 24 h after the addition of ciprofibrate. In hepatocytes cultured in the absence of ciprofibrate, the basal levels of these enzymes were low and further declined with time. Concomitant treatment of hepatocytes with cycloheximide did not inhibit or superinduce the mRNA levels, indicating that this induction may represent a primary (direct) effect of this compound on the expression of these genes and does not apparently involve short-lived repressor protein(s). 相似文献

Metabolism must be coordinated with development to provide the appropriate energetic needs for each stage in the life cycle. Little is known, however, about how this temporal control is achieved. Here, we show that the Drosophila ortholog of the estrogen-related receptor (ERR) family of nuclear receptors directs a critical metabolic transition during development. dERR mutants die as larvae with low ATP levels and elevated levels of circulating sugars. The expression of active dERR protein in mid-embryogenesis triggers a coordinate switch in gene expression that drives a metabolic program normally associated with proliferating cells, supporting the dramatic growth that occurs during larval development. This study shows that dERR plays a central role in carbohydrate metabolism, demonstrates that a proliferative metabolic program is used in normal developmental growth, and provides a molecular context to understand the close association between mammalian ERR family members and cancer. 相似文献
