It is emphasized in growth analysis of self-thinning populations that relative mortality rate pertains to the difference between relative growth rates and net assimilation rates, each of which are definable on a mean plant size basis or on a biomass basis. The time trends of the ratio of relative mortality rate to relative growth rates to be expected according to Tadaki's, Shinozaki's and Hozumi's models are compared with that of the eastern white pine population, and a good agreement is exhibited. As an alternative to Hozumi's model, a new model is constructed to unite the logistic theory of plant growth and the 3/2 power law concerning self-thinning, which so far have usually been applied independently to growth analysis. To construct the model the following assumptions are made: the fundamental equation to relate mean plant weight with density in self-thinning population proposed by Shinozaki, and a special population with a specific initial density which follows thew-p trajectory of the 3/2 power law type and has an exponential decrease in its density with biological time. Properties of the model are examined from ecological and mathematical viewpoints.  相似文献

To elucidate the role of tyrosine residues in the shift of max and the light-driven proton pump of bacteriorhodopsin~ the photochemical reaction of tyrosine-iodinated bacteriorhodopsin (tyr-mod-bR) was investigated by low-temperature spectrophotometry. After 4–5 of 11 tyrosine residues of bacteriorhodopsin were iodinated, the meta-intermediate of tyr-mod-bR in 75% glycerol solution became so stable that its decay could be observed even at room temperature and i t was stable in the dark for several hours at –65°C.Four batho-intermediates were formed by irradiation with green light (500 nm) at –170°C. Like native bacteriorhodopsin, these batho-intermediates were photoreversible at –170°C. Four corresponding meta-intermediates were also formed by irradiation at –60°C. Using the difference spectra between meta-intermediates and tyr-mod-bR, the absorption spectra of four kinds of tyr-mod-bRs, batho-intermediates, and meta-intermediates were estimated. Each was at shorter wavelengths than that of its corresponding type in native bacteriorhodopsin. The results indicate that two or more tyrosine residues have some role in determining color in native bacteriorhodopsin.  相似文献

Spruce leaves greened in darkness were devoid of three of the five thermoluminescence bands found for mature leaves. These bands were developed rapidly by exposure of the dark-grown leaves to continuous light. The development of these bands was studied by illumination with repetitive flashes at varied intervals. Flashes at intervals of 1 s were the most effective in inducing these bands. Those at shorter or longer intervals were less effective. It was deduced from these data that the development of these bands is a multiquantum process which involves at least two photo-events with a dark reaction between them.  相似文献

The antibiotic cordycepin (3'-deoxyadenosine), a known specificinhibitor of nucleic acid synthesis and polyadenylation of RNA,remarkably retarded decrease in the chlorophyll and proteincontents of senescing tobacco leaf disks. The effectivenessof cordycepin, at its optimum concentration (ca. 4 x 10–5M), was 53% as effective as a cytokinin, benzyladenine at 10–6M. The impact of the gut microbiome on host health is becoming increasingly recognized. To date, there is growing evidence that the complex characteristics of the microbial community play key roles as potential biomarkers and predictors of responses in cancer therapy. Many studies have shown that altered commensal bacteria lead to cancer susceptibility and progression in diverse pathways. In this review, we critically assess the data for gut microbiota related to gastrointestinal cancer, including esophageal, gastric, pancreatic, colorectal cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma. Importantly, the underlying mechanisms of gut microbiota involved in cancer occurrence, prevention and treatment are elucidated. The purpose of this review is to provide novel insights for applying this understanding to the development of new therapeutic strategies in gastrointestinal cancer by targeting the microbial community.  相似文献

The outcome of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection varies among individuals, but the genetic factors involved remain unknown. We conducted a population-based association study in which 238 Japanese individuals positive for anti-HCV antibody were genotyped for 269 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 103 candidate genes that might influence the course of infection. Altogether, 50 SNPs in 32 genes were listed. Genetic polymorphisms in IL4, IL8RB, IL10RA, PRL, ADA, NFKB1, GRAP2, CABIN1, IFNAR2, IFI27, IFI41, TNFRSF1A, ALDOB, AP1B1, SULT2B1, EGF, EGFR, TGFB1, LTBP2, and CD4 were associated with persistent viremia (P < 0.05), whereas those in IL1B, IL1RL1, IL2RB, IL12RB1, IL18R1, STAT5A, GRAP2, CABIN1, IFNAR1, Mx1, BMP8, FGL1, LTBP2, CD34, and CD80 were associated with different serum alanine aminotransferase levels in HCV carriers (P < 0.05). The sorted genes allow us to draw novel hypotheses for future studies of HCV infection to ultimately identify bona fide genes and their variations.  相似文献

We investigated the expression of KIT (product of c-kit oncogene), gain-of-function mutations, and activation of its downstream signal transduction in human testicular cancers. KIT was expressed in 88% (22/25) of seminomas and in 44.4% (4/9) of non-seminomas compared to adjacent normal testicular tissue. Nine of the KIT-expressing seminomas had mutations (40.9%; 9/22) in the c-kit gene; two cases in exon 11 and 7 cases in exon 17. Two of these mutations in exon 17 were novel, and the other seven mutations were identical to the already known gain-of-function mutations which cause activation of KIT without ligand stem cell factor. All of the mutant KIT and 53.8% (7/13) of wild-type KIT were phosphorylated (activated) and associated with phosphorylated phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K). Akt was also phosphorylated in these seminomas, suggesting that the KIT-PI3K-Akt pathway is activated in seminoma. These findings suggest that the KIT-PI3K-Akt pathway is constitutively activated in testicular germ cell tumors, due to overexpression of KIT protein and/or gain-of-function mutations in the c-kit gene.  相似文献
