Adults of the brown planthopper (BPH) and the whitebacked planthopper (WBPH) that migrated into Korea from China were not parasitized by the mermithid, Agamermis unka. BPH and WBPH collected from Korean rice fields were parasitized. Parasitism of BPH in the lst-3rd, 4th, and 5th instars, and adults was 31.5%, 61.5%, 66.4%, and 45.5%, respectively, whereas parasitism of the same stages of WBPH was 50%, 50%, 100% and 90.7%, respectively. Parasitism of BPH by A. unka significantly reduced the number of eggs. Only 4.2% of the parasitized females contained eggs, whereas 85.6% of unparasitized females had eggs. Tilling of rice fields significantly increased mermithid parasitism of BPH. Mermithids parasitized 39.3% of caged adults in the untilled field and 77.8% in the tilled field.  相似文献

The rhizoid of Boergesenia forbesii. a coenocytic green alga,exhibited typical tip growth. The growth stopped at temperatureslower than 15?C and was promoted by red light but inhibitedby blue light (430 nm). The rhizoid showed negative phototropicbending caused by blue light, and the mode of bending was the"bulging" type. The dioptric effect was not involved in thisnegative phototropism. The phototropicbending process was modifiedgreatly by temperature. At low temperature (18?C), bending didnot occur but the phototropic effect could be accumulated andstored. The accumulated effect appeared as a bending in thedark when the temperature was raisedto 25?C. This accumulatedphototropic effect, designated "stored bending", attenuatedat a half-life of 1.5 hr at 18?C in the dark. (Received February 24, 1979; )  相似文献

Separation of component polysaccharides in extractable fractions of the noncellulosic matrix of Avena sativa coleoptile cell walls shows that the principal classes of polymers present are glucuronoarabinoxylans (GAX) and iodine-negative hemicellulosic β-glucans. Rhamnogalacturonan is a minor component. GAX contains about 5–10% glucuronic acid and its 4-O-methyl ether, arabinose in amount almost equal to xylose, and a small amount of galactose; some subfractions contained appreciable amounts of glucose and galacturonic acid but these may derive from separate, contaminating polysaccharides. From the sedimentation and diffusion coefficients and intrinsic viscosities of one subfraction each of the GAX and of the hemicellulosic glucan that had been purified to apparent homogeneity by criteria of sedimentation and borate electrophoresis, MWs of about 200 000 were calculated by two methods. The viscosity characteristics and gel-forming ability of the hemicellulosic glucan give evidence of appreciable molecular interactions which suggest that this polymer is an important structural component of the cell wall.  相似文献

The mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway is a highly conserved signaling cascade that converts extracellular signals into various outputs. In Caenorhabditis elegans, asymmetric expression of the candidate odorant receptor STR-2 in either the left or the right of two bilaterally symmetrical olfactory AWC neurons is regulated by axon contact and Ca2+ signaling. We show that the MAPK kinase (MAPKK) SEK-1 is required for asymmetric expression in AWC neurons. Genetic and biochemical analyses reveal that SEK-1 functions in a pathway downstream of UNC-43 and NSY-1, Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) and MAPK kinase kinase (MAPKKK), respectively. Thus, the NSY-1–SEK-1–MAPK cascade is activated by Ca2+ signaling through CaMKII and establishes asymmetric cell fate decision during neuronal development.  相似文献

Productive infection and replication of herpesviruses usually occurs in growth-arrested cells, but there has been no direct evidence in the case of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), since an efficient lytic replication system without external stimuli does not exist for the virus. Expression of the EBV lytic-switch transactivator BZLF1 protein in EBV-negative epithelial tumor cell lines, however, is known to arrest the cell cycle in G(0)/G(1) by induction of the tumor suppressor protein p53 and the cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) inhibitors p21(WAF-1/CIP-1) and p27(KIP-1), followed by the accumulation of a hypophosphorylated form of the Rb protein. In order to determine the effect of the onset of lytic viral replication on cellular events in latently EBV-infected B LCLs, a tightly controlled induction system of the EBV lytic-replication program by inducible BZLF1 protein expression was established in B95-8 cells. The induction of lytic replication completely arrested cell cycle progression and cellular DNA replication. Surprisingly, the levels of p53, p21(WAF-1/CIP-1), and p27(KIP-1) were constant before and after induction of the lytic program, indicating that the cell cycle arrest induced by the lytic program is not mediated through p53 and the CDK inhibitors. Furthermore, although cellular DNA replication was blocked, elevation of cyclin E/A expression and accumulation of hyperphosphorylated forms of Rb protein were observed, a post-G(1)/S phase characteristic of cells. Thus, while the EBV lytic program promoted specific cell cycle-associated activities involved in the progression from G(1) to S phase, it inhibited cellular DNA synthesis. Such cellular conditions appear to especially favor viral lytic replication.  相似文献

CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) are critical mediators of anti‐tumor immunity, and controlling the mechanisms that govern CTL functions could be crucial for enhancing patient outcome. Previously, we reported that hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) limits effective murine CTL responses via antigen‐presenting cells. Here, we show that a fraction of murine effector CTLs expresses the HGF receptor c‐Met (c‐Met+ CTLs). Phenotypic and functional analysis of c‐Met+ CTLs reveals that they display enhanced cytolytic capacities compared to their c‐Met? CTL counterparts. Furthermore, HGF directly restrains the cytolytic function of c‐Met+ CTLs in cell‐mediated cytotoxicity reactions in vitro and in vivo and abrogates T‐cell responses against metastatic melanoma in vivo. Finally, we establish in three murine tumor settings and in human melanoma tissues that c‐Met+ CTLs are a naturally occurring CD8+ T‐cell population. Together, our findings suggest that the HGF/c‐Met pathway could be exploited to control CD8+ T‐cell‐mediated anti‐tumor immunity.  相似文献

We examined the attachment and infectivity of two entomopathogenic nematode species, Steinernema carpocapsae and Heterorhabditis indica, on soldiers and workers in two subterranean termite species, Coptotermes formosanus and C. vastator. In attachment tests with S. carpocapsae, more nematodes attached to soldiers of C. formosanus and C. vastator in the absence of workers compared to soldiers that were in the presence of workers. In tests with soldiers alone, workers alone, and mixture of equal numbers of workers and soldiers, soldiers in the mixed groups had lower mortality than soldiers alone after 1 and 4 days for both termite species. Exposure of small groups of either termite species to S. carpocapsae resulted in higher mortality of soldiers after 1 and 4 days post exposure. Mortality in soldiers alone exposed to H. indica was not significant compared to mortality in mixed groups at 1 day exposure, but was significant after 4 days. In concentration-mortality tests, a significant two-way interaction existed between nematode concentration and termite caste for C. formosanus exposed to S. carpocapsae for 1 and 4 days. A significant effect of nematode concentration was found for C. vastator exposed to H. indica for 1 day. This termite species had lower mortality when exposed to H. indica after 1 and 4 days compared to C. formosanus. At 4 days post exposure to H. indica, the effects of nematode concentration and termite caste were significant. Steinernema carpocapsae caused higher mortality than H. indica, but mortality of workers was higher when exposed to H. indica. Soldiers of both species experienced rapid mortality when exposed to S. carpocapsae, whereas soldiers of C. vastator experienced lower mortality when exposed to H. indica. Thus, our results show that when soldiers alone or workers alone are exposed to the nematodes, there is a differential susceptibility of soldiers and workers to nematode infection with soldiers being more susceptible than workers. In a mixed group of soldiers and workers or workers alone, it appears that grooming behavior of the workers serves as a mechanism to reduce nematode infection of soldiers and workers. The reason for this differential response to nematode infection is that soldiers do not exhibit grooming behavior.  相似文献
