Modeling time delay in the NF��B signaling pathway following low dose IL-1 stimulation

Stimulation of human epithelial cells with IL-1 (10 ng/ml) + UVB radiation results in sustained NFκB activation caused by continuous IKKβ phosphorylation. We have recently published a strictly reduced ordinary differential equation model elucidating the involved mechanisms. Here, we compare model extensions for low IL-1 doses (0.5 ng/ml), where delayed IKKβ phosphorylation is observed. The extended model including a positive regulatory element, most likely auto-ubiquitination of TRAF6, reproduces the observed experimental data most convincingly. The extension is shown to be consistent with the original model and contains very sensitive processes which may serve as potential intervention targets.     

Patch-exploitation patterns in an egg parasite of elm leaf beetle

Eggs of elm beetle,Pyrrhalta luteola (Muller), normally occur in masses which can be viewed as discrete host patches in space and time. Analysis of>800 egg masses from 3 field sites in northern California revealed that the number of eggs/mass varied from 2 to>40 and that the imported egg parasiteTetrastichus gallerucae (Fonsc.) exploited a relatively large proported of the egg masses at certain times. The spatial relationship between parasitization and number of eggs/egg mass was assessed in 2 ways-i.e., for exploited masses only and for all masses combined (exploited+nonexploited). Percent parasitization was density independent in most cases for both data sets. It is suggested that both methods of analysis can provide patterns which are relevant to biological control of insect pests.

Fluorescence of Trypan blue in frozen-dried embryos of the rat

Freeze-drying and fluorescence microscopy techniques were combined to create a sensitive method for the visualization of the teratogenic dye, Trypan blue, in both protein-bound and free forms. In the development and initial application of this method, visceral yolk sacs of several gestational ages as well as normal appearing, 12-day embryos obtained from dye-injected rats were utilized. Observations on paraffinized sections of the yolk sac placentae demonstrated that only the protein-bound form of the dye exists in the yolk sac cavity whereas both forms of the dye exist in supranuclear regions of cells of the visceral endoderm. Paraffin sections of the normal appearing, 12-day embryos displayed the protein-bound form of dye within lumina of mid- and hind-gut, and both forms of dye in the primitive mucosa of mid- and hind-gut. The advantages of the method are derived not only from the use of fluorescence microscopy but also from the avoidance of solvents that are employed in more routine microtechniques.

A DATA MANAGER for the health information system Berlin.

The needs for permanently changing the logical and physical structure of a medical datebase during the development of a health information system have initiated the project of implementing a DATA MANAGER. The concept of the DATA MANAGER covers facilities for the development of the logical data structure model including documentation of the model and programming support for application programs accessing the health information system (HIS) database. The outstanding facilities of the INTERLISP system have been found to be appropriate for writing the DATA MANAGER. A first data structure model, on which the DATA MANAGER will operate, is roughly outlined.
