After the short-lived apical meristem ceases activity, a basal intercalary meristem produces all new tissues in the aerial internode of Scirpus validus Vahl. These include extensions of the original vascular system and of the original partitioning walls as well as new vascular bundles and new walls which are produced in a predictable pattern. Diaphragms begin to differentiate well within the intercalary meristem. At first their cells are indistinguishable from those that will become the aerenchyma, but they undergo segmentation and form packets of daughter cells. Such continued mitotic activity allows the diaphragms to expand with the increasing girth of the stem above the intercalary meristem. Aerenchyma cells between the diaphragms become stellate by being stretched as the cells of the vertical partitions divide and enlarge in and above the intercalary meristem. 相似文献

Two annual (Echinodorus rostratus (Nutt.) Engelm., Sagittaria calycina Engelm.) and 3 perennial (Alisma subcordatum Rat., S. brevirostra Mack & Bush, S. latifolia Wild.) species of Alismataceae were compared to determine differences in reproductive effort and timing. The annuals produce flowers and fruits earlier and later than the perennials and, under optimal conditions, the annuals also produce more (but smaller) seeds annually per plant. Populations of the annuals occur on exposed mud and are erratically abundant from year to year, while populations of the perennials are more stable. Seed viability of the annuals decreases more slowly over time. There is general congruence of these life-history attributes with the concepts of “r” and “K” strategies. 相似文献

Summary Some goitrogens like methyl thiouracil (MTU) because of their thynamide grouping act as antithyroid drugs inhibiting the organification of iodide, but do not alter the iodide transport. Their administration to an intact animal, therefore, might alter the thyroidal iodine kinetics. Here an attempt has been made to study the effect of MTU on thyroidal iodine kinetics in rats as well as to find out whether any difference in kinetics could be detected between different radioiodines, viz.,131I,125I, and123I. Cumulated thyroidal activity which is a time integral of the activity has been taken as the parameter to represent the sum effect of thyroidal iodine kinetics over a specific time period of interest.From the in vivo thyroidal activity measurements, carried out over extended periods of time, the cumulated activity was calculated for both MTU treated and normal rats that received131I,125I, or123I at different times before the MTU start. Within a day of the start of the MTU there is a rapid loss of thyroidal iodine. The severity of the loss depended upon the time that elapsed between the start of the MTU schedule and the particular radioiodine administered. Tagetes minuta L, syn.T. glandulifera Schrank grows wild in western Himalaya and is one of the important source of essential oils. The crop has been domesticated by our Institute not only in sub-temperate but also in subtropical zones and farmers have opted Tagetes minuta as an essential oil crop in their cropping system. Four cropping systems have been evolved based on variable sowing and harvesting times yielding varying quality of essential oil. All the four crop practices can be practised in sub-temperate regions while one crop practice is recommended for subtropical regions. Tagetes oil contains three major constituents of monoterpene ketones namely ocimenones E&Z, tagetones E&Z and dihydrotagetone and a hydrocarbon ocimene which are important base materials for synthesizing new aroma molecules.Tagetes oil of desired constituents can be produced by adopting selective crop practice based on experimental findings of present investigation. Ocimene rich crop can be harvested in winter (December–January), dihydrotagetone rich crop in autumn (October–November), tagetone rich crop in summer (June) and ocimenone rich crop can be harvested in short duration autumn–winter (December–January) and summer crops. 相似文献

The Niobrara River Valley of northern Nebraska contains numerous bryophyte, vascular plant, and animal species more typical of forests far to the east, north, and west than to other forests in the grasslands that surround the Valley. Some species are probably relicts of cooler glacial and early postglacial times, when much of what is now grassland was covered by boreal and cool-temperate forests. Others entered the Valley from the east in postglacial times, and some entered from the west as the climate became semi-arid. There is a steep decline in total number of vascular plant species from the mouth of the Missouri River up through the Niobrara Valley, suggesting an environmental gradient and differential migration and extirpation of species at various times since the Pleistocene. 相似文献

The present study, addressed to understand the mechanism behind the cholesterol-induced proliferative and collagen secretory activity of smooth muscle cells, revealed that cholesterol-induced smooth muscle cellular DNA synthesis and collagen secretion was mediated through its ability to amplify the intracellular cGMP signal because of the fact that Trifluoperazine (an anticalmodulin and blocker of phospholipase A2) and colchicine (an antitubulin and inhibitor of guanyl cyclase) inhibited DNA synthesis and collagen-secretory activity of smooth muscle cells by their ability to decrease the cGMP levels within smooth muscle cells. From these results we suggest that membrane cholesterol modulated phospholipase 'A2' activity may be the basic mechanism involved in cholesterol-induced proliferative and collagen-secretory activity of smooth muscle cells in vitro. 相似文献

The flowers of Limnocharis flava (L.) Buch. are borne in an indeterminate umbel and each consists of three sepals, three yellow petals, and about 18 carpels surrounded by numerous stamens and staminodia. The androecium is centrifugally developed, and the last-formed members are staminodial; it is supplied by branching vascular systems. Carpels arise almost simultaneously, and a prominent residual floral apex remains. The carpels are partially conduplicately closed and are also primitive in possessing laminar placentation and in lacking differentiation of a style. The gynoecium is essentially apocarpous, but there are slight fusions of adjacent carpels near their ventral margins where they are attached to the receptacle. It is suggested that the Limnocharis flower is the most primitive in the family. 相似文献
