Summary The cells of Lactobacillus casei were adsorbed to Poraver, foam glass particles pretreated with polyethylenimine (PEI). Exposure of cells for a relatively short period to Poraver beads coated with a high concentration of PEI resulted in maximal adsorption with good retention of metabolic activity. The immobilized cells were tested in packed-bed and stirred-tank reactors for lactic acid production. Stirred-tank operations were more effective in terms of productivity but the support was sensitive to attrition. The beads exhibited good mechanical stability to withstand pressure in the packed-bed reactor. Correspondence to: Bo Mattiasson  相似文献

Deuterium oxide, dimethylsulfoxide (Me2SO) and heat shock treatment were all significantly effective at baro-injury as measured by plating efficiency after decompression. The content of unfreezable cell water was observed to increase during heat treatment, and this increase was associated with increase in viability.  相似文献

Two hundred and eleven dogs (including strictly house and stray dogs) and 170 cattle in and around the city of Madras, India were screened for the presence of dermatophytosis. 106 strains of dermatophytes (89 strains from dogs and 17 strains from bovines) were isolated. 57/106 strains were Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. mentagrophytes and 42/106 strains were of the Microsporum gypseum complex. 5 strains of T. rubrum and 2 strains of T. simii were also obtained in culture. A predominance of M. gypseum complex isolates was recorded in stray dogs and cattle and T. mentagrophytes var. mentagrophytes and T. rubrum in strictly house dogs. The family history of the owners of the most of the dogs had clear records of dermatophytosis. Further, the owners of the 11 dogs that yielded T. mentagrophytes var. mentagrophytes had either tinea corporis or tinea pedis. The etiological agent of all the 11 human cases was T. mentagrophytes var. interdigitale. Similarly the owners of 4 of the 5 dogs that yielded T. rubrum were known T. rubrum patients. All these patients responded to oral griseofulvin or ketaconozole, but the recurrence of lesions was noted with the cessation of treatment. None of the patients had onychomycosis and the family history of all the patients revealed no reports of T. rubrum infections. The pet dogs were presumed to be the source of re-infection. Reversed transmission of dermatophytes from humans to animals may be the reason for the selective predominance of these organisms in strictly house dogs. They also may act as sources of reinfection. Most of the animals had small, occult, scattered lesions. These lesions may either go unnoticed or are ignored by the owners of the animals. The taxonomic status of T. mentagrophytes var. mentagrophytes and T. mentagrophytes var. interdigitale was aligned to their teleomorph Arthroderma vanbreuseghemii. Our study suggests that the periodic screening and medication of all live-stock are essential for the prevention and management of the public health problem caused by dermatophytes. Three types of diaphragms are produced in regular sequence by the basal intercalary meristem in the leaf of Sparganium eurycarpum Engelm. (Sparganiaceae). They bridge compartments formed by the collapse and disintegration of rib meristem derivatives. The adaptive nature of diaphragms, intercalary meristems, and linear photosynthetic organs is considered for emergent aquatic plants.  相似文献

Summary The reproductive development of Rhododendron macgregoriae F.v.M., Section Vireya (Ericaceae) has been followed from 10 days before anthesis to the production of mature germinable seeds about 145 days after anthesis. The species is self-compatible but shows both protandry and physical separation of pollen from the receptive stigma. Pollen is mature and viable from shortly before anthesis until the corolla and attached anthers abscise some 9–12 days after the flowers open. Spontaneous dehiscence, however, occurs mostly in the first few days after opening. The stigma becomes receptive 6–7 days after anthesis, and nectar is produced at this time. Female gametophytes are not mature until about 10 days after anthesis. Fertilization occurs about 6–7 days after pollination, and although the endosperm commences development immediately, development of the embryo proper does not begin until some 40–45 days later. Pollinations made with fresh pollen between 5 and 14 days after anthesis were successful, but those made on dry stigmas in the first 4 days after anthesis, or on senescing pistils 21 days after anthesis, gave little or no seed set. In nature, autogamy is probably uncommon, the majority of pollinations are likely to be geitonogamous, but there is considerable potential for outcrossing.  相似文献

The relationship of suppressor cell numbers and function to virus-specific IgE response was determined in 72 infants with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection. Monoclonal antibodies to membrane antigens were used to enumerate OKT4 and OKT8 antigen-positive cells, and suppressor cell function as quantitated by the degree of suppression of lymphocyte mitogenesis induced by incubation of lymphocyte cultures with histamine. Patients with bronchiolitis had fewer OKT8-positive cells during convalescence than patients with other forms of illness due to RSV (p less than 0.05). An inverse correlation of OKT8-positive cell numbers and peak IgE titers was observed (p less than 0.01). Histamine-induced suppression was also reduced in patients with bronchiolitis (p less than 0.05). In patients with repeated infection, improved histamine-induced suppression was associated with reduced virus-specific IgE titers and the absence of wheezing. Defects in immunoregulation may underlie previously recognized immunologic and pharmacologic abnormalities in patients with bronchiolitis.  相似文献

Summary Experiments were designed to test whether or not the 24-h core temperature fluctuations in week-old rat pups are of endogenous origin. Lean (Fa/-) Zucker rat pups born on the same day to mothers maintained in two different colonies with light/dark cycles 12 h out of phase with each other were mother-reared through the first 3–4 days of life and then artificially reared simultaneously in constant dim light. Continuous, automatic measurement of core temperature and oxygen consumption during artificial rearing showed clear 24-h rhythms in 5- to 8-day-old pups. Each rhythm reached a daily minimum at a time corresponding to the beginning of the light period in the colony of origin. The amplitude of these rhythms did not diminish during artificial rearing, nor did the phase difference between the rhythms of pups originating in the two colonies systematically change. The persistent 12-h phase differences between these two groups of pups prove that the observed rhythms are not caused by exogenous stimuli. Apo and holo forms of lactoferrin (LF) from caprine and bovine species have been characterized and compared with regard to the structural stability determined by thermal denaturation temperature values (T m), at pH 2.0–8.0. The bovine lactoferrin (bLF) showed highest thermal stability with a T m of 90 ± 1°C at pH 7.0 whereas caprine lactoferrin (cLF) showed a lower T m value 68 ± 1°C. The holo form was much more stable than the apo form for the bLF as compared to cLF. When pH was gradually reduced to 3.0, the T m values of both holo bLF and holo cLF were reduced showing T m values of 49 ± 1 and 40 ± 1°C, respectively. Both apo and holo forms of cLF and bLF were found to be most stable at pH 7.0. A significant loss in the iron content of both holo and apo forms of the cLF and bLF was observed when pH was decreased from 7.0 to 2.0. At the same time a gradual unfolding of the apo and holo forms of both cLF and bLF was shown by maximum exposure of hydrophobic regions at pH 3.0. This was supported with a loss in α-helix structure together with an increase in the content of unordered (aperiodic) structure, while β structure seemed unchanged at all pH values. Since LF is used today as fortifier in many products, like infant formulas and exerts many biological functions in human, the structural changes, iron binding and release affected by pH and thermal denaturation temperature are important factors to be clarified for more than the bovine species.  相似文献
