Males of the hermit crab Pagurus filholi perform precopulatory guarding behavior, and solitary males often show aggressive behavior to take away guarded females.
Males behave coercively while guarding females, so direct mate choice by females seems difficult in such a situation. By performing
several experiments we examined possible indirect female choice of hermit crab. Males were attached to a shell by their left
cheliped to look like guarding pairs (fake guarding pairs). The shells were filled with cotton containing either seawater
or pheromone water. The fake guarding pair with only seawater caused male–male combat in 60% of trials whereas with pheromone
water combats occurred in 88% of trials. Mean duration of male–male combat was significantly longer in trials with drops of
seawater containing pheromones than in those without pheromones. These results suggest guarding pairs themselves cause male–male
combat by visual stimulation, that female sex pheromones have further significant function in the recognition of guarding
pairs and intensification of male–male combat, and that females release sex pheromones while they are guarded. As a result
of the combat, the larger male ended up guarding a female. This strongly suggests that females choose males indirectly by
exploiting male–male competition induced by sex pheromones under male coercive behavior. 相似文献

Recent studies showed that small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) and Piwi-interacting RNA (piRNA) in mammalian germ cells play important roles in retrotransposon silencing and gametogenesis. However, subsequent contribution of those small RNAs to early mammalian development remains poorly understood. We investigated the expression profiles of small RNAs in mouse metaphase II oocytes, 8–16-cell stage embryos, blastocysts and the pluripotent inner cell mass (ICM) using high-throughput pyrosequencing. Here, we show that during pre-implantation development a major small RNA class changes from retrotransposon-derived small RNAs containing siRNAs and piRNAs to zygotically synthesized microRNAs (miRNAs). Some siRNAs and piRNAs are transiently upregulated and directed against specific retrotransposon classes. We also identified miRNAs expression profiles characteristic of the ICM and trophectoderm (TE) cells. A simple and highly sensitive high-performance liquid chromatography procedure was developed for the determination of carnosine in urine. Carnosine was derivatized with 4-(5,6-dimethoxy-2-phthalimidinyl)-2-methoxyphenylsulfonyl chloride at 70 °C for 15 min in borate buffer (20 mmol l?1, pH 9.0) to produce fluorescent sulfonamides. After hydrolysis of the reaction mixture with formic acid at 100 °C for 15 min, the fluorescent derivative of carnosine was separated on a reversed-phase column with a linear gradient elution using solvents of (A) acetate buffer (0.1 mmol l?1, pH 7.0) and (B) acetonitrile at a flow-rate of 1.0 ml/min and was detected at excitation and emission wavelengths of 318 and 400 nm, respectively. The detection limit of carnosine was 4 fmol at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. The within-day and day-to-day relative standard deviations were 2.7–4.6% and 0.4–5.2%, respectively. We studied particle capture using video‐microscopy in two gymnolaemates, the marine cheilostome Electra pilosa and the freshwater ctenostome Paludicella articulata, and three phylactolaemates, Fredericella sultana with a circular funnel‐shaped lophophore, and Cristatella mucedo and Lophophus crystallinus, both with a horseshoe‐shaped lophophore. The video‐microscope observations along with studies of lophophore morphology and ultrastructure indicated that phylactolaemate and gymnolaemate bryozoans with a diversity of lophophore shapes rely on the same basic structures and mechanisms for particle capture. A spray administration of ivermectin was evaluated for the treatment of pinworm infection in mice. In this study, a spray of 0.1% ivermectin injectable solution over the entire cage once a week, for three consecutive weeks (one cycle treatment), was effective in eradicating both Syphacia obvelata and Aspiculuris tetraptera from mice under experimental conditions. In addition, no acute toxicity was observed in 105 mothers or 687 neonates treated with ivermectin, indicating that ivermectin does not affect murine reproduction. Finally, we attempted to eradicate pinworms from infected mice in our institute using this method. Two cycles of treatment were administered, with a two-week pause between cycles, resulting in complete eradication for at least one year. Treating mouse colonies with spray ivermectin is inexpensive, safe, requires very little labor and is very effective at eradicating pinworms from mice. 相似文献
