Sexual conflict can produce several evolutionary outcomes, one of which is female-limited trait polymorphism. We examine the African bat bug Afrocimex constrictus (Cimicidae), a species where both sexes are subjected to traumatic intromission from males. We show that males possess female genital structures that in related species ameliorate the costs of traumatic insemination. Moreover, the male form of these structures differs morphologically from the standard female form. Examination of females in our isolated study population revealed a discrete polymorphism in female genitalia. Some females had the typical cimicid form, while others had genitalia that more closely resembled the distinctive male form. Males, as well as females with the distinctive male form, experienced fewer traumatic copulations than the typical female morph. We propose that some females mimic the bizarre male condition in order to reduce the frequency of costly traumatic inseminations. To our knowledge this is the first example of a distinct female-limited genital polymorphism: its nature, as well as its association with traumatic sexual interactions, strongly suggests that sexual conflict underpins this unique phenomenon. 相似文献

Apical junctional complex (AJC) plays a vital role in regulation of epithelial barrier function. Disassembly of the AJC is observed in diverse physiological and pathological states; however, mechanisms governing this process are not well understood. We previously reported that the AJC disassembly is driven by the formation of apical contractile acto-myosin rings. In the present study, we analyzed the signaling pathways regulating acto-myosin-dependent disruption of AJC by using a model of extracellular calcium depletion. Pharmacological inhibition analysis revealed a critical role of Rho-associated kinase (ROCK) in AJC disassembly in calcium-depleted epithelial cells. Furthermore, small interfering RNA (siRNA)-mediated knockdown of ROCK-II, but not ROCK-I, attenuated the disruption of the AJC. Interestingly, AJC disassembly was not dependent on myosin light chain kinase and myosin phosphatase. Calcium depletion resulted in activation of Rho GTPase and transient colocalization of Rho with internalized AJC proteins. Pharmacological inhibition of Rho prevented AJC disassembly. Additionally, Rho guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF)-H1 translocated to contractile F-actin rings after calcium depletion, and siRNA-mediated depletion of GEF-H1 inhibited AJC disassembly. Thus, our findings demonstrate a central role of the GEF-H1/Rho/ROCK-II signaling pathway in the disassembly of AJC in epithelial cells. 相似文献

Approaching living systems, aqueous solutions are appropriate to characterize antioxidants, whereas the frequently used standard 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) is insoluble in water. Therefore, mixed water-ethanol solvents were investigated using the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Two forms of DPPH were identified: at higher ethanol ratios a quintet spectrum characteristic of solutions, and at lower ratios, a singlet spectrum typical for solid DPPH, were found. Mixed solvents with 0-50% (v/v) water reproduced the same antioxidant equivalent points well and the reaction rate between DPPH and the antioxidant may increase considerably with increasing water ratios, as demonstrated using vitamin E as an antioxidant. But at still higher water ratios (70-90% (v/v)) the antioxidant activities dropped, since a part of the DPPH in the aggregated form does not react sufficiently with the antioxidants. Local environmental and ecological conditions are commonly expected to result in local adaptation, although there are few examples of variation in phenotypic selection across continent‐wide spatial scales. We collected standardized data on selection with respect to the highly variable plumage coloration of pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca Pall.) males from 17 populations across the species' breeding range. The observed selection on multiple male coloration traits via the annual number of fledged young was generally relatively weak. The main aim of the present study, however, was to examine whether the current directional selection estimates are associated with distance to the sympatric area with the collared flycatcher (Ficedula albicollis Temminck), a sister species with which the pied flycatcher is showing character displacement. This pattern was expected because plumage traits in male pied flycatchers are changing with the distance to these areas of sympatry. However, we did not find such a pattern in current selection on coloration. There were no associations between current directional selection on ornamentation and latitude or longitude either. Interestingly, current selection on coloration traits was not associated with the observed mean plumage traits of the populations. Thus, there do not appear to be geographical gradients in current directional fecundity selection on male plumage ornamentation. The results of the present study do not support the idea that constant patterns in directional fecundity selection would play a major role in the maintenance of coloration among populations in this species. By contrast, the tendency for relatively weak mosaic‐like variation in selection among populations could reflect just a snapshot of temporally variable, potentially environment‐dependent, selection, as suggested by other studies in this system.
