In this paper we consider one method of mapping larger units identified from the spatial pattern of sequences of vegetation types. The basic data were presence/absence data for 6450 stands arranged in 90 transects. A second set of data was derived by averaging the species occurrences in non-overlapping groups of 5 stands. A divisive numerical classification was used to determine the primary vegetation units. In all, 5 different sets of primary types were derived, using different species suites, different sample sizes and different numerical methods. We briefly discuss the types identified and their spatial patterns in the area.Each of these types was then used to define a string of type-codes for every transect so that each transect represents a sample from the landscape containing information on the frequency and spatial distribution of the primary vegetation types. The transects may be classified using a Levenshtein dissimilarity measure and agglomerative hierarchical classification, giving 5 analyses of transects, one for each of the primary types discussed above. We then examine these transect classifications to investigate the stability of the vegetation landspace patterns under changes in species used for the primary classification, in size of sample unit and in method of primary classifications. There is a considerable degree of stability in the results. However it seems with this vegetation that the tree species and non-tree species have considerable independence. We also indicate some problems with this approach and some possible extensions.  相似文献

Summary Mutations in the protein transthyretin cause amyloidosis involving the heart, peripheral nerves, and other organs. A family from West Virginia developed an unusually aggressive form of widespread transthyretin amyloidosis. Single-strand conformation polymorphism analysis revealed a variant in the transthyretin gene, which was found on sequencing to be a TC transversion at position 2 of codon 55, corresponding to a Leu Pro substitution. The variant sequence was confirmed by restriction analysis and polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-primer introduced restriction analysis.  相似文献

Summary The gene products of the ugp operon of Escherichia coli are responsible for the uptake of sn-glycerol-3-phosphate and certain glycerophosphodiesters. The regulation of ugp is mainly phoBR-dependent. Significant expression, however, can be observed even in the presence of high concentrations of phosphate, a condition which normally completely represses pho expression. Pho-independent ugp expression was found to be derepressed during the late logarithmic growth phase due to carbon starvation. Among different carbon sources tested, glucose caused the most complete repression. Addition of cAMP prevented glucose repression, indicating that a cAMP-CRP control mechanism may be directly or indirectly involved in the carbon-starvation response. This conclusion is supported by the fact that pho-independent ugp expression correlated with the presence of the cya and crp gene products.  相似文献

Body size plays an important role in the outcome of aggressive encounters between males of the symbiotic freshwater miteUnionicola formosa. Since intruding males displace resident males as often as resident males successfully defend their territory (mantle cavity of a mussel), resident males do not hold a competitive advantage during male-male aggressive encounters. Summary In order to assess the capacity of neural crest from different sources to participate in thymic development, neural crest from selected axial levels was transplanted unilaterally from quail donors to the region in chick hosts from which neural crest cells normaly migrate to interact with the primordial thymus. The greatest representation of donor cells was observed after isotopic transplantation and when donor tissue was taken from the hyoid and mesencephalic regions of the neural crest. The capacity for transplants to contribute cells decreased both anteriorly and posteriorly, so that neural crest close to the usual origin of mesenchyme-producing cells contributed a larger number of donor cells around the developing thymus than neural crest from anterior and posterior regions. Cells from the transplant were inserted as an addition to the host chick cells. Thus, a special relationship and capacity for interaction in thymic development is expressed by neural crest at usual levels over a limited span of axial regions, but to some extent by all regions. This study has established that the capacity for neural crest cells from different axial levels to interact with developing organs is not uniform, but may vary, depending upon the nature of the interaction with a particular organ.This study was supported by Grant No. 2332, The Council for Tobacco Research, USA, Inc.  相似文献

Summary The relationship between granule density, protein content, and Ca and S contents were studied in two secretory granule fractions, from parotid glands of the rat, previously shown to constitute different stages in granule maturation. The density of the lighter fraction was between 1.133 and 1.142 g/ml, while that of the heavier fraction was greater than 1.142 g/ml. The mean protein content of the denser granules was 12% greater than that of the lighter granules (P<0.03), while the dry-mass elemental concentrations in the two granule fractions were unchanged. These results indicate that protein is added to granules during the maturation process (presumably by vesicular traffic), and that the resulting increase in granule density is not driven simply by decrease in water content and/or increased concentrations of inorganic Ca or S in the granules. The elemental concentration values also indicate that the diffusible elements permeate the granule membrane during the fractionation procedures.  相似文献

Summary We have analysed two duplications of the X chromosome in male patients using chromosome replication and DNA methylation patterns as determinants of the functional status of the duplicated segments. In both cases, the large duplicated regions, Xq12-q22 and Xq26.3-qter, were not inactivated. A review of previously reported male cases revealed that these duplications were also not subject to inactivation. Taken together, the examined duplications cover almost the entire X chromosome except the pericentromeric region and Xq25–26. Thus, most regions of the X chromosome can be present in two functional copies without lethal consequences.  相似文献

Fragments of ascidian eggs, but at random in any plane and ranging in size from 10 to 90% of the total egg volume, displayed the electrical characteristics of the intact egg, having a resting potential of -86 mV and giving rise to an action potential upon stimulation by electrical current injection. Following insemination, the fragments generated fertilization potentials, comparable to those of intact eggs, although the repolarization phase was shorter. Our data show that there are sufficient ion channels throughout the egg surface to generate action potentials and fertilization potentials in excised egg fragments, irrespective of their global origin. Furthermore, the fertilizing spermatozoon is capable of activating fertilization channels in areas of the egg plasma membrane not destined for sperm entry.  相似文献

Past research on kernel growth in wheat (Triticum aestivum) has shown that the kernel itself largely regulates the influx of sucrose for consequent starch synthesis in the endosperm of the grain. The first step in the conversion of sucrose to starch is catalyzed by sucrose synthase (EC 2.4.13). Sucrose synthase activity was assayed in developing endosperms from kernels differing in growth rate and in maximum dry weight accumulation. From 10 to 22 days after anthesis, sucrose synthase activity per wheat endosperm remained constant with respect to time in all grains. However, kernels which had higher rates of kernel growth and which achieved greatest maximum weight had consistently and significantly higher sucrose synthase activities at any point in time than did kernels with slower rates of dry matter accumulation and lower maximum weight. In addition, larger kernels had a significantly greater amount of water in which this activity could be expressed. Although the results do not implicate sucrose synthase as the “rate limiting” enzyme in wheat kernel growth, they do emphasize the importance of sucrose synthase activity in larger or more rapidly growing kernels, as compared to smaller slower growing kernels.  相似文献
