Consequences of thermal change on the myofibrillar ATPase of five freshwater teleosts

Myofibrillar ATPase activity was measured in the epaxial musculature of five freshwater species of fish acclimated to extremes of temperature within their tolerance ranges. Changes in the enzyme activity were apparent in carp, tench and roach, cold acclimated fish (10°C) having higher enzyme activity levels than hot acclimated fish (28°C). Such changes were not apparent in eels or brook trout. Alteration of the enzyme activity took less than 4 weeks, and was totally reversible. This suggests that seasonal adaptation to environmental temperatures is possible, thus maintaining locomotory efficiency.     

Is group progressive relaxation training as effective with hyperactive children as individual EMG biofeedback treatment?

This study examined whether group progressive relaxation training was as effective as individual EMG biofeedback training in facilitating the academic achievement and self-control of 45 hyperactive elementary school children. Academic achievement was assessed with the Gates-MacGinities Reading Tests, and self-control was measured with the Nowicki-Strickland and the Teacher Rating scales. Eight sessions were scheduled at weekly intervals. Progressive relaxation was conducted in groups of seven or eight and was induced with a commercial audiocassette program. EMG training augmented frontalis biofeedback with those taped exercises. A placebo group listened to taped children's stories. Multivariate analysis of variance indicated no significant differences among the three contrast groups when all dependent variables were considered together. However, univariate F values and discriminant analysis disclosed locus of control to be significantly more internal for the progressive relaxation condition. Also, differences between the two relaxation and the placebo groups, though not statistically significant, were all in the expected direction. While the relative efficacy of group progressive relaxation could not be established conclusively, the data appeared sufficiently positive to warrant further investigation of this cost-effective prospective intervention.The opinions expressed by the authors are not necessarily those of their respective institutions.     

A small one-band paracentric inversion inv (4) (p15.3p16.3).

A neonate with aniridia was found to have a one band paracentric inversion of the short arm of chromosome 4. This was initially difficult to interpret on high resolution banding. The inversion was present in three generations of the family.     

Adaptive variation in sex determination in a crustacean, Gammarus duebeni

In some animals sex is determined after conception by environmental factors (environmental sex determination. ESD). In the amphipod Gammarus duebeni sex is reportedly determined by photoperiod: there is a higher proportion of males in broods reared under long-day than under short-day photoperiods. It has been proposed that this is an adaptive response to seasonal population dynamics. A test of the hypothesis would be to demonstrate changes in the degree to which sex is determined by the environment in populations from different latitudes with different dynamics. This study reports such a test. Environmental response is significantly less strong in a southern population with a long breeding season than in a northern one in which breeding is seasonally restricted. Moreover, the threshold of the ESD cue for male or female determination is not defined when the breeding season is weakly seasonal. There is a broad correlation between latitude (and hence breeding seasonality) and the strength of ESD response across a series of population studies. Similarities between the Gammarus system of sex determination and that of the Atlantic silverside Menidia menidia, a fish with thermal ESD, are discussed.     

The localisation of an Mr 74,000 major chromatin antigen on native salivary chromosomes of Drosophila melanogaster

An antigen making a major contribution to the immune response to Drosophila melanogaster chromatin resides primarily on a nonhistone charge-class family of proteins of Mr 74,000. Immunofluorescence detects this antigen at interbands, puffs and diffuse bands of D. melanogaster salivary chromosomes isolated without exposure to acid fixatives, and on nucleoplasmic ribonucleoprotein droplets. In the electron microscope, gold labelling reveals the binding of monoclonal antibodies specific for the antigen at chromosomal loci generally bearing putative ribonucleoprotein (RNP) particles. However, the locus 3C 11–12 is remarkable in that it bears putative RNP particles but is virtually unlabelled, suggesting protein specificity at different active loci.     

Primary productivity of the River Ely,South Wales,U.K.

The present study was carried out on the non-tidal reaches of the River Ely, South Wales, from October 1979 to October 1980. The seasonal variations of the chlorophyll-a content of the phytoplankton was unimodal with one maximum in May and a minimum in December. The chlorophyll-a content varied from 0.277 to 41.259 mg m^?3. The primary productivity showed a bimodal seasonal distribution with two maxima in May and September and lower values throughout the remainder of the year, particularly in winter. The value for the primary productivity varied from 0.269 to 24.302 mg C m^?3 h^?1. A positive correlation was obtained between chlorophyll-a content and primary productivity. The seasonal distribution of the dominant algal species and the saprobity of the River Ely were also studied. The diatom species almost showed a similar seasonal periodicity. Their concentrations were low during the winter months and high during most of the spring and summer months. Many of the dominant diatom species found in the phytoplankton populations were either considered by the other authors as saprobic (Nitzchia palea) or as inhabitants of eutrophic waters (Gomphonema parvulum, Navicula cryptocephala and Synedra ulna). Chlamydomonas spp. were the most abundant green algae followed by Chlorella vulgaris. The effect of sewage effluent disposal and cattle excreta at three of the sampling sites might partly explain the presence of high Chlamydomonas spp. populations at those sites. Physical factors (low flow rates, high transparency and water temperature) and organic pollution at some sampling sites seemed to play an important role in increasing the number of algal species during spring and summer. The non-tidal reaches of the River Ely were found to be β-mesosaprobic above and below Station 5 and α-mesosaprobic at the latter station and therefore, the river can be considered as polluted at Station 5 and mildly polluted at the others.
