Neomorphic, membrane‐associated skeletal rods are found in disparate vertebrate lineages, but their evolution is poorly understood. Here we show that one of these elements—the calcar of bats (Chiroptera)—is a skeletal novelty that has anatomically diversified. Comparisons of evolutionary models of calcar length and corresponding disparity‐through‐time analyses indicate that the calcar diversified early in the evolutionary history of Chiroptera, as bats phylogenetically diversified after evolving the capacity for flight. This interspecific variation in calcar length and its relative proportion to tibia and forearm length is of functional relevance to flight‐related behaviors. We also find that the calcar varies in its tissue composition among bats, which might affect its response to mechanical loading. We confirm the presence of a synovial joint at the articulation between the calcar and the calcaneus in some species, which suggests the calcar has a kinematic functional role. Collectively, this functionally relevant variation suggests that adaptive advantages provided by the calcar led to its anatomical diversification. Our results demonstrate that novel skeletal additions can become integrated into vertebrate body plans and subsequently evolve into a variety of forms, potentially impacting clade diversification by expanding the available morphological space into which organisms can evolve.  相似文献

Mechanical loading of skeletal muscle results in molecular and phenotypic adaptations typified by enhanced muscle size. Studies on humans are limited by the need for repeated sampling, and studies on animals have methodological and ethical limitations. In this investigation, three-dimensional skeletal muscle was tissue-engineered utilizing the murine cell line C2C12, which bears resemblance to native tissue and benefits from the advantages of conventional in vitro experiments. The work aimed to determine if mechanical loading induced an anabolic hypertrophic response, akin to that described in vivo after mechanical loading in the form of resistance exercise. Specifically, we temporally investigated candidate gene expression and Akt-mechanistic target of rapamycin 1 signalling along with myotube growth and tissue function. Mechanical loading (construct length increase of 15%) significantly increased insulin-like growth factor-1 and MMP-2 messenger RNA expression 21 hr after overload, and the levels of the atrophic gene MAFbx were significantly downregulated 45 hr after mechanical overload. In addition, p70S6 kinase and 4EBP-1 phosphorylation were upregulated immediately after mechanical overload. Maximal contractile force was augmented 45 hr after load with a 265% increase in force, alongside significant hypertrophy of the myotubes within the engineered muscle. Overall, mechanical loading of tissue-engineered skeletal muscle induced hypertrophy and improved force production.  相似文献

Myotomal slow-oxidative muscle (SM) powers continuous swimming and generates heat needed to maintain elevated locomotor muscle temperatures (regional endothermy) in tunas. This study describes how the amount and distribution of myotomal SM increases with fish size and age in juvenile yellowfin tuna Thunnus albacares in relationship to the development of regional endothermy. In T. albacares juveniles 40–74 mm fork length (LF; n = 23) raised from fertilised eggs at the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission Achotines Laboratory in Panama and larger juveniles (118–344 mm LF; n = 5) collected by hook and line off of Oahu, Hawaii, USA, SM was identified by histochemical staining for the mitochondrial enzyme succinic dehydrogenase or by colour (in the two largest individuals). The cross-sectional area of myotomal SM at 60% LF, a position with maximal percentage of SM in larger T. albacares, increased exponentially with LF. The percentage of total cross-sectional area composed of SM at 60% LF increased significantly with both LF and age, suggesting that SM growth occurs throughout the size range of T. albacares juveniles studied. In addition, the percentage of SM at 60% LF that is medial increased asymptotically with LF. The increases in amount of SM and medial SM, along with the development of the counter-current heat-exchanger blood vessels that retain heat, allow larger tuna juveniles to maintain elevated and relatively stable SM temperatures, facilitating range expansion into cooler waters.  相似文献

Group membership was modified among 4 gorilla groups at Zoo Atlanta in an attempt to increase compatibility and sexual behavior. The modifications ultimately moved 7 adult females among the groups. The moves were made by individually introducing the new group members to the old members, resulting in 18 total introductions. Several individual and social behaviors differed in the two conditions. The most obvious change was a temporary increase in aggressive display behaviors, as well as an increase in contact and social examination, in the postmovement condition. Additionally, the individual behaviors of travelling and eating increased after the introductions, while resting decreased. Other self-maintenance behaviors did not change. Finally, there was an increase in time mothers and offspring spent closer to one another following the moves. Previous research and anecdotal evidence suggest that gorillas respond to changes in group membership with aggression; these data support and extend those data to different age/sex groups, postmovement trends in behavior, and other aspects of gorilla behavior. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Abstract sodC , encoding [Cu,Zn]-cofactored Superoxide dismutase, once thought to be virtually confined to eukaryotes, has now been described in many Gram-negative pathogens that have their primary niche of colonization in the upper respiratory tract. Their role in host-parasite interactive biology is unknown. We here show that members of the major human and animal enteric pathogenic species Salmonella harbour a version of sodC most closely resembling that found in Brucella abortus . The enzyme it encodes is a novel candidate determinant of virulence in Salmonella , an intracellular pathogen potentially exposed to toxic oxygen free radicals within its intracellular niche.  相似文献

Abstract Depending on the culture conditions, Pyrodictium occultum cells revealed two different types of fibers with significant differences in their width in the electron microscope. During growth on elemental sulfur preferentially fibres with a diameter of about 23 nm (type I) were produced. When elemental sulfur was substituted by thiosulfate fibers with a diameter of around 15 nm (type II), were the main appendages. Both types form hollow cylinders consisting of helically arranged sub-units with a wall thickness of 2–3 nm. A triple- layered unit membrane could not be found.  相似文献

Previous studies have compared grassland restoration techniques based on resulting species richness and composition. However, none have determined if different techniques generate different plant distributions in space, which may further impact restoration success. This study tests if there are quadrat‐scale (1 m2) differences between paired drilled and broadcast plantings in diversity, composition, and plant distributions. Higher competition intensity in and more contiguous spaces between rows in drill‐seeded restorations were hypothesized to result in larger patches of native grasses and exotic species. Two paired drill‐ and broadcast‐seeded plantings were sampled in June 2007 in Iowa, U.S.A. Within 10 quadrats in each planting, we measured species abundance with point intercept sampling and plant distributions by dividing the quadrat into 64 cells and recording the most abundant species in each cell. Drilled and broadcast plantings at both sites had similar Simpson’s diversity and evenness. However, the effect of planting type on species richness, composition, and plant distribution was site dependent. Native warm‐season grasses in one site, and exotic species in the second, occupied more space and were distributed in larger patches in drilled plantings. Furthermore, drilled canopies consistently captured more light than broadcast canopies. This suggests that initial differences in seed placement can affect resulting plant distributions, resource use, and potentially long‐term species turnover. Mechanisms structuring vegetation in these communities need to be further investigated to determine if this approach can provide more information on long‐term diversity maintenance in restorations than traditional measures.  相似文献

Marine tubificids are abundant and diverse in the carbonate sediments of Bermuda, as well as in many other tropical and subtropical locations. Recently, during microscopic observations of living specimens, crystal-like structures were observed attached to the coelomic peritoneum and in the coelomic cavity of some Bermuda species, including phallodrilines of the genera Aktedrilus and Pectinodrilus,and a rhyacodriline of the genus Heterodrilus. Similar structures were not seen in tubificid species of Thallasodrilides and other limnodriloidines, a second species of Heterodrilus, a tubificine of the genusTubificoides, a phallodriline of the genus Bathydrilus,nor in a number of marine enchytraeid genera and species found in Bermuda. The crystal-like structures have two needle arms, each about 5–10 m long and about 0.5 m in diameter, meeting at an obtuse angle. At the junction of the arms, there is a small membrane-bound `knob', about 1 m in diameter, which may be continuous with the coelomic peritoneum. The numbers of `crystals' per individual worm are estimated at 100–400 per body segment, or well over 2 × 103 in an adult worm. `Crystals' are found: throughout the length of the worms, in all individuals of species in which `crystals' occur, and over the range of environmental conditions where these species are found in Bermuda. Simple digestions with hypochlorite, weak and dilute acids, and staining with nuclear and cytoplasmic stains indicate that the composition of the knob is organic and the arms inorganic. The fluorescent tracer Calcein (Sigma) was not incorporated into any structures during a 24-h bath incubation of living worms, and the `crystals' do not show birefringence when viewed between crossed polarizing filters. These last two results do not support an hypothesis that these are calcium carbonate `crystals'. Geographically, the crystal-like structures are widespread, and have also been observed in a species of immature (unidentified) marine tubificid from Rottnest Island, Western Australia.  相似文献

To elicit the roles of cytokinins in the regulation of maturation of Pinus radiata D. Don, the spectrum of endogenous cytokinins and their concentration in the mature buds were analysed using double-solvent extraction, column complex purification and separation, a novel immunoaffinity purification method, normal and reverse phase high-pressure liquid chromatography, enzymatic treatment, radioimmunoassay and electrospray MS/MS spectrometry. We have isolated two novel cytokinin glycosides whose proposed structures are isopentenyladenine-9-(glucopyranosyl riboside), dihydrozeatin-9-(glucopyranosyl riboside) and confirmed the presence of zeatin-9-(glucopyranosyl riboside). We have also found the presence of novel phosphorylated forms of these 3 cytokinin ribosyl-linked glycosides. Quantitative analyses revealed that the cytokinin ribosyl-linked glycosides predominate in P. radiata mature buds. Although cytokinin free base, riboside and nucleotide forms are also present, we could find no evidence of the traditional cytokinin O - or N-glucosides in the conifer buds. Thus, cytokinin metabolism in mature buds of P. radiata is very different from other species previously examined.  相似文献
