In light of the growing concern over the potentially devastating impacts on biodiversity and food security of climate change
and the massively growing world population, taking action to conserve crop wild relatives (CWR), is no longer an option —
it is a priority. Crop wild relatives are species closely related to crops, including their progenitors, many of which have
the potential to contribute beneficial traits to crops, such as pest or disease resistance, yield improvement or stability.
They are a critical component of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA), have already made major contributions
to crop production and are vital for future food security; their systematic conservation in ways that ensure their continuing
availability for use is therefore imperative. This is a complex, interdisciplinary, global issue that has been addressed by
various national and international initiatives. Drawing on the lessons learnt from these initiatives we can now propose a
global approach to CWR conservation, the key elements of which are: (1) estimating global CWR numbers, (2) assessment of the
global importance of CWR diversity, (3) current conservation status, (4) threats to CWR diversity, (5) systematic approaches
to CWR conservation, (6) CWR informatics, and (7) enhancing the use of CWR diversity. 相似文献

Copper may play an important role in the brain in aging and neurodegenerative diseases. We compare the active Cu uptake, Cu-containing enzyme levels, and total Cu distribution in the brains of young and aging mice. (67)Cu was administered intravenously to 2, 7-9, and 14 month old mice. Active uptake of (67)Cu in the brain was measured at 24 h by digital phosphor autoradiography. Cerebral superoxide dismutase-1 (SOD-1) and cytochrome-C oxidase subunit-1 (CCO-1) levels were analyzed by immunohistochemistry. The total Cu distribution in brain section was determined by imaging laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). In aging mice, active (67)Cu uptake and SOD-1 levels were significantly decreased in the brain, whereas blood (67)Cu and CCO-1 levels were similar for all mice, irrespective of age. Paradoxically, global Cu cerebral content was increased in aged mice, suggesting that regulation of active Cu uptake by the brain may be linked to total Cu levels in an attempt to maintain Cu homeostasis. However, focal areas of both decreased Cu uptake and Cu content were noted in the striatum and ventral cortex in aging mice. These focal areas of Cu deficit correspond to the regions of greatest reduction in SOD-1 in the aged mice. In aging, dysregulated Cu homeostasis may result in decreased SOD-1 levels, which may contribute to oxidative vulnerability of the aging brain. Coinfection of the same host cell by multiple viruses may lead to increased competition for limited cellular resources, thus reducing the fitness of an individual virus. Selection should favor viruses that can limit or prevent coinfection, and it is not surprising that many viruses have evolved mechanisms to do so. Here we explore whether coinfection is limited in the RNA bacteriophage 6 that infects Pseudomonas phaseolicola. We estimated the limit to coinfection in 6 by comparing the frequency of hybrids produced by two marked phage strains to that predicted by a mathematical model based on differing limits to coinfection. Our results provide an alternative method for estimating the limit to coinfection and confirm a previous estimate between two to three phages per host cell. In addition, our data reveal that the rate of coinfection at low phage densities may exceed that expected through random Poisson sampling. We discuss whether phage 6 has evolved an optimal limit that balances the costly and beneficial fitness effects associated with multiple infections. 相似文献

Native plant recovery following wildfires is of great concern to managers because of the potential for increased water run‐off and soil erosion associated with severely burned areas. Although postfire seeding with exotic grasses or cultivars of native grasses (seeded grasses) may mitigate the potential for increased run‐off and erosion, such treatments may also be detrimental to long‐term recovery of other native plant species. The degree to which seeded grasses dominate a site and reduce native plant diversity may be a function of the availability of resources such as nitrogen and light and differing abilities of native and seeded grasses to utilize available resources. We tested the hypothesis that seeded grasses have higher growth rates than native grasses when nitrogen and light availability is high in a greenhouse experiment. To determine how differing resource utilization strategies may affect distribution of native and seeded grasses across a burned landscape, we conducted botanical surveys after a wildfire in northern New Mexico, U.S.A., one and four years after the fire. In the greenhouse study we found seeded grasses to produce significantly more biomass than native grasses when nitrogen and light availability was high. Seeded grasses increased in cover from 1–4 years after the fire only in areas where total soil nitrogen was higher. Increased cover of seeded grasses did not affect recovery of native grasses, but it did lead to reduced native species richness at small scales. The potential negative long‐term consequences of seeding with exotic grasses should be considered in postfire rehabilitation treatments. 相似文献
