Zinc content of the gills of rainbow trout (S. gairdneri) after treatment with zinc solutions under normoxic and hypoxic conditions

Forty specimens of rainbow trout (54–127 g) were divided into 4 groups which were treated as follows: (a) normoxic clean water; (b) hypoxic clean water; (c) normoxic water with 10 ppm zinc for 10 h; (d) hypoxic water with 10 ppm zinc for 10 h. The zinc content was determined separately for each of the 4 gill arches on each side of the fish. Values for the zinc concentration were greater following the zinc treatments, but no significant difference between hypoxia and normoxia was observed. Differences in concentrations of zinc were found in different arches whether expressed per gram dry weight or per unit surface area of the secondary lamellae.     

SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPE OBSERVATINS ON ZOOSPORANGIAL ABSCISSION IN PHYCOPELTIS EPIPHYTON (CHLOROPHYA)1

Zoosporangial abscissin in asexually reproductive Phycopeltis epiphyon, Millardet, epiphytic on leaces of Osmanhus fragrans Loureiro and Sabal minor (Jacquin) Person, examined with scanning electron micrsscopy is described and compared with the process in related Cephaleuros virescens Kunze. The laeral wall of he zoosporangium-pedicel septum begins to rupure early in he abscission process and is followed by continued learing of the lateral wall and partial spliing of the septum. The zoosporangium remains attached in a hinge-like fashion to the pedicel by a portion of the lateral wall and septum. A centrally located protuberance emerges from wihin the septa of both the zoosporangium and pedicel, and together with a slight bulging of the septa, is involved in the final separation of the zoosporangium. Although there are differences in surface morphlogy of identical in P. the zoosporangia and the location of the exit pores, the process of abscission is identical in P. epiphyton and C. virescens.     

A paradigm for axonal transport

Axonal transport has been extensively studied for a period of 20–30 years, but there is still no general consensus concerning the mechanism by which this transport process operates. An important development in this regard is the recent studies in the physical biochemistry group in the Department of Biochemistry at Monash University where it has been demonstrated that ordered flows may be generated spontaneously in polymer systems under non-equilibeium conditions. The new phenomenon exhibits many novel features, particularly with respect to polymer transport, which bear marked similarity to the behaviour of components in axonal transport. This article sets out to essentiallybring to the attention of those in the neurosciences some of the properties of ordered structured flows in polymer solutions. These properties may generate a different view in the understanding of the mechanism of axonal transport.     

Spontaneous endocrine cure of gigantism due to pituitary apoplexy.

An 11 year old, tall boy presented with symptoms typical of pituitary apoplexy. A large necrotic and haemorrhagic tumour was removed, which was shown to be an adenoma secreting growth hormone and prolactin. Subsequent treatment comprised cranial irradiation and hormone replacement. Eighteen months after operation growth was static and plasma growth hormone and prolactin concentrations were undetectable. Treatment of pituitary apoplexy should comprise excision of the tumour and postoperative irradiation; such treatment after early recognition of the condition offers the best chance of preserving normal pituitary function in children with gigantism.     

Evidence for two conformational forms of monhistone protein BA which differ in their affinity for DNA

Nonhistone protein BA_free was purified from the 0.075 M NaCl/0.025 M $\text{EDTA}\text{pH}$ 8 extract of whole rat liver nuclei while protein BA_bound was isolated from the 0.05 M Na₂HPO₄/8 M urea/1% β-mercaptoethanol/pH 7.6 extract of dehistonized rat liver chromatin. Chromatin associated protein BA_bound was able to bind 60% of the [³H] DNA in a nitrocellulose filter binding assay while nucleoplasmic protein BA_free showed essentially no DNA binding activity. Circular dichroism analysis of the two forms of protein BA revealed substantial differences in their conformations. Protein BA_free was found to have an α-helix content of 41% while protein BA_bound displayed a spectrum more typical of unordered or β-turn structures.     

The identification of dimethylphenylarsine as a microbial metabolite using a simple method of chemofocusing

Candida humicola acts on benzenearsonic acid to produce dimethylphenylarsine, which was identified by mass spectroscopy following the chemofocusing of the volatile metabolite onto a mercuric chloride impregnated filter. The same technique established that trimethylarsine is the volatile metabolic product obtained from C. humicola treated with 4-NH₂-2-OHC₆H₃AsO(OH)₂ and (CH₃)₃AsO. Arsanilic acid, 4-NH₂C₆H₄AsO(OH)₂, is not metabolized to a volatile arsine.
