Wood density (Dt), an excellent predictor of mechanical properties, is typically viewed in relation to support against gravity, wind, snow, and other environmental forces. In contrast, we show the surprising extent to which variation in Dt and wood structure is linked to support against implosion by negative pressure in the xylem pipeline. The more drought-tolerant the plant, the more negative the xylem pressure can become without cavitation, and the greater the internal load on the xylem conduit walls. Accordingly, Dt was correlated with cavitation resistance. This trend was consistent with the maintenance of a safety factor from implosion by negative pressure: conduit wall span (b) and thickness (t) scaled so that (t/b)2 was proportional to cavitation resistance as required to avoid wall collapse. Unexpectedly, trends in Dt may be as much or more related to support of the xylem pipeline as to support of the plant.  相似文献

Chloroplast division is driven by a macromolecular complex containing components that are positioned on the cytosolic surface of the outer envelope, the stromal surface of the inner envelope, and in the intermembrane space. The only constituents of the division apparatus identified thus far are the tubulin-like proteins FtsZ1 and FtsZ2, which colocalize to rings at the plastid division site. However, the precise positioning of these rings relative to the envelope membranes and to each other has not been previously defined. Using newly isolated cDNAs with open reading frames longer than those reported previously, we demonstrate here that both FtsZ2 proteins in Arabidopsis, like FtsZ1 proteins, contain cleavable transit peptides that target them across the outer envelope membrane. To determine their topological arrangement, protease protection experiments designed to distinguish between stromal and intermembrane space localization were performed on both in vitro imported and endogenous forms of FtsZ1 and FtsZ2. Both proteins were shown to reside in the stromal compartment of the chloroplast, indicating that the FtsZ1- and FtsZ2-containing rings have similar topologies and may physically interact. Consistent with this hypothesis, double immunofluorescence labeling of various plastid division mutants revealed precise colocalization of FtsZ1 and FtsZ2, even when their levels and assembly patterns were perturbed. Overexpression of FtsZ2 in transgenic Arabidopsis inhibited plastid division in a dose-dependent manner, suggesting that the stoichiometry between FtsZ1 and FtsZ2 is an important aspect of their function. These studies raise new questions concerning the functional and evolutionary significance of two distinct but colocalized forms of FtsZ in plants and establish a revised framework within which to understand the molecular architecture of the plastid division apparatus in higher plants.  相似文献

Aim Few studies have explicitly considered the recurrent pattern of declining species diversity and increasing geographical range size that exists for numerous taxa across a variety of physical gradients. We extend Stevens’ [ Stevens, G.C. (1996) Journal of Biogeography, 23 , 149] work on Rapoport's bathymetric rule, using a more complete latitudinal assemblage of Northeast Pacific fishes and new data from Northwest Atlantic gastropods, to show that bathymetrical range size and species diversity are not causally linked. Location Fishes from the Northeast Pacific (0°–60° N) and gastropods from the Northwest Atlantic (0°–74° N) distributed from the surface to depths greater than 200 m. Methods Species pools were divided into three bathymetrical subgroups: (1) species restricted to shallow waters, between the surface and 200 m, (2) species that occurred in waters, both shallow and deep of 200 m, and (3) species restricted to waters deeper than 200 m. Median bathymetrical range size and total number of species were plotted against latitude (2° bins) using Stevens’ method, for the entire species pool and individual bathymetrical groups. Results For both fishes and gastropods, the apparent link between extratropical diversity and bathymetrical range size is an artefact resulting from the disproportionately high number of shallow restricted species in tropical latitudes, and the loss of these species in temperate latitudes. Furthermore, the extratropical gradient in gastropod diversity and bathymetrical range size are decoupled by approximately 15°, and while the latitudinal pattern for diversity is consistent across bathymetrical groups, median bathymetrical range size is highly irregular. Main conclusions These results suggests that functional groups can contribute disproportionately to patterns apparent at larger scales and that analysis of ecographical patterns by subregion is a novel approach that can help resolve debates over causality when patterns are seemingly coincident.  相似文献

In the last few years, there has been increasing interest in the physiological role of acylation-stimulating protein (ASP). Recent studies in rats and mice, in particular in C3 (−/−) mice that are ASP deficient, have advanced our understanding of the role of ASP. Of note, the background strain of the mice influences the phenotype of delayed postprandial triglyceride clearance in ASP-deficient mice. Administration of ASP in all types of lean and obese mice studied to date, however, enhances postprandial triglyceride clearance. On the other hand, regardless of the background strain, ASP-deficient mice demonstrate reduced body weight, reduced leptin and reduced adipose tissue mass, suggesting that ASP deficiency results in protection against development of obesity.In humans, a number of studies have examined the relationship between ASP, obesity, diabetes and dyslipidemia as well as the influence of diet, exercise and pharmacological therapy. While many of these studies have small subject numbers, interesting observations may help us to better understand the parameters that may influence ASP production and ASP action.The aim of the present review is to provide a comprehensive overview of the recent literature on ASP, with particular emphasis on those studies carried out in rodents and humans.  相似文献

The susceptibility of Helicobacter pylori to disinfectants was compared to that of Escherichia coli. H. pylori is more resistant than E. coli to chlorine and ozone but not monochloramine. Cross-cultural differences in the meaning and experience of the universal biologic phenomenon of the menopause have been well documented. Very few studies, however, have focused on the response to the midlife transition among ethnic minority women in the United States, and even fewer exist about Asian American women. This exploratory study compared the perceptions and experiences of the midlife transition among Japanese American and European American women. The midlife transition was viewed as a time of self-assurance, maturity, and taking comfort and satisfaction in oneself. Biologically, it was a marker of mortality. Similar to menses, marriage, and motherhood, menopause was viewed as the final identity transformation, but interpreted quite differently by the two ethnic groups. The findings of this study support the cross-cultural theories that emphasize the interaction of biology, society, age, gender, and acculturation in this universal female experience and suggest additional expansion of these theories to incorporate lifestyle choices that may affect the actual health consequences of female aging. The morphology of a bird's tail may result from compromisesbetween aerodynamic efficiency, phylogenetic constraints andselection for non-aerodynamic characteristics, such as mateattraction. A good example of a trait shaped by trade-offsbetween aerodynamic efficiency and reproductive benefits mediatedthrough female preference is the tail streamer of the barn swallow. Here we use a standardized task to measure the impactof manipulated tail streamer lengths on maneuvering flightin the barn swallow and in the sand martin, a closely relatedspecies that lacks a streamer. Our results show that the tailstreamer of the barn swallow has a role in maneuvering flight. However, the outer tail feather is approximately 12 mm (9-20%)longer than the aerodynamic optimum for maneuvering flight.Furthermore, we show that the addition of artificial tail streamersto the sand martin, enhances maneuverability even at smallstreamer lengths, thereby implying that tail streamers mayhave evolved via natural selection for increased flight performance.Our results therefore suggest that initial tail streamer elongationin the barn swallow has a functional explanation in terms of increased aerodynamic performance. However, female choice hasbecome associated with this trait, promoting the developmentof a costly handicap.  相似文献

Epstein-Barr virus infection has been epidemiologically associated with the development of multiple autoimmune diseases, particularly systemic lupus erythematosus and multiple sclerosis. Currently, there is no known mechanism that can account for these associations. The germinal-center (GC) model of EBV infection and persistence proposes that EBV gains access to the memory B cell compartment via GC reactions by driving infected cells to differentiate using the virus-encoded LMP1 and LMP2a proteins, which act as functional homologues of CD40 and the B cell receptor, respectively. The ability of LMP2a, when expressed in mice, to allow escape of autoreactive B cells suggests that it could perform a similar role in infected GC B cells, permitting the survival of potentially pathogenic autoreactive B cells. To test this hypothesis, we cloned and expressed antibodies from EBV+ and EBV memory B cells present during acute infection and profiled their self- and polyreactivity. We find that EBV does persist within self- and polyreactive B cells but find no evidence that it favors the survival of pathogenic autoreactive B cells. On the contrary, EBV+ memory B cells express lower levels of self-reactive and especially polyreactive antibodies than their uninfected counterparts do. Our work suggests that EBV has only a modest effect on the GC process, which allows it to access and persist within a subtly unique niche of the memory compartment characterized by relatively low levels of self- and polyreactivity. We suggest that this might reflect an active process where EBV and its human host have coevolved so as to minimize the virus''s potential to contribute to autoimmune disease.  相似文献
