The new field of primate archaeology investigates the technological behavior and material record of nonhuman primates, providing valuable comparative data on our understanding of human technological evolution. Yet, paralleling hominin archaeology, the field is largely biased toward the analysis of lithic artifacts. While valuable comparative data have been gained through an examination of extant nonhuman primate tool use and its archaeological record, focusing on this one single aspect provides limited insights. It is therefore necessary to explore to what extent other non-technological activities, such as non-tool aided feeding, traveling, social behaviors or ritual displays, leave traces that could be detected in the archaeological record. Here we propose four new areas of investigation which we believe have been largely overlooked by primate archaeology and that are crucial to uncovering the full archaeological potential of the primate behavioral repertoire, including that of our own: (1) Plant technology; (2) Archaeology beyond technology; (3) Landscape archaeology; and (4) Primate cultural heritage. We discuss each theme in the context of the latest developments and challenges, as well as propose future directions. Developing a more “inclusive” primate archaeology will not only benefit the study of primate evolution in its own right but will aid conservation efforts by increasing our understanding of changes in primate-environment interactions over time. 相似文献

This paper presents the first comparable overview of different recovery techniques used for waterlogged Neolithic sediments
in the surroundings of the Alps in the last decades. Such an investigation became necessary because it was not known which
parts of plants and types of remains were absent or completely underrepresented due to inappropriate recovery techniques in
Slovenian archaeobotany up to 2006. During the 2007 excavation of the approximately 5,200 years old Neolithic pile dwelling
site of Stare gmajne, Ljubljansko barje, Slovenia, we compared three methods for the investigation of botanical macroremains: method 1 (M1) included
rough wet-sieving and subsequent drying of the fractions; method 2 (M2) rough wet sieving and keeping the fractions wet; and
method 3 (M3) washing over and keeping the fractions wet. M3 with gentle washing, systematic subsampling, examination, and
sorting of macroremains while wet, as well as using 0.355 mm as the smallest sieve mesh size gave the best results. When using
the cruder M2 or M1 methods, waterlogged uncarbonized seeds of taxa such as Linum usitatissimum, Papaver somniferum and Brassica rapa, waterlogged chaff of Cerealia and pericarps of Maloideae and Quercus sp., which are all fragile, were underrepresented or even completely absent and therefore the plant spectra were strongly biased.
On the contrary, taxa with lignified seed/fruit walls like Cornus mas, Corylus avellana or Rubus sp. were overrepresented when using the M2 and particularly the M1 method. The application of the M3, instead of the M1 method
which has been traditionally used in Slovenian archaeobotany, helped us to identify uncarbonized remains of Linum usitatissimum and various species of Triticum for the first time in a waterlogged Neolithic site in Slovenia. Our study should contribute to a standardization of methods,
which is desperately needed in archaeobotany. The study clearly shows that the plant spectra can be strongly biased if inappropriate
handling techniques are used. The conclusions hold for all kinds of waterlogged sediments of different periods. 相似文献

The vacuolar/endosomal network has an important but as yet undefined role in the cellular tolerance to salt stress. We hypothesized that the mechanistic basis for the importance of vacuolar protein sorting (vps) components in salt tolerance is the targeting of the crucial sodium exporter Ena1p to the plasma membrane. The link between Ena1p and the vps components was established by the observation that overexpression of Ena1p could suppress the salt sensitivity of the ESCRT knockouts vps20Delta, snf7/vps32Delta and snf8/vps22Delta. To further investigate this functional interaction, fluorescence microscopy was utilized to monitor localization of GFP-tagged Ena1p. For all analyzed vps mutants, Ena1p seemed properly localized to the plasma membrane, even during saline growth. However, quantitative differences in plasma membrane localized Ena1p were recorded; e.g. the highly salt sensitive pep12Delta mutant exhibited substantially enhanced Ena1p levels. In addition, the kinetics of Ena1p localization to the plasma membrane was severely delayed in several vps mutants, and this delay correlated to the salt specific growth defect. This paper discusses potential mechanistic hypotheses, like Ena1p transporter activity or localization kinetics, or ESCRT component's influence on signaling, for linking endosomal sorting functions to cellular salt sensitivity. 相似文献

In diabetic retinopathy (DR) and other angiogenesis-associated diseases, increased levels of cytokines, inflammatory cells,
and angiogenic factors are present. We investigated the hypothesis that rs2243250 polymorphism of the interleukin 4 (IL-4) gene or rs1800896 polymorphism of the interleukin 10 (IL-10) gene, and rs3212227 polymorphism of the 3’ untranslated region (3’ UTR) of the interleukin-12 p40 gene (IL12B) may be associated with the development of proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) in Caucasians with type 2 diabetes (DM2).
This cross sectional case — control study included 189 patients with PDR and 187 patients with type 2 diabetes without PDR.
Polymorphisms rs1800896 of the IL-10 gene, rs2243250 of the IL-4 gene, and rs3212227 of IL12B gene were analyzed by ARMS -PCR and RFLP -PCR methods. Multivariate analysis demonstrated the GG genotype of the rs1800896
polymorphism of the IL-10 gene to be associated with increased risk for PDR (OR=1.99; 95% CI=1.11–3.57; P=0.02), whereas the TT genotype of the rs2243250
polymorphism of the IL-4 gene and the AA genotype of the rs3212227 polymorphism of the IL-12 gene were not independent risk factors for PDR. Our findings suggest that the genetic variations at the IL-10 promoter gene might be a genetic risk factor for PDR in Caucasians with type 2 diabetes. 相似文献

Purinergic signaling has considerable impact on the functioning of the nervous system, including the special senses. Purinergic receptors are expressed in various cell types in the retina, cochlea, taste buds, and the olfactory epithelium. The activation of these receptors by nucleotides, particularly adenosine-5′-triphosphate (ATP) and its breakdown products, has been shown to tune sensory information coding to control the homeostasis and to regulate the cell turnover in these organs. While the purinergic system of the retina, cochlea, and taste buds has been investigated in numerous studies, the available information about purinergic signaling in the olfactory system is rather limited. Using functional calcium imaging, we identified and characterized the purinergic receptors expressed in the vomeronasal organ of larval Xenopus laevis. ATP-evoked activity in supporting and basal cells was not dependent on extracellular Ca2+. Depletion of intracellular Ca2+ stores disrupted the responses in both cell types. In addition to ATP, supporting cells responded also to uridine-5′-triphosphate (UTP) and adenosine-5′-O-(3-thiotriphosphate) (ATPγS). The response profile of basal cells was considerably broader. In addition to ATP, they were activated by ADP, 2-MeSATP, 2-MeSADP, ATPγS, UTP, and UDP. Together, our findings suggest that supporting cells express P2Y2/P2Y4-like purinergic receptors and that basal cells express multiple P2Y receptors. In contrast, vomeronasal receptor neurons were not sensitive to nucleotides, suggesting that they do not express purinergic receptors. Our data provide the basis for further investigations of the physiological role of purinergic signaling in the vomeronasal organ and the olfactory system in general. 相似文献

Traditionally, probiotics are linked to the good health of the intestine and most clinical studies focus on that field. Evidence of oral probiotic use for ear and oral cavity disease prevention with impact on human health is limited. This work reviews existing studies and literature on Streptococcus salivarius K12 as an oral probiotic and effects of S. salivarius K12 on human ear and oral cavity human health. The studies were accessed via database searches: MEDLINE, PubMed, and Elsevier. The search included/focused on/encompassed publications from 2003 to 2016 with keywords related to K12 Streptococcus salivarius, bacteriocin-like inhibitory substances (BLIS) K12, probiotic K12 salivarius, and K12 probiotic health effects. Only a small amount of studies was identified: the total of 68 studies was identified, 35 of which were relevant after screening, and 9 were included in the final analysis. Very little literature is available about the association/correlation between/connection/interrelation of S. salivarius K12 with/and human ear and oral cavity health. S. salivarius K12 may have a role in reducing the occurrence and/or severity of secretory otitis media (SOM) and also in prevention of streptococcal and viral pharyngotonsillitis in children. Research highlights that S. salivarius K12 has shown promising results in treatment of halitosis, but data are still deficient. Further studies need to be initiated to improve understanding of the association of oral probiotic S. salivarius K12 with human ear and oral cavity health. 相似文献
