Maternal adrenalectomy at 7 or 14 days of gestation produced increased cell necrosis within zona reticularis cells on the day of birth and at 24 or 48 h after birth. Small remnants or large portions of adrenocortical cells were present within macrophages. In otherwise normal adrenocortical cells, lipid droplets were incorporated within some mitochondria. Autophagocytosis of single mitochondria was observed within adrenocortical cells. Summary A structural X chromosome abnormality was found in the karyotype of a tall patient with gonadal dysgenesis and with no extragenital anomalies. Based on her mother's karyotype, which showed a pericentric inversion of the X chromosome: 46,X,inv(X)(p22q24), as well as from G and R banding, we concluded that the abnormal X chromosome of our patient was a recombinant chromosome that had originated as a result of one crossing over in the inversion loop during gametogenesis in her mother. The recombinant X chromosome had a partial deletion of Xq and a partial duplication of Xp: 46,X,rec(X),dup p,inv(X)(p22q24). After BUDR incorporation, the abnormal X chromosome of the patient and that of her mother showed a late replication. The karyotype-phenotype correlation and the nonrandom inactivation of the inverted X chromosome in the mother are discussed. 相似文献

Summary Detection of a patient suffering from Krabbe's disease led to carrier screening in his family. Determination of galactosylceramide -galactosidase activity revealed the occurrence of two different alleles among the carriers of the same family. Heterozygotes and their noncarrier relatives were studied using psychometric and neuropsychological tests under blind conditions. It was found that compared to seven adult noncarrier relatives 19 adult carriers differ significantly in their general IQ and some subtests of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for adults (WISA), including spatial cognition. Reaction times were significantly slower in the carriers with enzyme activity below 25% of the control values. Stabursvik (1959) described the saponin fraction of Narthecium ossifragum as a sarsasapogenin glycoside with the structure arabinosegalactose-xylose-glucose-sarsasapogenin. In a renewed study of the phototoxic lamb disease alveld, in which this saponin has been implicated (Ender 1955), we have looked more closely at the saponin fraction. We find that there are two saponins, one major and one minor. Both have a branched trisaccharide on C-3 of the sapogenin. Galactose is directly attached to C-3 in both saponins. The major saponin has glucose and arabinose attached to galactose, the minor saponin has glucose and xylose. We suggest the names narthecin and xylosin for the spirostanol form of these two saponins. In fresh juice from leaves we find little narthecin, however. Most of the saponin is present in the furostanol form, with glucose on C-26. Enzymatic hydrolysis showed this glucose to be bound as a β-glucoside. From specific rotations in partial hydrolysates we conclude that the saccharide on C-3 is a β-D-glucoside, α-L-araboside, β-D-galactoside. 相似文献

Summary Most of the auditory neurons in the ventral nerve cord ofLocusta migratoria carry information not only from the tympanal organs but also from the subgenual organs (vibration sensors). Six of the eight neuron types studied electrophysiologically respond to at least these two modalities. Artificial sounds (white noise and pure tones varying in frequency and intensity) and sinusoidal vibration (200 Hz with an acceleration of 15.8 cm/s2 or 2000 Hz and 87 cm/s2) were used as stimuli.Complex excitatory and/or inhibitory interactions of the signals from both tympanal organs form the discharge patterns of auditory ventral-cord neurons in response to stimulation with air-borne sound. Normally the input of the ipsilateral sense organ dominates. The response patterns of these same neurons elicited by vibration stimuli are formed differently, as follows: (1) the sensory inputs of all subgenual organs are integrated in the responses of the ventral-cord neurons; in a single neuron they have either excitatory or inhibitory effects, but not both. (2) The more legs vibrated, the larger is the response. (3) The subgenual organs in the middle legs are most effective, those in the hind legs least so. (4) Ipsilateral vibration has more effect than contralateral.The six auditory neurons react to vibration combined with air-borne sound in different ways. The B neuron is the only one inhibited by vibration stimuli. Summary A comparsion of the Feulgen hydrolysis curves and the chromatin compactness of the liver cell nuclei of young and old rats was made. It was found that the rate of DNA depurination and chromatin compactness are higher in the liver cell nuclei of old rats, both in di-and tetraploidal cells. By using the choline starvation process it is possible to deplete the membranes of Neurospora crassa choline auxotroph of phosphatidylcholine, without affecting the viability of germinated spores or whole mycelium. Spin label probes were used to examine the possible dependence of the physical state of cellular lipids on the presence of phosphatidylcholine in the membranes.Increased freedom of rotational motion of lipid soluble probes was regularly detected in choline-starved mycelium. The accumulation of neutral lipids (mostly triglycerides) in bulk form was also observed during the choline starvation process. The experiments with isolated and separated lipid classes indicated that the observed increase in fluidity of lipids in choline-starved mycelium is partly due to the difference in physical properties between bulk lipids and membrane lipids. The influence of external sodium concentration on potassium (depolarizing agent)-stimulated calcium uptake and Ca+-dependent acetylcholine release by rat cerebral cortex synaptosomes has been studied.
